Enhancement of synthetic jets by means of an integrated valve-less pump Part II. Numerical and experimental studies
The paper studies the performance of the new fluid jet actuator based on the novel principle of the generation of fluid jet, which has been presented in [Z. Travnicek, A.I. Fedorchenko, A.-B. Wang, Enhancement of synthetic jets by means of an integrated valve-less fluid pump. Part I. Design of the actuator, Sens. Actuators A, 120 (2005) 232-240]. The fluid jet actuator consists of a synthetic jet actuator and a valve-less pump. The resulting periodical fluid jet is intrinsically non-zero-net-mass-flux, in contrast to the traditional synthetic jet. The numerical results have been compared with the laboratory experiments comprising phase-locked smoke visualization and time-mean velocity measurements. The results have confirmed the satisfactory performance of the actuator
The Collapse of International Trade During the 2008-2009 Crisis: In Search of the Smoking Gun
One of the most striking aspects of the recent recession is the collapse in international trade. This paper uses disaggregated quarterly and monthly data on U.S. imports and exports to shed light on the anatomy of this collapse. We find that the recent reduction in trade relative to overall economic activity is far larger than in previous downturns. Information on quantities and prices of both domestic absorption and imports reveals a more than 50% shortfall in imports, relative to what would be predicted by a simple import demand relationship. In a sample of imports and exports disaggregated at the 6-digit NAICS level, we find that sectors used as intermediate inputs experienced significantly higher percentage reductions in both imports and exports. We also find support for compositional effects: sectors with larger reductions in domestic output had larger drops in trade. Modeling and simulation of a Stewart platform type parallel structure robot
The kinematics and dynamics of a Stewart Platform type parallel structure robot (NASA's Dynamic Docking Test System) were modeled using the method of kinematic influence coefficients (KIC) and isomorphic transformations of system dependence from one set of generalized coordinates to another. By specifying the end-effector (platform) time trajectory, the required generalized input forces which would theoretically yield the desired motion were determined. It was found that the relationship between the platform motion and the actuators motion was nonlinear. In addition, the contribution to the total generalized forces, required at the actuators, from the acceleration related terms were found to be more significant than the velocity related terms. Hence, the curve representing the total required actuator force generally resembled the curve for the acceleration related force. Another observation revealed that the acceleration related effective inertia matrix I sub dd had the tendency to decouple, with the elements on the main diagonal of I sub dd being larger than the off-diagonal elements, while the velocity related inertia power array P sub ddd did not show such tendency. This tendency results in the acceleration related force curve of a given actuator resembling the acceleration profile of that particular actuator. Furthermore, it was indicated that the effective inertia matrix for the legs is more decoupled than that for the platform. These observations provide essential information for further research to develop an effective control strategy for real-time control of the Dynamic Docking Test System
The Role of Financial Factors in the Trade Collapse: A Skeptic's View
This paper explores the role of financial factors in the 2008-9 collapse of U.S. imports
and exports. Using highly disaggregated international trade data, we examine whether the
cross-sectoral variation in how much imports or exports fell during this episode can be
explained by financial variables. To do this, we employ a wide variety of possible
indicators, such as standard measures of trade credit and external finance dependence,
proxies for shipping lags at the sector level, and shares of intra-firm trade in each sector.
Overall, there is very little evidence that financial factors played a role in the collapse of

The "Collapse in Quality" Hypothesis
This paper evaluates the hypothesis that during the 2008-2009 collapse in international trade, imports of higher quality goods experienced larger reductions compared to low-quality imports, using data on US imports disaggregated by HS-10 product category and source country. We find little, if any, robust econometric evidence in support of this hypothesis.

Dramatic changes in the competitiveness of German and Japanese manufacturing have been most evident since 1988. All three countries are now facing similar challenges, and these challenges are clearly observed in human capital issues. Our comparison of human capital issues in German, Japanese, and US manufacturing leads us to the following key judgments: Manufacturing workforces are undergoing significant changes due to advanced manufacturing technologies. As companies are forced to develop and apply these technologies, the constituency of the manufacturing workforce (especially educational requirements, contingent labor, job content, and continuing knowledge development) is being dramatically and irreversibly altered. The new workforce requirements which result due to advanced manufacturing require a higher level of worker sophistication and responsibility
Implosive Thermal Plasma Source for Energy Conversion
Laboratory scale thermal plasma source for magnetohydrodynamic or magnetocumulative generator was developed. The thermal plasma is created from combustible stochiometric mixture of hydrogen and oxygen by spherical implosion of convergent detonation wave. Resulting high velocity plasma is observed by capturing emitted light by hi-speed camera to determine plasma velocity and also spectroscopically in order to estimate of plasma temperatures. Construction of the implosion plasma source is discussed
