A Europa como comerciante e advogado do mundo: o continente e os processos globais

A posição da Europa é analisada especificando-se a globalização em cinco processos globais, nos quais o continente aparece como o centro dos fluxos de comércio e capital, como a região dos mais profundos entrelaçamentos transnacionais e como uma área de normatividade transnacional. Destacamse os antecedentes históricos e a inter-relação entre comércio internacional e direito que transpõe as comunidades políticas na Europa, tanto na teoria social moderna quanto na construção de instituições após a Segunda Guerra Mundial, bem como a difusão do direito europeu para outros continentes. Os conceitos de posição, papel e identidade devem ser distinguidos. Transformative sensemaking: Development in Whose Image? Keyan Tomaselli and the semiotics of visual representation

The defining and distinguishing feature of homo sapiens is its ability to make sense of the world, i.e. to use its intellect to understand and change both itself and the world of which it is an integral part. It is against this backdrop that this essay reviews Tomaselli's 1996 text, Appropriating Images: The Semiotics of Visual Representation/ by summarizing his key perspectives, clarifying his major operational concepts and citing particular portions from his work in support of specific perspectives on sense-making. Subsequently, this essay employs his techniques of sense-making to interrogate the notion of "development". This exercise examines and confirms two interrelated hypotheses: first, a semiotic analysis of the privileged notion of "development" demonstrates its metaphysical/ ideological, and thus limiting, nature especially vis-a-vis the marginalized, excluded, and the collective other, the so-called Developing Countries. Second, the interrogative nature of semiotics allows for an alternative reading and application of human potential or skills in the quest of a more humane social and global order, highlighting thereby the transformative implications of a reflexive epistemology.Web of Scienc

Transnational Motherhood and the Production of Subjectivity: Experiences of migrant Brazilian women living in London

This study explores how transnational motherhood is experienced by a group of Brazilian women participating in the global care chain. Our analysis indicates that transnational motherhood is an experience ripe with contradictions and emotional constraints. On one hand, transnational motherhood can subjugate women for not conforming to conventional motherhood norms. On the other hand, the migratory experience allows women to (re)negotiate their maternal roles, producing new meanings for care and mothering practices

At two hours in length, Immanuel Wallersteins Presidential Address to the XIVth World Congress of Sociology in Montreal on July 26, 1998, was almost as that of a Secretary Generals Report. Although long, it nonetheless managed to spellbind a most undisciplined audience of innumerable factions through the speechs unique combination of audacity, erudition and circumspection. The theme and title were The Heritage of Sociology, The Promise of Social Science. The address was the outgoing Presidents conclusion to a worldwide congressional discussion he had initiated; however, neither the heritage of sociology nor the promise of social science is a ?nite inquiry. My contribution here is thus meant to continue that debate
