    MEMOTS : a memetic algorithm integrating tabu search for combinatorial multiobjective optimization

    We present in this paper a new multiobjective memetic algorithm scheme called MEMOX. In current multiobjective memetic algorithms, the parents used for recombination are randomly selected. We improve this approach by using a dynamic hypergrid which allows to select a parent located in a region of minimal density. The second parent selected is a solution close, in the objective space, to the first parent. A local search is then applied to the offspring. We experiment this scheme with a new multiobjective tabu search called PRTS, which leads to the memetic algorithm MEMOTS. We show on the multidimensional multiobjective knapsack problem that if the number of objectives increase, it is preferable to have a diversified research rather using an advanced local search. We compare the memetic algorithm MEMOTS to other multiobjective memetic algorithms by using different quality indicators and show that the performances of the method are very interesting

    Construction and justification of Paris-like fatigue laws from Dugdale-type cohesive models

    International audienceWe propose a construction of fatigue laws from cohesive forces models in the case of a crack submitted to a mode I cyclic loading. Taking the cumulated opening as the memory variable and the surface energy density associated with Dugdale's model, we explicitly construct the fatigue law which gives the crack growth rate by cycle d'/dN in terms of the stress intensity factor KI. In particular, we recover a Paris law with an exponent 4, i.e., d'/dN = CKI 4, when KI is small, the coefficient C being explicitly expressed in terms of the material parameters. Furthermore, the law can be applied in the full range of values of KI and can be extended to non simple cycles

    Diversity of decay resistance strategies of durable tropical woods species: Bocoa prouacencsis Aublet, Vouacapoua americana Aublet, Inga alba (Sw.) Wild

    International audienceThe study of decay resistance in wood is of interest for wood end-users but also for the global carbon balance since wood biodegradation is a key driver of forest ecosystem functioning through its impacts on carbon and nutrient cycling. We studied the density and wood extractive contents in order to understand decay resistance against soil microflora after 90 days exposure of sapwood and heartwood from three Neotropical wood species known for their decay resistance: Bocoa prouacensis, Vouacapoua americana, Inga alba. Decay resistance was correlated with density more than wood extractive content. The results highlighted different decay resistance strategies. In B. prouacensis, both sapwood and heartwood were highly resistant due to the high density and high content of antifungal wood extractives. In V. americana heartwood, decay resistance was due to the high synergistic-acting wood extractive content. Conversely, with the least dense wood species I. alba, we found that decay resistance was due to the antifungal wood extractives synthesized early in the sapwood. In conclusion, we showed that the three wood species with the same level of heartwood decay resistance performance had different decay resistance strategies according to the anatomic and defensive wood traits

    Feasibility of glued laminated timber beams with tropical hardwoods

    International audienceA feasibility study of glulam was carried out in French Guiana using local wood species. The aim was to determine gluing parameters affording satisfactory behaviour to manufactured glulam in a tropical climate. Three abundant wood species, with special properties, were selected for the study and Resorcinol-Phenol-Formaldehyde resin was used for bonding. Three industrial parameters were considered: adhesive spread rate, closed assembly time and gluing pressure. Delamination and shearing tests were carried outin accordance with European Standards. The tests revealed the influence of wood properties and manufacturing parameters on joint resistance. In fact, the results showed that specific gravity and the shrinkage coefficientgreatly influenced the gluing step. Indeed, wood with a medium specific gravity needed more adhesive and more pressure than wood with a high specific gravity. In addition, planning and lamella thicknesswere found to affect glue joint resistance
