Bargaining structures, rent-seeking effect and endogenous growth.
Market power of workers on wages is bound to affect economic performances. This paper focuses on this issue and analyse the influence of bargaining structures on growth and labor market functioning. To achieve this, we construct an endogenous growth model where growth appears as the result of a learning-by-doing process whereas imperfect information in the labor market implies matching frictions in the hiring process. If investment occurs before wage bargaining, the growth process can be durably altered. In this case, a higher bargaining power of worker does not give a clear-cut effect on growth.Bargaining structures; Equilibrium Unemployment; Endogenous growth; Learning-by-doing.
The scarring effect of unemployment in ten European countries : an analysis based on the ECHP.
This paper investigates the effect of unemployment on earnings for ten European countries. Using an harmonised database (ECHP), we estimate the impact of declared unemployment on individuals while taking account of attrition and unobserved individual heterogeneity. We find that the unemployment effect differs by country and gender. The wage penalty is greater for men than for women. It is also higher in the more flexible economies. We suggest that labour market institutions such as unemployment benefits and wage-setting institutions may be avenues of investigation to explain these differences.Unemployment, Unobserved heterogeneity, post unemployment earnings.
Are The State and The Family Unit Substitutable in The Financial Support of The Unemployed in Europe? A Comparison Based on The European Panel
The financial support of the unemployed falls to both the State and the family. The European panel data for the period 1995-2000 shows a difference between the countries of Northern Europe, where the State plays a preponderant role, and those of Southern Europe, where the contribution from the family compensates for a less generous State intervention. In the majority of the EU-10, State unemployment benefits appear to be greater when the financial support from the family is small, and are quite meagre when the family contribution is considerable. The family contribution does not fully compensate the disparities of State support observed between the countries: the standards of living of the unemployed remain highly contrasted and continue to reflect the disparities between the unemployment benefits systems.Unemployment Compensation, Well-Being, Family Structure

Preoperative Embolization of Hypervascular Castleman's Disease of the Mediastinum
We report the case of a 31-year-old woman with mediastinal Castleman's disease of the hyaline vascular type. This large tumor was safely resected after arterial embolization. We describe the steps of this interventional procedure and discuss related necessary precaution
Image-guided multipolar radiofrequency ablation of liver tumours: initial clinical results
The local effectiveness and clinical usefulness of multipolar radiofrequency (RF) ablation of liver tumours was evaluated. Sixty-eight image-guided RF sessions were performed using a multipolar device with bipolar electrodes in 53 patients. There were 45 hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) and 42 metastases with a diameter ≤3cm (n = 55), 3.1-5cm (n = 29) and >5cm (n = 3); 26 nodules were within 5mm from large vessels. Local effectiveness and complications were evaluated after RF procedures. Mean follow-up was 17 ± 10months. Recurrence and survival rates were analysed by the Kaplan-Meier method. The primary and secondary technical effectiveness rate was 82% and 95%, respectively. The major and minor complication rate was 2.9%, respectively. The local tumour progression at 1- and 2-years was 5% and 9% for HCC nodules and 17% and 31% for metastases, respectively; four of 26 nodules (15%) close to vessels showed local progression. The survival at 1year and 2years was 97% and 90% for HCC and 84% and 68% for metastases, respectively. Multipolar RF technique creates ablation zones of adequate size and tailored shape and is effective to treat most liver tumours, including those close to major hepatic vessel
