    In situ detection of microbial respiration in soils and salt flats

    Increase in CO2 partial pressures over a desert soil treated with casamino-acids glucose solution correlated with bacterial growth. Few or no increases in numbers of bacteria or CO2 concentrations were noted in similar plots treated with water only or receiving no treatment. Growth in the soil appeared to be severely nutrient limited during the 10 day experiment. Especially rapid growth took place between the third and fifth day, when temperatures ranged from 0 deg. (night) to a maximum of 17.4 deg. (day). Under the conditions of the experiment, intermittent CO2 assay was an insensitive indicator of growth, possibly because of restiction of gas escape by the desert pavement or solution, exchange, or precipitation of carbonate, but more likely because of inefficient sealing of hoods to and below the soil surface. CO2 assay was unable to detect microbial successions. The unpredictable course of these successions, plus unpredictable relative retentions mitigates against assay of organic gases as reliable in situ detection of microbial activity, except perhaps in very alkaline environments such as Owens Lake salts

    Comparison of free-piston Stirling engine model predictions with RE1000 engine test data

    Predictions of a free-piston Stirling engine model are compared with RE1000 engine test data taken at NASA-Lewis Research Center. The model validation and the engine testing are being done under a joint interagency agreement between the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory and NASA-Lewis. A kinematic code developed at Lewis was upgraded to permit simulation of free-piston engine performance; it was further upgraded and modified at Lewis and is currently being validated. The model predicts engine performance by numerical integration of equations for each control volume in the working space. Piston motions are determined by numerical integration of the force balance on each piston or can be specified as Fourier series. In addition, the model Fourier analyzes the various piston forces to permit the construction of phasor force diagrams. The paper compares predicted and experimental values of power and efficiency and shows phasor force diagrams for the RE1000 engine displacer and piston. Further development plans for the model are also discussed

    Digital computer study of nuclear reactor thermal transients during startup of 60-kWe Brayton power conversion system

    A digital computer study was made of reactor thermal transients during startup of the Brayton power conversion loop of a 60-kWe reactor Brayton power system. A startup procedure requiring the least Brayton system complication was tried first; this procedure caused violations of design limits on key reactor variables. Several modifications of this procedure were then found which caused no design limit violations. These modifications involved: (1) using a slower rate of increase in gas flow; (2) increasing the initial reactor power level to make the reactor respond faster; and (3) appropriate reactor control drum manipulation during the startup transient

    Analysis of regenerated single-shaft ceramic gas-turbine engines and resulting fuel economy in a compact car

    Ranges in design and off-design operating conditions of an advanced gas turbine and their effects on fuel economy were analyzed. The assumed engine incorporated a single stage radial flow turbine and compressor with fixed geometry. Fuel economies were calculated over the composite driving cycle with gasoline as the fuel. At a constant turbine-inlet temperature, with a regenerator sized for a full power effectiveness the best fuel economies ranged from 11.1 to 10.2 km/liter (26.2 to 22.5 mpg) for full power turbine tip speeds of 770 to 488m/sec (2530 to 1600ft/sec), respectively

    Downsizing assessment of automotive Stirling engines

    A 67 kW (90 hp) Stirling engine design, sized for use in a 1984 1440 kg (3170 lb) automobile was the focal point for developing automotive Stirling engine technology. Since recent trends are towards lighter vehicles, an assessment was made of the applicability of the Stirling technology being developed for smaller, lower power engines. Using both the Philips scaling laws and a Lewis Research Center (Lewis) Stirling engine performance code, dimensional and performance characteristics were determined for a 26 kW (35 hp) and a 37 kW (50 hp) engine for use in a nominal 907 kg (2000 lb) vehicle. Key engine elements were sized and stressed and mechanical layouts were made to ensure mechanical fit and integrity of the engines. Fuel economy estimates indicated that the Stirling engine would maintain a 30 to 45 percent fuel economy advantage comparable spark ignition and diesel powered vehicles in the 1984 period

    The Role of Attempt To Monopolize in Antitrust Regulation: An Economic and Social Justification for a New Approach

    Attempt to monopolize is an elusive concept. The number of divergent views demonstrates the complexity the courts face in re-solving the controversy. The first step toward resolution requires are thinking of antitrust values. The many legal tangents have not produced a satisfactory result primarily because they are formulated on a value base that is incompatible with the functional requirements of the competitive process. While economic efficiency is a relevant goal of antitrust, it should not be and has not been the only goal. The evolving socioeconomic structure requires broadly based antitrust policy that acknowledges economic and noneconomic values and facilitates the transition from competitive individualism to a competitive process characterized by stabilization and cooperation.Within the broader policy framework, both economic and noneconomic grounds exist for establishing attempt to monopolize as an offense independent from the completed offense of monopolization.Expansion of attempted monopoly would enable the courts to repair the presently overworked conspiracy doctrine of section one and to develop a workable tool for controlling oligopoly. Because criminal attempt doctrine plays no meaningful role in antitrust analysis, the courts should discard the traditional formulation of attempted monopoly in favor of a rule of reason analogous to that employed under section one. Under the new standard, single-firm conduct and performance would be subject to control under section two, analogous to the section one prohibition of concerted activity. In keeping with desirable antitrust policy, the rule of reason should incorporate economic analysis, but should not adhere to overly stringent standards in proof of market power and nearness to actual monopoly. On the practical level the courts should strike an appropriate balance be-tween the litigants to encourage hearty litigation of meritorious claims

    The article surveys the application of complex-ray theory to the scalar Helmholtz equation in two dimensions. The first objective is to motivate a framework within which complex rays may be used to make predictions about wavefields in a wide variety of geometrical configurations. A crucial ingredient in this framework is the role played by Sp{} in determining the regions of existence of complex rays. The identification of the Stokes surfaces emerges as a key step in the approximation procedure, and this leads to the consideration of the many characterizations of Stokes surfaces, including the adaptation and application of recent developments in exponential asymptotics to the complex Wentzel--Kramers--Brilbuin expansion of these wavefields
