Brexit : changes in cross-market correlation throughout Europe
The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of Brexit on financial markets of Western Europe in the short and long term. To measure the strength of economic linkages between the UK and each of the 16 countries under consideration, cross-market correlation of returns and volatility was analysed before and after the Referendum. I found that in the short-term most stock markets experience negative returns and contagion effects following the Brexit announcement. However, these effects seem to disappear after two weeks and in the long run markets follow a detachment process. Considering potential country-specific variables affecting the scale and direction of those changes, it has been discovered that factors such as pre-Brexit interdependence, geography, trade and size significantly influence market reactions. Mediterranean countries experience consistently stronger market reactions. My results highlight the high degree of interdependence between the UK and most European countries and how Brexit has been changing pre-existing equilibria.O objetivo deste estudo é compreender os efeitos do Brexit nos mercados financeiros dos países da Europa ocidental, a curto e longo prazo.
Analytical Determination of Slot Leakage Field and Inductances of Electric Machines With Double-Layer Windings and Semiclosed Slots
1noSlot leakage field and inductance computation are, in general, nontrivial tasks in the analysis of electric machines equipped with semiclosed slots, even under the hypothesis of neglecting magnetic saturation. This paper proposes an analytical method to evaluate the slot leakage field and inductances in dual-layer distributed winding machines, extending the results of a previous work where the single-layer winding design was addressed. A direct solution to Poisson’s differential equation in the slot domain is found by suitably defining boundary conditions in the slot
opening area. Boundary conditions are defined exploiting the analytical form taken by the magnetic field in the neighborhood of ferromagnetic corner-shaped regions. The presented approach is successfully validated against finite element simulations.partially_openopenTessarolo, AlbertoTessarolo, Albert
A Quadratic-Programming Approach to the Design Optimization of Fractional-Slot Concentrated Windings for Surface Permanent-Magnet Machines
Fractional-slot concentrated windings (FSCW) are becoming more and more popular in the design of permanent magnet electric machines. A well-known drawback of their adoption is the occurrence of large magneto-motive force (MMF) harmonics, which produce eddy-current losses in rotor permanent magnets. The use of a multi-layer design, with coils of different phases wound around the same tooth, is a possible countermeasure to mitigate the problem. In this paper, a new general systematic methodology is proposed to optimize the multilayer FSCW design in the form of a multi-objective quadratic programming problem. The maximization of the MMF fundamental and the minimization of total rotor losses are taken as properly weighed objective functions. Constraints are imposed to guarantee the physical feasibility and the electric symmetry of the winding. An application example to a 9-slot 8-pole machine is presented, together with extensive validations by comparison with finite element analysis (FEA) simulations, to prove the effectiveness of the proposed technique

Thermally activated hydrotalcites display great potential for Carbon Capture processes due to their ability to readily adsorb CO2 at temperatures as high as 300°C. Geopolymers are inorganic binders which couple a facile and low-cost synthesis route with excellent mechanical strength and porosity, making them promising matrix candidates for the immobilisation of active fillers. Various formulations of geopolymer-hydrotalcite composite monoliths with a well-defined macroporous structure were 3D printed through the Direct Ink Writing (DIW) technique, then characterized through compression testing, microscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, XRD and CO2 adsorption tests. The difficult printing of potassium-based geopolymers required the use of carboxymethylcellulose as a rheological additive, whose removal with an appropriate thermal treatment was investigated to avoid performance loss in application. The composites, after thermal activation at 400°C, show high CO2 uptake which increases together with hydrotalcite content, with a better contribution of the K-based geopolymer matrices compared to their Na-based counterparts.Laureando: Tessarolo Marco

Normal Force Elimination in Single-Sided Linear Induction Motor Using Design Parameters
In this article, the normal force acting on the primary of single-sided linear induction motors (SLIMs) is analytically derived. Considering all phenomena involved, the effects of different design variables on the normal force are investigated. In some applications such as transportation systems, the normal force elimination may be required or strongly beneficial, and, in this article, a multi-objective design optimization method based on genetic algorithm is introduced for this purpose, both with and without consideration of primary weight effect. All significant design variables are considered in the optimization. The results show that the motor performance is improved and the normal force is eliminated by an appropriate selection of design variables. To evaluate optimization effectiveness, a laboratory prototype has been constructed, tested, and numerically simulated by finite element analysis (FEA). Comparing the experimental and FEA results with analytical predictions confirms the accuracy and usefulness of the proposed design methodology

Analytical Computation of End-Coil Leakage Inductance of Round-Rotor Synchronous Machines Field Winding
3noThe computation of end coil leakage inductances of electric machines is a challenging task due to the complicated leakage flux 3D distribution in the winding overhang region. In this paper the problem is addressed of computing the field circuit leakage inductance of round-rotor synchronous machines. The proposed method is fully analytical and descends from the symbolical solution of Neumann integrals applied to the computation of self and mutual inductances combined with the method of mirror images to account for core effects. With respect to existing analytical approaches, the methodology requires neither numerical integral solutions nor discretizing the end-coil geometry into small straight elements. The accuracy of the proposed technique for computing the mutual inductance between two single end turns is assessed against measurements on a dedicated experimental set-up. The extension of the method to the
computation of the entire field-circuit end-coil leakage inductance is assessed by comparison with 3D finite element analysis (FEA).Pubblicato online nel settembre 2015 e pubblicato su carta nel febbraio 2016partially_openopenBortolozzi, Mauro; Tessarolo, Alberto; Bruzzese, ClaudioBortolozzi, Mauro; Tessarolo, Alberto; Bruzzese, Claudi
