    The Efficiency of Organizational Withdrawal vs Commitment

    National audienceActors within an organization usually do not behave as expected at design-time. There are diverse reasons for this, notably the actors' motivation and organizational commitment. In this paper, we explore the efficiency of a concrete public organization in the context of the Latin-American culture, to the light of the organizational commitment of its members. In order to evaluate how much each member of the organization is committed, we associate to each one a parameter that quantifies its commitment and we evaluate by simulation the impact of this parameter on its behavior an the organization performance. With a model of the organization as it was intended to operate at its foundation, we proceed to a number of simulations to find the parameter values that yield the actual observed working of the organization. By the way, we found that withdrawn behaviors have much more impact than committed ones

    Modeling and Simulating Moral Emotions in Organizations: exploring its impact on collaboration

    International audienceThe paper presents how moral sensitivity and emotions are modeled in organizational setting by using the SocLab formal framework. Additionally simulation results, including an interesting tendency for a Free Rider model, will be given. SocLab is a platform for the modeling, simulation and analysis of cooperation relationships within social organizations - and more generally Sys-tems of Organized Action. Taking into account the fact that decision-making processes are not merely driven by instrumental interest, the SocLab learning simulation algorithm has been extended to represent moral sensitivity, so actors can prevent bad emotions and search for good emotions. To this end, a moral sensitivity parameter has been introduced in the algorithm to equip virtual ac-tors with moral and emotional behaviour

    Identifying Emotions in Organizational Settings : towards dealing with morality

    International audienceEmotions play an essential role in the behaviour of human beings, either at their sudden occurrence or by the continuous care to prevent the occurrence of unpleasant ones and to search for the occurrence of pleasant ones. Notably, in any system of collective action, they influence the behaviours of the actors with respect to each others. SocLab is a framework devoted to the study of the functioning of social organizations, through the agent-based modelling of their structure and the simulation of the processes by which the actors adjust their behaviours the one to another and so regulate the organization. This position paper shows how SocLab enables to characterize the configurations of an organization that are likely to arouse different kinds of social emotions in the actors, in order to cope with the emotional dimension of their behaviours. The case of a concrete organization is introduced to illustrate this approach and its usefulness for a deeper understanding of the functioning of organizations

    The influence of moral sensitivity on organizational cooperation

    International audienceThe purpose of this paper is to present how to model moral sensitivity and emotions in organizational setting by using the SocLab formal framework. SocLab is a platform for the modelling, simulation and analysis of cooperation relationships within social organizations – and more generally Systems of Organized Action. Design/methodology/approach – Simulation results, including an interesting tendency for a Free Rider model, will be given. Considering that actors’ decision-making processes are not just driven by instrumental interest, the SocLab learning simulation algorithm has been extended to represent moral sensitivity, making actors trying to prevent bad emotions and feel good ones.Findings – Some simulation results about actors’ collaboration and emotions in a Free Rider model were presented. A noteworthy tendency is that actors’ unconditional collaboration, which occurs when their moral sensitivity reaches its highest value, is not so good since it exempts other actors from collaboration (they take advantage from the unconditional collaboration), while values of moral sensitivity somewhat below the highest value (between 0.7 and 0.9) still induces collaboration from others.Originality/value – The research and results presented in this paper have not been presented in other papers or workshops. The presented quantitative definition of emotions (determining indexes of emotions) is different to previous approaches – for instance, to Ortony, Clore and Collins (OCC) qualitative descriptions and to logical descriptions. Similarly, simulation of morality in organizations is a new research field, which has received scarce attention up to now

    RESUMENEl presente artículo presenta una forma de hacer gestión de software para entes públicos bajo la noción de prestación de servicios, de acuerdo a los lineamientos del Estado Venezolano. En particular, el Estado Venezolano ha estado promoviendo el uso del software libre a fin de potenciar la soberanía tecnológica y el desarrollo endógeno. Para lograr la gestión de servicios de software colectivo o público, se hace necesario recurrir a herramientas y a metodologías que permitan una gestión inclusiva de estos aspectos, que permita la participación de las comunidades, como la planificación estratégica y la prospectiva tecnológica. Por otro lado, es necesario también incluir ciertos elementos administrativos del desarrollo orientado a la filosofía “software libre”, con sentido social y comunitario, para lo cual se ha recurrido a tomar ideas de varios métodos de desarrollo de software, tales como XP, RUPy MoProSoft. La forma de hacer la gestión propuesta está siendo seguida en la Fábrica de Software Libre del Centro Nacionalde Desarrollo e Investigación en Tecnologías Libres, el cual atiende a diversos entes y comunidades de la Nación Venezolana. De esta manera, la propuesta también se ha nutrido de la creatividad y del aprendizaje derivado de la praxis desarrollada en dicho centro en el cual existen tres procesos fundamentales para el manejo de proyectos de software, estos son, gestión de proyectos, administración de proyectos específicos y desarrollo de aplicaciones basadas en el uso de componentes, esto ultimo facilita la reutilización de código fuente existente. PALABRAS CLAVE Metodología de desarrollo de softwareSoftware LibreGestión de proyectos de softwareGobierno software administración pública ABSTRACTThis paper presents an approach to manage aspect related to software projects for public administration under the notion of service providers, following Venezuela state laws and government lines. The nation is particularly interested in free software in order to increase technologic sovereignty and endogenous development. On the one side, it is needed the use of tools and methods that allow an inclusive management for these aspects, and the participation of different communities, such as strategic planning and technologic prospective. On the other side, it is important to include some other management elements for software development,which will be brought in from a diversity of software development methods and models such as Extreme Programming, Rational Unified Process, and MoProSoft; as well as from practice and experience. This approach is being implemented by the Free Software Factory of the NationalResearch and Development Center for Free Technologies, which gives support to many Venezuelan official entities and communities.     Simulation modelThe model represents a team intended at designing a methodology for Institutional Planning in the Public Sector (team for designing a Planning-Methodology, or TDPM). In general the goal of the model is to investigate how collaborative behaviour appears in the TDPM and on which elements of the model (e.g., parameters, emotions or morality) such behaviour depends on, in order to suggest policies for promoting collaboration, and thus a better product. The suggestions from the simulation for these variables can be interpreted and then implemented in terms of policies to increase, for instance, friendship or group cohesion.     International audienceThe Venezuelan system of potatoes and potato seeds production endures many deficiencies, while potatoes use to be a basic component of inhabitants' food. To uncover the deep roots of these deficiencies, we propose a simulation model of this system and combine structural properties of the model with simulation results in order to consolidate the validity of the model, elucidate some of its key features and suggest a way likely to improve its fairness. The model is designed using the SocLab framework, a formalisation of Systems of Organized Action that considers how regulation emerges from balances between the power relationships processes of social actors
