Reduction of the nosocomial meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus incidence density by a region-wide search and follow-strategy in forty German hospitals of the EUREGIO, 2009 to 2011
Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) disseminates between hospitals serving one patient catchment area. Successful prevention and control requires concerted efforts and regional surveillance. Forty hospitals located in the German EUREGIO have established a network for combating MRSA. In 2007 they agreed upon a synchronised strategy for screening of risk patients and a standard for transmissionbased precautions (search and follow). The same year, the hospitals started synchronised MRSA prevention and annually reporting MRSA-data to the public health authorities. The median rate of screening cultures per 100 patients admitted increased from 4.38 in 2007 to 34.4 in 2011 (p<0.0001). Between 2007 and 2011, the overall incidence density of MRSA (0.87 MRSA cases/1,000 patient days vs 1.54; p<0.0001) increased significantly. In contrast, both the incidence density of nosocomial MRSA cases (0.13 nosocomial MRSA cases/1,000 patient days in 2009 vs 0.08 in 2011; p=0.0084) and the MRSA-days-associated nosocomial MRSA rate (5.51 nosocomial MRSA cases/1,000 MRSA days in 2009 vs 3.80 in 2011; p=0.0437) decreased significantly after the second year of the project. We documented adherence to the regional screening strategy resulting in improved detection of MRSA carriers at admission. Subsequently, after two years the nosocomial MRSA-incidence density was reduced. Regional surveillance data, annually provided as benchmarking to the regional hospitals and public health authorities, indicated successful prevention.</p

Improving Male Partner Involvement in HIV-Positive Women's Care Through Behavioral Change Interventions in Malawi (WeMen Study): A Prospective, Controlled Before-and-After Study
Several strategies and interventions have been implemented to improve male partner involvement (MI) in Sub-Saharan Africa, but evidence on successful interventions is scarce. This controlled before-and-after intervention study aims to evaluate the impact of three interventions on male partners' involvement in HIV+ women's care in Malawi. We piloted these three interventions: the organization of a special day for men, the deployment of male champions in communities to increase awareness on MI, and the delivery of an incentive (food package) for couples attending the facility. We observed a significant increase in the number of women accompanied by their partners (from 48.5 to 81.4%) and the number of women feeling safe at home (from 63.5 to 95.2%) after the special day intervention. This outcome increased after the deployment of male champions in communities (from 44.0 to 75.0%). No significant improvement was observed in the site where we delivered the incentive to couples. Our findings showed that the special day for men and the use of male champions might effectively increase the male involvement in the health of their female partners
Magnetic versus crystal field linear dichroism in NiO thin films
We have detected strong dichroism in the Ni x-ray absorption
spectra of monolayer NiO films. The dichroic signal appears to be very similar
to the magnetic linear dichroism observed for thicker antiferromagnetic NiO
films. A detailed experimental and theoretical analysis reveals, however, that
the dichroism is caused by crystal field effects in the monolayer films, which
is a non trivial effect because the high spin Ni ground state is not
split by low symmetry crystal fields. We present a practical experimental
method for identifying the independent magnetic and crystal field contributions
to the linear dichroic signal in spectra of NiO films with arbitrary
thicknesses and lattice strains. Our findings are also directly relevant for
high spin and systems such as LaFeO, FeO,
VO, LaCrO, CrO, and Mn manganate thin films
Observation of magnetic circular dichroism in Fe L_{2,3} x-ray-fluorescence spectra
We report experiments demonstrating circular dichroism in the x-ray-fluorescence spectra of magnetic systems, as predicted by a recent theory. The data, on the L_{2,3} edges of ferromagnetic iron, are compared with fully relativistic local spin density functional calculations, and the relationship between the dichroic spectra and the spin-resolved local density of occupied states is discussed
Large Orbital Magnetic Moment and Coulomb Correlation effects in FeBr2
We have performed an all-electron fully relativistic density functional
calculation to study the magnetic properties of FeBr2. We show for the first
time that the correlation effect enhances the contribution from orbital degrees
of freedom of electrons to the total magnetic moment on Fe as
opposed to common notion of nearly total quenching of the orbital moment on
Fe site. The insulating nature of the system is correctly predicted when
the Hubbard parameter U is included. Energy bands around the gap are very
narrow in width and originate from the localized Fe-3 orbitals, which

A role for the RabA4b effector protein PI-4Kβ1 in polarized expansion of root hair cells in Arabidopsis thaliana
The RabA4b GTPase labels a novel, trans-Golgi network compartment displaying a developmentally regulated polar distribution in growing Arabidopsis thaliana root hair cells. GTP bound RabA4b selectively recruits the plant phosphatidylinositol 4-OH kinase, PI-4Kβ1, but not members of other PI-4K families. PI-4Kβ1 colocalizes with RabA4b on tip-localized membranes in growing root hairs, and mutant plants in which both the PI-4Kβ1 and -4Kβ2 genes are disrupted display aberrant root hair morphologies. PI-4Kβ1 interacts with RabA4b through a novel homology domain, specific to eukaryotic type IIIβ PI-4Ks, and PI-4Kβ1 also interacts with a Ca2+ sensor, AtCBL1, through its NH2 terminus. We propose that RabA4b recruitment of PI-4Kβ1 results in Ca2+-dependent generation of PI-4P on this compartment, providing a link between Ca2+ and PI-4,5P2–dependent signals during the polarized secretion of cell wall components in tip-growing root hair cells
Band-theoretical prediction of magnetic anisotropy in uranium monochalcogenides
Magnetic anisotropy of uranium monochalcogenides, US, USe and UTe, is studied
by means of fully-relativistic spin-polarized band structure calculations
within the local spin-density approximation. It is found that the size of the
magnetic anisotropy is fairly large (about 10 meV/unit formula), which is
comparable with experiment. This strong anisotropy is discussed in view of a
pseudo-gap formation, of which crucial ingredients are the exchange splitting
of U 5f states and their hybridization with chalcogen p states (f-p
hybridization). An anomalous trend in the anisotropy is found in the series
(US>>USe<UTe) and interpreted in terms of competition between localization of
the U 5f states and the f-p hybridization. It is the spin-orbit interaction on
the chalcogen p states that plays an essential role in enlarging the strength
of the f-p hybridization in UTe, leading to an anomalous systematic trend in
the magnetic anisotropy.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
