Trio-One: Layering Uncertainty and Lineage on a Conventional DBMS
Trio is a new kind of database system that supports data, uncertainty, and lineage in a fully integrated manner. The first Trio prototype, dubbed Trio-One, is built on top of a conventional DBMS using data and query translation techniques together with a small number of stored procedures. This paper describes Trio-One's translation scheme and system architecture, showing how it efficiently and easily supports the Trio data model and query language
About the Algebraic Solutions of Smallest Enclosing Cylinders Problems
Given n points in Euclidean space E^d, we propose an algebraic algorithm to
compute the best fitting (d-1)-cylinder. This algorithm computes the unknown
direction of the axis of the cylinder. The location of the axis and the radius
of the cylinder are deduced analytically from this direction. Special attention
is paid to the case d=3 when n=4 and n=5. For the former, the minimal radius
enclosing cylinder is computed algebrically from constrained minimization of a
quartic form of the unknown direction of the axis. For the latter, an
analytical condition of existence of the circumscribed cylinder is given, and
the algorithm reduces to find the zeroes of an one unknown polynomial of degree
at most 6. In both cases, the other parameters of the cylinder are deduced
analytically. The minimal radius enclosing cylinder is computed analytically
for the regular tetrahedron and for a trigonal bipyramids family with a
symmetry axis of order 3.Comment: 13 pages, 0 figure; revised version submitted to publication

Model system development and uncertainty for the provisionary management of extreme floods in large river basins
International audienceA research project is introduced in which a modelling system is being developed to quantify risks of extreme flooding in large river basins. In the system, computer models and modules are coupled to simulate the functional chain: hydrology - hydraulics - polder diversion - dyke failure - flooding - damage estimate - risk assessment. In order to reduce uncertainty in flood frequency analyses, data sets are complimented with information from historical chronicles and artwork. Probable maximum precipitation and discharge are calculated to indicate upper bounds of meteorological and hydrological extremes. Uncertainty analysis is investigated for different degrees of model complexity and compared at different basin scales
Pixels and Propaganda: A Primer on Gaming, Gaming-Adjacent Platforms, and Extremism
The intersection of gaming and artificial intelligence with extremism raises complex challenges that demand careful consideration. While video games can serve as a platform for entertainment, social interaction, and skill development, these virtual realms can potentially amplify extremist ideologies. Immersive gaming environments, coupled with sophisticated AI algorithms, may facilitate the creation and spread of radicalizing content or serve as an extremist recruitment ground. Preserving positive aspects of gaming and reducing extremist risk requires collaboration from the gaming industry and community, AI developers, cybersecurity experts, and policymakers

AI Made Me Do It?: How AI is Used to Enhance Malevolent Creativity Idea Generation
Poster on the growing concern over the use of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) (i.e. deepfakes, generated audio, or generated images) causing the spread of political misinformation, especially as we approach the 2024 presidential elections. Specifically, the dissemination of disinformation could prevent voters from submitting ballets and therefore effecting the results of the election
