Role of online presentation archiving facilities as otolaryngology knowledge base

    Get PDF
Presentation is a powerful teaching tool. Every teacher would love to support his lecture with presentation aids. Eventhough these presentations are created using standalone tools likepresentation software, these presentations need to be archived for future retrieval. Till a few years ago faculty used to carry their presentations in the form of slides, which used to be cumbersome.Presentations using photographic slides were rigid offering no flexibility to the speaker. Now with the increasing use of computers and laptops digital presentations are becoming the order of the day.Today's teachers are expected to be comfortable with presentation software and their use. This study was performed to assess the awareness of faculty about online presentation archiving facilities. Questionnaires were used to elicit responses from faculty. This study revealed that only10% of the faculty questioned knew about the online storage facilities and only 2% of them are regularly archiving their presentation. This study concludes that more needs to be done in creating awareness among faculty regarding online presentation storage facilites available.

    Endoscopic stapedectomy our experience

    Get PDF
Stapedecomy traditionally is performed using operating microscope. Eventhough it is a time tested procedure, it had its own draw backs. In patients with excessive bony overhang it would bedifficult to access the middle ear cavity using operating microscope. Using Endoscope authors were able to circumvent these difficulties. Endoscopic examination of middle ear cavity was invogue since 1992. 10 Advantages of using endoscope include: Excellent exposure, visualization of entire middle ear cavity with ease, excellent crystal clear images. All the steps of stapedectomycould easily be performed using endoscope. Only flip side being the use of only one hand for the entire procedure as the non dominant hand will be holding the endoscope.

    Fracture Nasal Bones

Nose is the most prominent part of the face, hence it is likely to be the most common structure to be injured in the face.  Although fractures involving the nasal bones are very common, it is often ignored by the patient.  Patients with fractures of nasal bone will have deformity, tenderness, haemorrhage, edema, ecchymosis, instability, and crepitation.  These features may be present in varying combinations.  This article discusses the pathophysiology of these fractures, role of radiography and ultrasound in their diagnosis and their management.

Secondary Tuberculosis of Tonsil case report and literature review

    Get PDF
A case report of secondary tuberculosis of tonsil is being discussed along with review of published literature. This report attempts to draw attention to the fact that Tuberculosis is resurgentdespite excellent chemotherapeutic drugs available. This could be probably due to wide spread drug resistance, Immune deficiency states like Diabetes and HIV. Diagnosis of this condition needsa high index of suspicion. Biopsy should be performed in all these patients to rule out coexistant malignancy. Even though oral cavity is highly resistant to tuberculous infection due to the inherentbactericidal effect of saliva still cases of tuberculosis tonsil continue to be reported in developing countries like India.

    Thyroglossal cyst our experience

    Get PDF
This study shares our experiences in managing patients with thyroglossal cysts. These are common midline tumors of neck. Characteristically these masses move on protrusion of tongue due to their intimate relationship with hyoid bone. Adults commonly presented with this lesion eventhough literature review suggests it to be common in children. All these patients underwent surgerybecause of the presence of mass rather than any symptoms. All 30 patients taken up in this study had a normal functioning thyroid in the normal position in addition to the cystic lesion.

Comparative molecular docking analysis of essential oil constituents as elastase inhibitors

    Get PDF
Elastase is a protease or proteolytic enzyme, responsible for the breakdown of protein. There are eight human genes encoding for elastase, of which Elastase-1 (CELA-1) and Elastase-2 (ELANE) has significant implications on human diseases. Elastase-1 is primarily expressed in skin keratinocytes and is regarded as the major cause for the blistering in bullous pemphigoid, which affects the skin. On the other hand, Elastase-2 (ELANE), is expressed in the azurophil granules of neutrophils, is responsible for pulmonary emphysema and cyclic hematopoiesis a rare genetic disorder. Elastase is also produced by bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and forms the virulent factor in human. The ingredients from essential natural oils were found to have wound healing effects on non-healing wounds that is interfered by elastase due to microbial infection. Essential oils such as citral, citronellal, geranial, geraniol, and thymol were screened for their inhibitory activity on elastase produced by neutrophil, skin, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa by docking and were analyzed for their subcutaneous ADMET properties by ADME – TOX – Web server

Mucor Mycosis maxilla with palatal destruction An Interesting Case Report with Literature Review

    No full text
Mucor mycosis of maxilla is caused by filamentous fungi belonging to mucoracea family. This fungus is ubiquitous and can be found throughout the world on bread, air, soil etc. Rhinocerebralform of mucor mycosis is rather common. In this case report a detailed description of a patient with mucor mycosis involving maxilla with associated palatal destruction is given, along with a review of published literature on this topic. Rhinocerebral mucor mycosis is common in diabetics and immuno compromised individuals. The sheer inefficiency of phagocytic mechanism in diabetics help these organism to invade and proliferate. This condition is rather sinister because of the ability of mucor to invade other areas via peri vascular spread.
