    Onsite Wastewater Treatment: Implementation of a region-wide Integrated Risk Framework

    Onsite wastewater treatment systems are becoming more widely accepted as long term wastewater treatment systems in areas not serviced by centralised sewerage systems. However, the current means of assessing site and soil conditions to provide adequate treatment and dispersal of domestic wastewater has been a major drawback in achieving specific performance outcomes. In Australia, it is the responsibility of local governments to assess and approve the use of onsite systems, and appreciable variations in standards and codes exist between different jurisdictions. The main aim of this research was to develop a scientific framework for assessing onsite systems, based on risk assessment and management principles thereby allowing more appropriate integration across local government boundaries. A case study illustrating the implementation of the risk framework is also presented

    ECONOMICALLY OPTIMAL WILDFIRE INTERVENTION REGIMES

    Wildfires in the United States result in total damages and costs that are likely to exceed billions of dollars annually. Land managers and policy makers propose higher rates of prescribed burning and other kinds of vegetation management to reduce amounts of wildfire and the risks of catastrophic losses. A wildfire public welfare maximization function, using a wildfire production function estimated using a time series model of a panel of Florida counties, is employed to simulate the publicly optimal level of prescribed burning in an example county in Florida (Volusia). Evaluation of the production function reveals that prescribed fire is not associated with reduced catastrophic wildfire risks in Volusia County Florida, indicating a short-run elasticity of -0.16 and a long-run elasticity of wildfire with respect to prescribed fire of -0.07. Stochastic dominance is used to evaluate the optimal amount of prescribed fire most likely to maximize a measure of public welfare. Results of that analysis reveal that the optimal amount of annual prescribed fire is about 3 percent (9,000 acres/year) of the total forest area, which is very close to the actual average amount of prescribed burning (12,700 acres/year) between 1994-99.Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

    Introgressive Hybridization and the Evolution of Lake-Adapted Catostomid Fishes.

    Hybridization has been identified as a significant factor in the evolution of plants as groups of interbreeding species retain their phenotypic integrity despite gene exchange among forms. Recent studies have identified similar interactions in animals; however, the role of hybridization in the evolution of animals has been contested. Here we examine patterns of gene flow among four species of catostomid fishes from the Klamath and Rogue rivers using molecular and morphological traits. Catostomus rimiculus from the Rogue and Klamath basins represent a monophyletic group for nuclear and morphological traits; however, the Klamath form shares mtDNA lineages with other Klamath Basin species (C. snyderi, Chasmistes brevirostris, Deltistes luxatus). Within other Klamath Basin taxa, D. luxatus was largely fixed for alternate nuclear alleles relative to C. rimiculus, while Ch. brevirostris and C. snyderi exhibited a mixture of these alleles. Deltistes luxatus was the only Klamath Basin species that exhibited consistent covariation of nuclear and mitochondrial traits and was the primary source of mismatched mtDNA in Ch. brevirostris and C. snyderi, suggesting asymmetrical introgression into the latter species. In Upper Klamath Lake, D. luxatus spawning was more likely to overlap spatially and temporally with C. snyderi and Ch. brevirostris than either of those two with each other. The latter two species could not be distinguished with any molecular markers but were morphologically diagnosable in Upper Klamath Lake, where they were largely spatially and temporally segregated during spawning. We examine parallel evolution and syngameon hypotheses and conclude that observed patterns are most easily explained by introgressive hybridization among Klamath Basin catostomids

    The elimination of surface cross-hatch from relaxed, limited-area Si1 – xGex buffer layers

    The influence of lateral dimensions on the relaxation and surface topography of linearly graded Si1 – xGex buffer layers has been investigated. A dramatic change in the relaxation mechanism has been observed for depositions on Si mesa pillars of lateral dimensions 10 µm and below. Misfit dislocations are able to extend unhindered and terminate at the edges of the growth zone, yielding a surface free of cross-hatch. For lateral dimensions in excess of 10 µm orthogonal misfit interactions occur and relaxation is dominated by the modified Frank–Read (MFR) mechanism. The stress fields associated with the MFR dislocation pile-ups result in a pronounced cross-hatch topography

    The effects of pelleted cannabidiol supplementation on heart rate and reaction scores in horses

    The potential use of cannabidiol (CBD) as a nutraceutical to support improved health and welfare has been of increasing interest. In particular, CBD has been shown to decrease anxiety in humans and small animals. While there is little research published on the effects of CBD supplementation in horses, its use is increasing rapidly. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of feeding a pelleted CBD supplement on equine reactivity and heart rate (HR). Seventeen stock-type geldings were divided into control (CON) or treatment (TRT) groups. The TRT group received 100 mg of CBD once daily. Control horses were maintained on their standard diet without supplementation. A novel object test was used to evaluate changes in HR and reactivity before and after 6 weeks of supplementation. Heart rate was recorded before, at, and after exposure to the novel object. Reactivity when the horse was exposed to the novel object was scored live and through video review. There was no difference in starting, stimulus, or final HR, but TRT horses exhibited less reactivity after 6 weeks of supplementation. Results suggest that CBD supplementation may lower reactivity in horses

    Duration of Star Formation in Galactic Giant Molecular Clouds. I. The Great Nebula in Carina

    We present a novel infrared spectral energy distribution (SED) modeling methodology that uses likelihood-based weighting of the model fitting results to construct probabilistic Hertzsprung–Russell diagrams (pHRD) for X-ray-identified, intermediate-mass (2–8 M⊙), pre-main-sequence young stellar populations. This methodology is designed specifically for application to young stellar populations suffering strong, differential extinction (ΔA_V > 10 mag), typical of Galactic massive star-forming regions. We pilot this technique in the Carina Nebula Complex (CNC) by modeling the 1–8 μm SEDs of 2269 likely stellar members that exhibit no excess emission from circumstellar dust disks at 4.5 μm or shorter wavelengths. A subset of ~100 intermediate-mass stars in the lightly obscured Trumpler 14 and 16 clusters have available spectroscopic T_(eff), measured from the Gaia-ESO survey. We correctly identify the stellar temperature in 85% of cases, and the aggregate pHRD for all sources returns the same peak in the stellar age distribution as obtained using the spectroscopic T_(eff). The SED model parameter distributions of stellar mass and evolutionary age reveal significant variation in the duration of star formation among four large-scale stellar overdensities within the CNC and a large distributed stellar population. Star formation began ~10 Myr ago and continues to the present day, with the star formation rate peaking ≾3 Myr ago when the massive Trumpler 14 and 16 clusters formed. We make public the set of 100,000 SED models generated from standard pre-main-sequence evolutionary tracks and our custom software package for generating pHRDs and mass–age distributions from the SED fitting results

    Assessing Latrine Use in Rural India: A Cross-Sectional Study Comparing Reported Use and Passive Latrine Use Monitors.

    Although large-scale programs, like India's Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC), have improved latrine coverage in rural settings, evidence suggests that actual use is suboptimal. However, the reliability of methods to assess latrine use is uncertain. We assessed the reliability of reported use, the standard method, by comparing survey-based responses against passive latrine use monitors (PLUMs) through a cross-sectional study among 292 households in 25 villages in rural Odisha, India, which recently received individual household latrines under the TSC. PLUMs were installed for 2 weeks and householders responded to surveys about their latrine use behavior. Reported use was compared with PLUM results using Bland-Altman (BA) plots and concordance statistics. Reported use was higher than corresponding PLUM-recorded events across the range of comparisons. The mean reported "usual" daily events per household (7.09, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 6.51, 7.68) was nearly twice that of the PLUM-recorded daily average (3.62, 95% CI = 3.29, 3.94). There was poor agreement between "usual" daily latrine use and the average daily PLUM-recorded events (ρc = 0.331, 95% CI = 0.242, 0.427). Moderate agreement (ρc = 0.598, 95% CI = 0.497, 0.683) was obtained when comparing daily reported use during the previous 48 hours with the average daily PLUM count. Reported latrine use, though already suggesting suboptimal adoption, likely exaggerates the actual level of uptake of latrines constructed under the program. Where reliance on self-reports is used, survey questions should focus on the 48 hours prior to the date of the survey rather than asking about "usual" latrine use behavior

    Comparative morphology of male genital skeletomusculature in the Leptanillinae (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), with a standardized muscular terminology for the male genitalia of Hymenoptera

    The male genitalia of the Insecta are famed for structural and functional diversity. Variation in this anatomical region shows ample phylogenetic signal, and this variation has proven indispensable for classification across the insects at multiple taxonomic ranks. However, in the ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) the male genital phenotype is ancillary to the morphology of the worker caste for systematic purposes. Ants of the enigmatic subfamily Leptanillinae are an exception, as males are easier to collect than workers. Ongoing systematic revision of the Leptanillinae must therefore rely upon the male phenotype – particularly the spectacular morphological profusion of the male genitalia. To thoroughly illuminate this anatomical region and aid comparative morphological research on ant male genitalia, we present a comparative morphological study of the male genitalia in nine exemplar lineages spanning the Leptanillinae, plus three outgroups representing other major clades of the Formicidae. We use micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) to generate 3D volumetric reconstructions of male genital skeletomusculature in these specimens. Our descriptions use new muscular terminology compatible with topographic main-group systems for the rest of the pterygote soma, and applicable to all Hymenoptera. We find that male genitalia in the Leptanillinae show an overall trend towards skeletomuscular simplification, with muscular reduction in some cases being unprecedented in ants, or even hymenopterans in general. In several lineages of the Leptanillinae we describe derivations of the male genitalia that are bizarre and unparalleled among the Hymenoptera.
