Disability in the Workplace in China: Situation Assessment
A compelling argument can be made that employment of people with disabilities should be gaining recognition as an underutilized weapon in the talent wars of Asia. One has only to look at the proportion of people with disabilities that make up our communities, the continuing employment disparities that people with disabilities continue to face and the resulting high levels of poverty for this population – up against the talent shortages in fast-growth markets across the region.
As China’s skewed demographic dynamics become increasingly apparent, resulting in a rapidly aging population and a diminishing supply of workforce entrants, an increasing share of the workforce will include older employees with disabilities, necessitating a fundamental change in workplace practices involving people with disabilities, as well as a greater need to look at persons with disabilities as a potential source of talent. Although China has created a broad legislative framework to protect the right to work for persons with disabilities, it lacks specificity and clear measures of enforcement, as evidenced in continued employment marginalization, poor educational outcomes, and thus higher poverty levels of persons with disabilities.
To further understanding of workforce inclusion of persons with disabilities in China, and to identify practical ways forward for employers, The Conference Board China Center and the K. Lisa Yang and Hock E. Tan Institute on Employment and Disability (YTI) at Cornell University’s ILR School partnered to explore how companies can tap the talent pool of people with disabilities and improve their employment outcomes. The scope of the research encompassed a series of interviews with disability rights-focused NGOs in China, a detailed literature review, a comprehensive review of China’s regulatory framework supporting employment for persons with disabilities, and a detailed assessment of the demographics of disability and the status of people with disabilities in China such as prevalence rates, access to education, employment disparities and resulting poverty and household income rates.
This report draws from the broader research findings and provides business practitioners with an overview of the current situation, challenges, and root causes of employment barriers for persons with disabilities in China.
To complement this work, The China Center and YTI convened a practitioner roundtable in Beijing in September 2018. Participants explored in detail how the official, publicly available data on living and working conditions of persons with disabilities compare to actual experiences of employers in China, whether companies are actively recruiting disabled workers, what the internal and external obstacles are to recruitment, and what the impact of the government quota system is, for good or for bad. A separate report on this roundtable is also availabl
Lady Gaga as (dis)simulacrum of monstrosity
Lady Gaga’s celebrity DNA revolves around the notion of monstrosity, an extensively
researched concept in postmodern cultural studies. The analysis that is offered in this
paper is largely informed by Deleuze and Guattari’s notion of monstrosity, as well as
by their approach to the study of sign-systems that was deployed in A Thousand
Plateaus. By drawing on biographical and archival visual data, with a focus on the
relatively underexplored live show, an elucidation is afforded of what is really monstrous
about Lady Gaga. The main argument put forward is that monstrosity as sign
seeks to appropriate the horizon of unlimited semiosis as radical alterity and openness
to signifying possibilities. In this context it is held that Gaga effectively delimits her
unique semioscape; however, any claims to monstrosity are undercut by the inherent
limits of a representationalist approach in sufficiently engulfing this concept. Gaga is
monstrous for her community insofar as she demands of her fans to project their
semiosic horizon onto her as a simulacrum of infinite semiosis. However, this simulacrum
may only be evinced in a feigned manner as a (dis)simulacrum. The analysis of
imagery from seminal live shows during 2011–2012 shows that Gaga’s presumed
monstrosity is more akin to hyperdifferentiation as simultaneous employment of
heterogeneous and potentially dissonant inter pares cultural representations. The article
concludes with a problematisation of audience effects in the light of Gaga’s adoption of
a schematic and post-representationalist strategy in the event of her strategy’s emulation
by competitive artists
Winter term 2011/12 Graduate Seminar Topology S4D2
The action of cohomology operations provides a useful additional structure on the cohomology ring of a space. For a prime number p, the algebra of all stable cohomology operations on cohomology with Z/p-coefficients is known as the Steenrod algebra and admits an explicit characterization in terms of generators and relations. In this seminar, we will construct the Steenrod algebra for p = 2, verify its properties, and give some applications. We will mostly follow the book Cohomology operations and applications in homotopy theory by Mosher and Tangora [MT68] which reappeared in print recently. Mucopolysaccharidosis
Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) refers to a group of inherited lysosomal storage disorders resulting from mutations that lead to production of inadequate enzymes involved in the decomposition of glycosaminoglycans. As a result of the enzyme deficiency, inadequately decomposed mucopolysaccharides accumulate in the cells. All internal organs may be damaged: heart, liver, spleen, hearing, eyesight, teeth, skin, joint problems appear and in many cases the process affects the central nervous system. This is one of the very rare diseases. A description of these diseases was first made in the early 20th century. Depending on the specific enzyme defect, MPS are divided into seven types. With the exception of MPD II- Hunter syndrome, the disease is associated with a defect in the X-chromosome. The overall incidence of the disease is 1 in 29,000 live births. The frequency of the different types varies over 1 to 100 000. The treatment can be palliative, enzyme replacement therapy and stem cell transplantation. In the European Medicines Commission there is a registration for enzyme replacement therapy only for I, II and VI type of MPS. The drug for Type III is at the final experimental stage. Research is also being conducted on a medication for type II, which passes the blood-brain barrier
CEREBRAL VENOUS THROMBOSIS IN PREGNANCY : A CASE REPORT
Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is a rare complication encountered in pregnancy. Symptoms of CVT include headache, limb paresis, seizures , disturbed consciousness , visual disturbances. We present our 25 years old pregnant patient who presented with unsteadiness of gait , weakness and numbness of all four limbs, vomiting headache , giddiness due to which it was difficult for her to perform her daily activities. After the differential diagnostic examinations, we recognised cerebral venous thrombosis. After anti-coagulant treatment , the symptoms resolved. We would like to convey that such symptoms in pregnant women we should always think of CVT
