    Electrochemical determination of oncocalyxone A using an iron-phthalocyanine/iron-porphyrin modified glassy carbon electrode

    The development of a highly sensitive voltammetric sensor for oncocalyxone A using a glassy carbon electrode modified with a bilayer iron(II) tetrasulfonated phthalocyanine (FeTSPc) and iron(III) tetra-(N-methyl-4-pyridyl)-porphyrin (FeT4MPyP) is described. The modified electrode showed high catalytic activity and stability for the oncocalyxone A reduction, provoking the anodic shift of the reduction peak potentials of ca. 30 mV and presenting much higher peak currents than those obtained on the bare GC electrode. A wide linear response range between 0.005-1.2 µmol L-1, with a sensitivity of 8.11 µA L µmol-1 and limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) of 1.5 and 5 nmol L-1 were obtained with this sensor.Descreve-se, no presente trabalho, o desenvolvimento de um sensor voltamétrico altamente sensível para a oncocalixona A, utilizando-se eletrodo de carbono vítreo modificado com uma bi-camada de ftalocianina tetrassulfonada de ferro(II) (FeTSPc) e tetra-(N-metil-4-piridil)-porfirina de ferro(III) (FeT4MPyP). O eletrodo modificado apresentou alta atividade catalítica e estabilidade em relação à redução da oncocalixona, proporcionando deslocamento anódico de ca. de 30 mV e amplificação da corrente de pico, em relação a iguais parâmetros obtidos em eletrodo de carbono vítreo não modificado.     Spectrochemical analysis in blood plasma combined with subsequent chemometrics for fibromyalgia detection

    Fibromyalgia is a rheumatologic condition characterized by multiple and chronic body pain, and other typical symptoms such as intense fatigue, anxiety and depression. It is a very complex disease where treatment is often made by non-medicated alternatives in order to alleviate symptoms and improve the patient’s quality of life. Herein, we propose a method to detect patients with fibromyalgia (n = 252, 126 controls and 126 patients with fibromyalgia) through the analysis of their blood plasma using attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy in conjunction with chemometric techniques, hence, providing a low-cost, fast and accurate diagnostic approach. Different chemometric algorithms were tested to classify the spectral data; genetic algorithm with linear discriminant analysis (GA-LDA) achieved the best diagnostic results with a sensitivity of 89.5% in an external test set. The GA-LDA model identified 24 spectral wavenumbers responsible for class separation; amongst these, the Amide II (1,545 cm−1) and proteins (1,425 cm−1) were identified to be discriminant features. These results reinforce the potential of ATR-FTIR spectroscopy with multivariate analysis as a new tool to screen and detect patients with fibromyalgia in a fast, low-cost, non-destructive and minimally invasive fashion

    Magnetic nanosystem for cancer therapy using oncocalyxone A, an antitomour secondary metabolite isolated from a Brazilian plant

    none14siThis paper describes the investigation and development of a novel magnetic drug delivery nanosystem (labeled as MO-20) for cancer therapy. The drug employed was oncocalyxone A (onco A), which was isolated from Auxemma oncocalyx, an endemic Brazilian plant. It has a series of pharmacological properties: antioxidant, cytotoxic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antitumor and antiplatelet. Onco A was associated with magnetite nanoparticles in order to obtain magnetic properties. The components of MO-20 were characterized by XRD, FTIR, TGA, TEM and Magnetization curves. The MO-20 presented a size of about 30 nm and globular morphology. In addition, drug releasing experiments were performed, where it was observed the presence of the anomalous transport.     Constituintes químicos de Capraria biflora (Scrophulariaceae) e atividade larvicida de seu óleo essencial

    Analysis of essential oil from fresh leaves of Capraria biflora allowed identification of fourteen essential oil constituents among which thirteen are sesquiterpene compounds, and α-humulene (43.0%) the major constituent. The essential oil was tested for larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti showing good activity, with LC50 73.39 µg/mL (2.27 g/mL). Chromatographic studies of extracts from roots and stems allowed the isolation of five compounds: naphthoquinone biflorin, sesquiterpene caprariolide B, the steroid β-sitosterol, the carbohydrate D-mannitol and iridoid myopochlorin first reported in the species C. biflora.
