Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES I-M) METSAT project

    Get PDF
The primary objective of the METSAT project is to provide a satellite system that meets the National Environmental Satellite Data and Information Service (NESDIS) requirements as specified by NOAA. For the GOES I-M spacecraft, these requirements include an imager and sounder system, a data collection system, and a search and rescue system. The Space Transportation System and GOES I-M development philosophy and the satellite transfer orbit philosophy are explained. The spacecraft will be launched from the Kennedy Space Center using Atlas G/Centaur D-1A expendable launch vehicles. The coverage required for launch and the support of transfer and drift orbits will consist of the 26-m antenna as prime and the TBD antenna as backup for 11 days at all complexes. There will be contingency support 15 days for on-station spacecraft checkout. After the initial 30 to 45 days, the Deep Space Network (DSN) is committed for emergency support. Contingency and emergency support will be provided by Goldstone only. Information is given in tabular form for DSN support, frequency assignments, telemetry, command, and tracking support responsibility

Phraseologische Strukturen in Hermann Kinders autobiografischer KrankheitserzĂ€hlung „Der Weg allen Fleisches“ (2014)

Hermann Kinder’s novel contains a conspicuous number of phraseological elements, which is unusual for the writing style of this author. The article describes the accumulation of phraseological and idiomatic material and its usage as a literary stylistic resource. The analysis focuses on the relation of the linguistic appearance and the aesthetic function of the phraseologisms. Therefore, the article intends to contribute to an interdisciplinary method of interpretation, linking linguistic and literary studies. It also includes psychoanalytic concepts to describe the author’s specific linguistic expression of his autobiographical experience of illness. The aesthetic function of the phraseologisms and idiomatic phrases changes in relation to the novel’s progress. In the beginning, collocations increase the cohesion of the text in order to create an image of health. When the disease becomes more and more evident, the emotional affection of the protagonist is being controlled by formulistic linguistic elements. In addition, the author unmasks the pragmatic automatism of the medical language and the failure of its empathetic function by ironically evoking the ambiguity of idiomatic phrases. As a contrast, the narrator refers back to a comforting symbolic language by using linguistic patterns of fairy tales as an imitation of phraseological components. As a result, the analysis indicates that the inclusion of phraseological material in this literary pathobiography seems to provide a linguistic space of shelter for the suffering protagonist. The context-related, varying usage of phraseologisms in this text also seems to linguistically reflect a collective, culturally overarching psychosomatic experience of illness

Local Differential Geometry as a Representation of the SUSY Oscillator

    Get PDF
This work proposes a natural extension of the Bargmann-Fock representation to a SUSY system. The main objective is to show that all essential structures of the n-dimensional SUSY oscillator are supplied by basic differential geometrical notions on an analytical R^n, except for the scalar product which is the only additional ingredient. The restriction to real numbers implies only a minor loss of structure but makes the essential features clearer. In particular, euclidean evolution is enforced naturally by identification with the 1-parametric group of dilations.Comment: 10 pages, late

The Cryogenic Test Bed experiments: Cryogenic heat pipe flight experiment CRYOHP (STS-53). Cryogenic two phase flight experiment CRYOTP (STS-62). Cryogenic flexible diode flight experiment CRYOFD

This paper presents an overview of the Cryogenic Test Bed (CTB) experiments including experiment results, integration techniques used, and lessons learned during integration, test and flight phases of the Cryogenic Heat Pipe Flight Experiment (STS-53) and the Cryogenic Two Phase Flight Experiment (OAST-2, STS-62). We will also discuss the Cryogenic Flexible Diode Heat Pipe (CRYOFD) experiment which will fly in the 1996/97 time frame and the fourth flight of the CTB which will fly in the 1997/98 time frame. The two missions tested two oxygen axially grooved heat pipes, a nitrogen fibrous wick heat pipe and a 2-methylpentane phase change material thermal storage unit. Techniques were found for solving problems with vibration from the cryo-collers transmitted through the compressors and the cold heads, and mounting the heat pipe without introducing parasitic heat leaks. A thermally conductive interface material was selected that would meet the requirements and perform over the temperature range of 55 to 300 K. Problems are discussed with the bi-metallic thermostats used for heater circuit protection and the S-Glass suspension straps originally used to secure the BETSU PCM in the CRYOTP mission. Flight results will be compared to 1-g test results and differences will be discussed

Generalised boundary conditions for the Aharonov-Bohm effect combined with a homogeneous magnetic field

The most general admissible boundary conditions are derived for an idealised Aharonov-Bohm flux intersecting the plane at the origin on the background of a homogeneous magnetic field. A standard technique based on self-adjoint extensions yields a four-parameter family of boundary conditions; other two parameters of the model are the Aharonov-Bohm flux and the homogeneous magnetic field. The generalised boundary conditions may be regarded as a combination of the Aharonov-Bohm effect with a point interaction. Spectral properties of the derived Hamiltonians are studied in detail.Comment: 32 pages, a LaTeX source file with 2 eps figures; submitted to J. Math. Phy

Influence of impact velocity on the fragment formation of concrete specimens

    Get PDF
In recent years some studies presented fragmentation models to describe the impact of projectiles [e. g.: 1, 2]. This paper shows results of high velocity impact of gun projectiles on concrete specimens. Three different muzzle velocities were tested on a standard concrete with special attention on the surface area generated. The penetration of the projectiles resulted in two craters (one on the front and one on the rear side of the specimens) and the formation of a huge number of particles of various shapes and sizes. The crater surfaces were analyzed with the 3-dimensional laser-scanner DAVID 3D which utilizes triangulation. The detailed principle is described in [3]. Parameters to describe the particles were determined with a CPA (camera particle analyzer). The used Haver CPA 2-1 is based on digital image processing with a high-resolution digital line scan camera. The following information were obtained: the shape-parameter sphericity, the particle-size-parameters (Feret-diameter, length, volume distribution) and the numbers of particles. A triaxial ellipsoid model was developed to determine the surface of the particles which takes a particle-shape-parameter into account. The main advantage of the ellipsoid model compared to the normally used sphere model is the consideration of the volume determined. The ellipsoid model provides a better picture of the real particle surfaces. Besides these sample related parameters the speed of the projectile was measured before and after penetrating the concrete specimens. As a result both kinetic energies could be calculated. Their difference corresponds to sum of the energy necessary to generate the fracture particles and their kinetic energy following the impact. In the course of this study a correlation was established between the energy difference (fracture energy + kinetic energy) and the fracture surface area generated. An increasing energy difference led to an increasing fracture surface area and higher number of particles as well. These results of the study can be utilized for designing protective concrete structures
