Evaluating the Mentor-Mentee Relationship in the 4-H Tech Wizards Program
Youth rely on mentors to provide camaraderie, encouragement, and guidance. The authors asserted that the measurement of youth-mentor relationship would vastly improve the reaching effects of mentorship and expose areas of potential improvement. A questionnaire was given to youth at the beginning and end of a small group mentoring program. The Mentor-Youth Inventory survey exposed levels of emotional engagement, revealed satisfaction levels, and uncovered the breadth of relationships within the program. The study provides evidence that measuring and establishing a benchmark for the quality of youth-mentor relationships facilitates the opportunity to increase the value of small group mentoring in Extension
Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg-Majorana interferometry of a single hole
We perform Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg-Majorana (LZSM) spectroscopy on a system
with strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI), realized as a single hole confined in
a gated double quantum dot. In analogy to the electron systems, at magnetic
field B=0 and high modulation frequencies we observe the photon-assisted
tunneling (PAT) between dots, which smoothly evolves into the typical LZSM
funnel-shaped interference pattern as the frequency is decreased. In contrast
to electrons, the SOI enables an additional, efficient spin-flipping interdot
tunneling channel, introducing a distinct interference pattern at finite B.
Magneto-transport spectra at low-frequency LZSM driving show the two channels
to be equally coherent. High-frequency LZSM driving reveals complex
photon-assisted tunneling pathways, both spin-conserving and spin-flipping,
which form closed loops at critical magnetic fields. In one such loop an
arbitrary hole spin state is inverted, opening the way toward its
all-electrical manipulation.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, and supplementary materia

Configuring the Ubiquitous Home
Abstract. This paper presents the development of a lightweight component model that allows user to manage the introduction and arrangement of new interactive services and devices in the home. Interaction techniques developed through userparticipation enable household members – rather than designers – to configure an
User-centered development of a Virtual Research Environment to support collaborative research events
This paper discusses the user-centred development process within the Collaborative Research Events on the Web (CREW) project, funded under the JISC Virtual Research Environments (VRE) programme. After presenting the project, its aims and the functionality
of the CREW VRE, we focus on the user engagement approach, grounded in the method of co-realisation. We describe the different research settings and requirements of our three embedded user groups and the respective activities conducted so far. Finally we elaborate on
the main challenges of our user engagement approach and end with the project’s next steps
Feasibility of developing children's Pill School within a UK hospital
OBJECTIVE: We assessed the feasibility of introducing an intervention (children's Pill School-PS) within a UK hospital to provide swallowing training for children, identified the proportion of children who can be switched from oral liquid medicines to pills and assessed children/parents' opinions about the PS training. METHODS: 30 inpatient children (aged 3-18 years; taking oral liquid medicines; their liquid medications assessed suitable for switching to pills; can (and their parents) speak/understand English were included. Training sessions were delivered using hard sweets of different sizes. RESULTS: 87% (26) of children successfully learnt how to swallow pills after one training session (mean duration 14.5 min), and 92% (24) were discharged on pills. 75 prescribed oral liquid medications were deemed suitable for switching to pills. Of these, 89% (67) were switched successfully. CONCLUSION: Children as young as 3 years were successful in swallowing pills after training. Providing children PS training session within hospital is feasible and acceptable to children and their parents
