Nonequilibrium fluctuations of an interface under shear
The steady state properties of an interface in a stationary Couette flow are
addressed within the framework of fluctuating hydrodynamics. Our study reveals
that thermal fluctuations are driven out of equilibrium by an effective shear
rate that differs from the applied one. In agreement with experiments, we find
that the mean square displacement of the interface is strongly reduced by the
flow. We also show that nonequilibrium fluctuations present a certain degree of
universality in the sense that all features of the fluids can be factorized
into a single control parameter. Finally, the results are discussed in the
light of recent experimental and numerical studies.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure
Hydrodynamic pairing of soft particles in a confined flow
The mechanism of hydrodynamics-induced pairing of soft particles, namely
closed bilayer membranes (vesicles, a model system for red blood cells) and
drops, is studied numerically with a special attention paid to the role of the
confinement (the particles are within two rigid walls). This study unveils the
complexity of the pairing mechanism due to hydrodynamic interactions. We find
both for vesicles and for drops that two particles attract each other and form
a stable pair at weak confinement if their initial separation is below a
certain value. If the initial separation is beyond that distance, the particles
repel each other and adopt a longer stable interdistance. This means that for
the same confinement we have (at least) two stable branches. To which branch a
pair of particles relaxes with time depends only on the initial configuration.
An unstable branch is found between these two stable branches. At a critical
confinement the stable branch corresponding to the shortest interdistance
merges with the unstable branch in the form of a saddle-node bifurcation. At
this critical confinement we have a finite jump from a solution corresponding
to the continuation of the unbounded case to a solution which is induced by the
presence of walls. The results are summarized in a phase diagram, which proves
to be of a complex nature. The fact that both vesicles and drops have the same
qualitative phase diagram points to the existence of a universal behavior,
highlighting the fact that with regard to pairing the details of mechanical
properties of the deformable particles are unimportant. This offers an
interesting perspective for simple analytical modeling
Nonlinear Brownian dynamics of interfacial fluctuations in a shear flow
International audienceUsing Brownian dynamics simulations, we investigate the effect of an external flow on the fluctuations of a liquid–liquid interface for a wide range of shear rates. Although the statistics is Gaussian at low shear, we observe a transition to a nonlinear phenomenology above a critical shear rate. In particular, we show that statistical properties at high forcing share striking similarities with Burgers turbulence. An energy criterion allows us to predict the onset of non-Gaussian statistics. It also provides a simple explanation for the development of shock singularities through the exchange of kinetic energy from regions with positive to negative gradients in the shear direction
Influence of anthropometric parameters and biochemical markers of bone metabolism on quantitative ultrasound of bone in the institutionalized elderly
The assessment of bone quality by quantitative ultrasound (QUS), a transportable and relatively cheap method, shows some correlations with bone mineral density (BMD) as measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and with fracture risk. To examine its correlation with bone metabolism in a population of institutionalized elderly people known to be at high risk for vitamin D deficiency and secondary hyperparathyroidism, QUS of the calcaneus and biochemical parameters were measured in 264 women aged 85±7 (SD) years and in 103 men aged 81±8 years living in 19 nursing homes. Vitamin D deficiency was frequent in this population: 41.9% of the women and 31.4% of the men had a serum 25-hydroxyvitamin (25OHD) level below the 2.5th percentile level of 3276 normal Swiss adults (6.2 µg/l or 15.5 mmol/l). Hyperparathyroidism was less frequent: serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels were above the 97.5th percentile level of normal adults (70 pg/l) in 18.9% of women and 9.8% of men. In women, QUS data correlated significantly with age (r=−0.297), body mass index (BMI) (r=0.403), calcium (r=0.220), PTH (r=−0.296), 25OHD (r=0.298) and alkaline phosphatase (AP) (r=−0.170) for broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA), and with age (r=−0.195), BMI (r=0.208), PTH (r=−0.174), 25OHD (r=0.140) and AP (r=−0.130) for speed of sound (SOS). In men, ultrasound data correlated with BMI (r=0.326), calcium (r=0.199), 25OHD (r=0.258) and AP (r=−0.311) for BUA, and with AP (r=−0.196) for SOS. In women, but not in men because of their smaller number, a multivariate analysis was performed to examine relationships between age, BMI, biochemical markers and QUS. Age, BMI, PTH and phosphate explained 30% of the variance of BUA and 10% for SOS. In conclusion, QUS of bone evaluates characteristics of bone that are influenced, at least partially, by age, BMI and the secondary hyperparathyroidism due to vitamin D deficienc
Resistance to LTB of steel bridge girders
Lateral torsional buckling (LTB), a complex phenomenon of instability, occurs when a beam is solicited by a bending force. In the area of steel and composite bridges girders which are characterised by slender plate girders, few experimental and theoretical studies exist in order to evaluate their structural security particularly with respect to LTB. Therefore, bridge girder resistance models refer to those existing for beams destined for buildings, by applying nevertheless a high level of conservatism. Steel bridge girders are three-dimensional structures, the behaviour of which is influenced by a number of parameters such as: cross bracing, variable geometry of cross sections, loading effects or even aspects related to manufacturing and to material. In fact, the manufacturing procedure of plate girders consists of flame cutting and then welding thin web to thick steel sheets. This results in geometric imperfections on the elements as well as in residual stresses inside the material, the effect of which on the behaviour of the structure is not to be neglected. This paper presents the actual results of experimental and theoretical studies carried out on the subject of LTB of steel bridge girders
