RGtk2: A Graphical User Interface Toolkit for R
Graphical user interfaces (GUIs) are growing in popularity as a complement or alternative to the traditional command line interfaces to R. RGtk2 is an R package for creating GUIs in R. The package provides programmatic access to GTK+ 2.0, an open-source GUI toolkit written in C. To construct a GUI, the R programmer calls RGtk2 functions that map to functions in the underlying GTK+ library. This paper introduces the basic concepts underlying GTK+ and explains how to use RGtk2 to construct GUIs from R. The tutorial is based on simple and pratical programming examples. We also provide more complex examples illustrating the advanced features of the package. The design of the RGtk2 API and the low-level interface from R to GTK+ are discussed at length. We compare RGtk2 to alternative GUI toolkits for R.
COALITIONS IN ENGLISH LOCAL GOVERNMENT: PARTY POLITICAL STRATEGIES IN HUNG COUNCILS
This work takes a multi-method approach to the study of hung English councils.
Insights and suppositions from a variety of approaches are utilised, including formal
coalition theory and case studies of local authorities. A major aim of the thesis is to
analyse questionnaire and case study data which will further improve our
understanding of coalitional activity. Although the primary purpose is to inform the
student of hung councils, formal coalition theories are also tested.
This study provides the first clear evidence that elected political elites lose power to
the body of councillors in most hung councils. However, the power of the
bureaucratic elite, unlike their political counterparts, appears to remain relatively
constant. Contrary to previous proposals, decision making is not characterised by
uncertainty and confusion; a learning process takes place in hung councils, and the
views of participants become more favourable over time.
The influence of the centre party is a recurring theme of the study. Whether payoffs
are office or policy, the Liberal Democrats are the primary beneficiary in hung
English councils. Their commitment to a more open form of decision making and
willingness to bargain with other parties may be contributing reasons for their
success, but it is their ideological position in the middle of the two main parties
which is offered as the primary reason for the influence they wield.
None of the formal theories of coalition formation and duration perform well in
predictive terms. Overall, the most accurate prediction of administrative formation
would posit a minority administration formed by the largest party group, although
majority coalitions are becoming more prevalent. Contrary to expectations,
minority administrations are also more durable than coalitions. The large number of
minority administrations demonstrates that not all politicians are 'office-driven',
and that policy pay-offs are crucial. Policy closeness appears to be a greater
influence on duration than either ideological connectedness or coalition size.UNIVERSITY COLLEGE, GALWA
DNA Feature Selection for Discriminating WirelessHART IIoT Devices
This paper summarizes demonstration activity aimed at applying Distinct Native Attribute (DNA) feature selection methods to improve the computational efficiency of time domain fingerprinting methods used to discriminate Wireless Highway Addressable Remote Transducer (WirelessHART) devices being used in Industrial (IIoT) applications. Efficiency is achieved through Dimensional Reduction Analysis (DRA) performed here using both pre-classification analytic (WRS and ReliefF) and post-classification relevance (RndF and GRLVQI) feature selection methods. Comparative assessments are based on statistical fingerprint features extracted from experimentally collected WirelessHART signals, with Multiple Discrimination Analysis, Maximum Likelihood (MDA/ML) estimation showing that pre-classification methods are collectively superior to post-classification methods. Specific DRA results show that an average cross-class percent correct classification differential of 8% †%CD †1% can be maintained using DRA selected feature sets containing as few as 24 (10%) of the 243 full-dimensional features. Reducing fingerprint dimensionality reduces computational efficiency and improves the potential for operational implementation

An Optimization Framework for Generalized Relevance Learning Vector Quantization with Application to Z-Wave Device Fingerprinting
Z-Wave is low-power, low-cost Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) technology supporting Critical Infrastructure (CI) systems that are interconnected by government-to-internet pathways. Given that Z-wave is a relatively unsecure technology, Radio Frequency Distinct Native Attribute (RF-DNA) Fingerprinting is considered here to augment security by exploiting statistical features from selected signal responses. Related RF-DNA efforts include use of Multiple Discriminant Analysis (MDA) and Generalized Relevance Learning Vector Quantization-Improved (GRLVQI) classifiers, with GRLVQI outperforming MDA using empirically determined parameters. GRLVQI is optimized here for Z-Wave using a full factorial experiment with spreadsheet search and response surface methods. Two optimization measures are developed for assessing Z-Wave discrimination: 1) Relative Accuracy Percentage (RAP) for device classification, and 2) Mean Area Under the Curve (AUCM) for device identity (ID) verification. Primary benefits of the approach include: 1) generalizability to other wireless device technologies, and 2) improvement in GRLVQI device classification and device ID verification performance
Dimensional Reduction Analysis for Constellation-Based DNA Fingerprinting to Improve Industrial IoT Wireless Security
The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) market is skyrocketing towards 100 billion deployed devices and cybersecurity remains a top priority. This includes security of ZigBee communication devices that are widely used in industrial control system applications. IIoT device security is addressed using Constellation-Based Distinct Native Attribute (CB-DNA) Fingerprinting to augment conventional bit-level security mechanisms. This work expands upon recent CB-DNA âdiscoveryâ activity by identifying reduced dimensional fingerprints that increase the computational efficiency and effectiveness of device discrimination methods. The methods considered include Multiple Discriminant Analysis (MDA) and Random Forest (RndF) classification. RndF deficiencies in classification and post-classification feature selection are highlighted and addressed using a pre-classification feature selection method based on a Wilcoxon Rank Sum (WRS) test. Feature down-selection based on WRS testing proves to very reliable, with reduced feature subsets yielding cross-device discrimination performance consistent with full-dimensional feature sets, while being more computationally efficient
This article presents extracts from three unpublished documents found in Marcel LâHerbierâs archives. These three scenarios were seemingly written by the filmmaker during the 1920s and 1930s in preparation for a film adaptation of Oscar Wildeâs The Picture of Dorian Gray. This ambitious â project to which I am more attached than any other â, however, was never realised, despite the considerable efforts that LâHerbier devoted to it for more than twenty years. Our analysis seeks to highlight the different strategies adopted by the filmmaker, firstly with a view to a silent movie, and later in relation to a sound film. The first strategy is characterised by a strong tendency towards âmelodramatisationâ of Wildeâs story, both in moral and narrative terms. The second is more faithful to the original text and allows a greater freedom to Wildeâs brilliant wordplay and subversive wit
