    Sound radiation characteristics of a box-type structure

    The finite element and boundary element methods are employed in this study to investigate the sound radiation characteristics of a box-type structure. It has been shown [T.R. Lin, J. Pan, Vibration characteristics of a box-type structure, Journal of Vibration and Acoustics, Transactions of ASME 131 (2009) 031004-1–031004-9] that modes of natural vibration of a box-type structure can be classified into six groups according to the symmetry properties of the three panel pairs forming the box. In this paper, we demonstrate that such properties also reveal information about sound radiation effectiveness of each group of modes. The changes of radiation efficiencies and directivity patterns with the wavenumber ratio (the ratio between the acoustic and the plate bending wavenumbers) are examined for typical modes from each group. Similar characteristics of modal radiation efficiencies between a box structure and a corresponding simply supported panel are observed. The change of sound radiation patterns as a function of the wavenumber ratio is also illustrated. It is found that the sound radiation directivity of each box mode can be correlated to that of elementary sound sources (monopole, dipole, etc.) at frequencies well below the critical frequency of the plates of the box. The sound radiation pattern on the box surface also closely related to the vibration amplitude distribution of the box structure at frequencies above the critical frequency. In the medium frequency range, the radiated sound field is dominated by the edge vibration pattern of the box. The radiation efficiency of all box modes reaches a peak at frequencies above the critical frequency, and gradually approaches unity at higher frequencies

In the experiment, we achieved this goal with the use only of linear optics, an entangled ancillary pair of photons and post-selection.     Demonstration of efficient scheme for generation of "Event Ready" entangled photon pairs from single photon source

    We present a feasible and efficient scheme, and its proof-of-principle demonstration, of creating entangled photon pairs in an event-ready way using only simple linear optical elements and single photons. The quality of entangled photon pair produced in our experiment is confirmed by a strict violation of Bell's inequality.     Clay flocculation effect on microbial community composition in water and sediment

    Clay-based flocculation techniques have been developed to mitigate harmful algal blooms; however, the potential ecological impacts on the microbial community are poorly understood. In this study, chemical measurements were combined with 16S rRNA sequencing to characterize the microbial community response to different flocculation techniques, including controls, clay flocculation, clay flocculation with zeolite, and clay flocculation with O2 added zeolite capping. Sediment bacterial biomass measured by PLFA were not significantly altered by the various flocculation techniques used. However, 16S rRNA sequencing revealed differences in water microbial community structure between treatments with and without zeolite capping. The differences were related to significant reductions of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP) and ammonia (NH4+) concentration and increase of nitrate (NO3-) concentration in zeolite and O2 loaded zeolite capping. The relative abundance of ammonia oxidizing bacteria increased four-fold in zeolite capping microcosms, suggesting zeolite promoted absorbed ammonia removal in the benthic zone. Zeolite-capping promoted bacteria nitrogen cycling activities at the water-sediment interface. Potential pathogens that are usually adapted to eutrophic water bodies were reduced after clay flocculation. This study demonstrated clay flocculation did not decrease bacterial populations overall and may reduce regulatory indicators and pathogenic contaminants in water. Zeolite capping may also help prevent nutrients from being released back into the water thus preventing additional algal blooms

    Low serum sodium level during cardiopulmonary bypass predicts increased risk of postoperative stroke after coronary artery bypass graft surgery

    ObjectiveRapid decreases in serum sodium levels are associated with altered mental status, seizures, and coma. During cardiac surgery, serum sodium levels decrease rapidly when cardiopulmonary bypass is initiated because cardiopulmonary bypass causes hemodilution. However, whether this decrease influences neurologic outcome after cardiac surgery remains unclear. We investigated whether the average serum sodium level during cardiopulmonary bypass is independently predictive of postoperative stroke or 30-day all-cause mortality in patients who undergo primary coronary artery bypass grafting.MethodsIn a single-institution, retrospective cohort of 2348 consecutive patients who underwent primary, isolated coronary artery bypass grafting, sequential multivariate logistic regression was performed to determine the threshold below which the average serum sodium level during cardiopulmonary bypass independently predicts postoperative stroke or early death. To further test the validity of this threshold and to control for selection bias, stepwise multivariate logistic regression was also performed on propensity score–matched patients (n = 924).ResultsAn average serum sodium level less than 130 mEq/L during cardiopulmonary bypass was independently predictive of stroke, both in the entire study cohort (1.44% vs 2.92%; odds ratio, 2.09; 95% confidence interval, 1.1-4.1; P = .03) and in the propensity-matched patients (0.9% vs 3.0%; odds ratio, 4.1; 95% confidence interval, 1.3-13.0; P = .02). The average serum sodium level during cardiopulmonary bypass was not independently associated with early death, regardless of what threshold value was used.ConclusionsAn average serum sodium level of less than 130 mEq/L during cardiopulmonary bypass is independently associated with an increased risk of postoperative stroke in patients who undergo primary coronary artery bypass grafting

    The Willamette National Forest has worked with Portland State University, Center for Lakes and Reservoirs (PSU) and the University of Oregon (UO) to investigate ecosystem changes, provide guidance on long-term monitoring methods, assess monitoring data, develop predictive water quality models, and conduct research that will lead to better protection and understanding of the Waldo Lake ecosystem. This report summarizes the second year of collaborative PSU-UO research at Waldo Lake. Research has focused on understanding physical, chemical and biological characteristics of Waldo Lake across a range of spatial and temporal scales. Research tasks that continued from 2003 into 2004 included temperature monitoring, hydrodynamic and water quality model development, climate and hydrological forcing scenario investigation, bathymetric map refinement, and analysis of phytoplankton and zooplankton community changes. Research tasks initiated in 2004 included evaluation of wavelength-specific light attenuation, diel phytoplankton and zooplankton vertical distribution patterns, phytoplankton photoinhibition and photoprotection, and the role of mixotrophy in the pelagic microbial food web. Preliminary efforts were made to characterize Waldo Lake benthos through assessment of algal species diversity and chemical composition of the benthic community, as very little is currently known about the Waldo Lake benthic ecosystem. In addition, an attempt was made to map benthic substrate types through reinterpretation of data collected during the 2003 bathymetric survey

    Key Roles for E2F1 in Signaling p53-Dependent Apoptosis and in Cell Division within Developing Tumors

    AbstractApoptosis induced by the p53 tumor suppressor can attenuate cancer growth in preclinical animal models. Inactivation of the pRb proteins in mouse brain epithelium by the T121 oncogene induces aberrant proliferation and p53-dependent apoptosis. p53 inactivation causes aggressive tumor growth due to an 85% reduction in apoptosis. Here, we show that E2F1 signals p53-dependent apoptosis since E2F1 deficiency causes an 80% apoptosis reduction. E2F1 acts upstream of p53 since transcriptional activation of p53 target genes is also impaired. Yet, E2F1 deficiency does not accelerate tumor growth. Unlike normal cells, tumor cell proliferation is impaired without E2F1, counterbalancing the effect of apoptosis reduction. These studies may explain the apparent paradox that E2F1 can act as both an oncogene and a tumor suppressor in experimental systems
