    The purpose of this study is to show that since the beginning of Spanish civilization, picaresque elements existed among the Spanish people; that these elements have been preserved by Spaniards through all these centuries; and that Spaniards value the picaresque at the present time. To do this, picaresque literature will be studied from the first known novels to the present time. This peculiar form of literature will be compared with Spanish life as well and with the life reflected in the folklore of New Mexico

    Lyndon Array Construction during Burrows-Wheeler Inversion

    In this paper we present an algorithm to compute the Lyndon array of a string TT of length nn as a byproduct of the inversion of the Burrows-Wheeler transform of TT. Our algorithm runs in linear time using only a stack in addition to the data structures used for Burrows-Wheeler inversion. We compare our algorithm with two other linear-time algorithms for Lyndon array construction and show that computing the Burrows-Wheeler transform and then constructing the Lyndon array is competitive compared to the known approaches. We also propose a new balanced parenthesis representation for the Lyndon array that uses 2n+o(n)2n+o(n) bits of space and supports constant time access. This representation can be built in linear time using O(n)O(n) words of space, or in O(nlogn/loglogn)O(n\log n/\log\log n) time using asymptotically the same space as TT

    Physiology of long pranayamic breathing: Neural respiratory elements may provide a mechanism that explains how slow deep breathing shifts the autonomic nervous system

    Pranayamic breathing, defined as a manipulation of breath movement, has been shown to contribute to a physiologic response characterized by the presence of decreased oxygen consumption, decreased heart rate, and decreased blood pressure, as well as increased theta wave amplitude in EEG recordings, increased parasympathetic activity accompanied by the experience of alertness and reinvigoration. The mechanism of how pranayamic breathing interacts with the nervous system affecting metabolism and autonomic functions remains to be clearly understood. It is our hypothesis that voluntary slow deep breathing functionally resets the autonomic nervous system through stretchinduced inhibitory signals and hyperpolarization currents propagated through both neural and non-neural tissue which synchronizes neural elements in the heart, lungs, limbic system and cortex. During inspiration, stretching of lung tissue produces inhibitory signals by action of slowly adapting stretch receptors (SARs) and hyperpolarization current by action of fibroblasts. Both inhibitory impulses and hyperpolarization current are known to synchronize neural elements leading to the modulation of the nervous system and decreased metabolic activity indicative of the parasympathetic state. In this paper we propose pranayama’s physiologic mechanism through a cellular and systems level perspective,involving both neural and non-neural elements. This theoretical description describes a common physiological mechanism underlying pranayama and elucidate the role of the respiratory and cardiovascular system on modulating the autonomic nervous system. Along with facilitating the design of clinical breathing techniques for the treatment of autonomic nervous system and other disorders, this model will also validate pranayama as a topic requiring more research

    Aborda a importância da organização das informações para que uma empresa se torne inovadora, visualizando novos produtos, processos e serviços e mantendo-se aberta a mudanças constantes em sua gestão, no intuito de superar as transformações advindas de uma sociedade globalizada. Descreve o desenvolvimento de um sistema implantado com o objetivo de organizar as informações do Serviço de Atendimento ao Cidadão (SAC) em duas unidades da Embrapa, para nortear e otimizar futuras ações de transferência de tecnologias. Foram consideradas teorias que discutem a questão da dinâmica da modernidade e da globalização, como as de Baumann e Giddens, além da teoria sobre a organização da informação e do conhecimento em empresas, desenvolvida por Choo. Também são mencionadas algumas definições do processo de transferência de tecnologias e a importância dessas teorias para esse processo. A metodologia utilizada englobou alguns instrumentos, como a análise de Forças, Oportunidades, Fraquezas e ameaças (FOFA), o modelo de casos de uso e a análise de conteúdo. Apresentam-se os resultados atingidos na Embrapa Solos, ainda preliminares, mas que apontam melhorias significativas no processo de atendimento ao cidadão, como a possibilidade de fornecer perguntas e respostas a priori, o que diminuiu o número de perguntas repetidas mensais, evitando o retrabalho

    Baade's red sheet resolved into stars with HST in the Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxy VII Zw 403

    HST WFPC2 observations of the nearby Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxy VII~Zw~403 (= UGC 6456) resolve single stars down to MI_I\approx-2.5, deep enough to identify red giants. This population has a more uniform spatial distribution than the young main-sequence stars and supergiants, forming the structure known as "Baade's red sheet".     On the feedback from super stellar clusters. I. The structure of giant HII regions and HII galaxies

    We review the structural properties of giant extragalactic HII regions and HII galaxies based on 2D hydrodynamic calculations, and propose an evolutionary sequence that accounts for their observed detailed structure. The model assumes a massive and young stellar cluster surrounded by a large collection of clouds. These are thus exposed to the most important star-formation feedback mechanisms: photoionization and the cluster wind. The models show how the two feedback mechanisms compete in the disruption of clouds and lead to two different hydrodynamic solutions: The storage of clouds into a long lasting ragged shell that inhibits the expansion of the thermalized wind, and the steady filtering of the shocked wind gas through channels carved within the cloud stratum. Both solutions are claimed to be concurrently at work in giant HII regions and HII galaxies, causing their detailed inner structure. This includes multiple large-scale shells, filled with an X-ray emitting gas, that evolve to finally merge with each other, giving the appearance of shells within shells. The models also show how the inner filamentary structure of the giant superbubbles is largely enhanced with matter ablated from clouds and how cloud ablation proceeds within the original cloud stratum. The calculations point at the initial contrast density between the cloud and the intercloud media as the factor that defines which of the two feedback mechanisms becomes dominant throughout the evolution.     Capture Velocity for a Magneto-Optical Trap in a Broad Range of Light Intensity

    In a recent paper, we have used the dark-spot Zeeman tuned slowing technique [Phys. Rev. A 62, 013404-1, (2000)] to measure the capture velocity as a function of laser intensity for a sodium magneto optical trap. Due to technical limitation we explored only the low light intensity regime, from 0 to 27 mW/cm^2. Now we complement that work measuring the capture velocity in a broader range of light intensities (from 0 to 400 mW/cm^2). New features, observed in this range, are important to understant the escape velocity behavior, which has been intensively used in the interpretation of cold collisions. In particular, we show in this brief report that the capture velocity has a maximum as function of the trap laser intensity, which would imply a minimum in the trap loss rates.Comment: 2 pages, 2 figure

    Chemical Properties of Star-Forming Emission Line Galaxies at z=0.1 - 0.5

    We measure oxygen and nitrogen abundances for 14 star-forming emission line galaxies (ELGs) at 0.11<z<0.5 using Keck/LRIS optical spectroscopy. The targets exhibit a range of metallicities from slightly metal-poor like the LMC to super-solar. Oxygen abundances of the sample correlate strongly with rest-frame blue luminosities. The metallicity-luminosity relation based on these 14 objects is indistinguishable from the one obeyed by local galaxies, although there is marginal evidence (1.1sigma) that the sample is slightly more metal-deficient than local galaxies of the same luminosity. The observed galaxies exhibit smaller emission linewidths than local galaxies of similar metallicity, but proper corrections for inclination angle and other systematic effects are unknown. For 8 of the 14 objects we measure nitrogen-to-oxygen ratios. Seven of 8 systems show evidence for secondary nitrogen production, with log(N/O)> -1.4 like local spirals. These chemical properties are inconsistent with unevolved objects undergoing a first burst of star formation. The majority of the ELGs are presently ~4 magnitudes brighter and ~0.5 dex more metal-rich than the bulk of the stars in well-known metal-poor dwarf spheroidals such as NGC 205 and NGC 185, making an evolution between some ELGs and metal-poor dwarf spheroidals improbable. However, the data are consistent with the hypothesis that more luminous and metal-rich spheroidal galaxies like NGC 3605 may become the evolutionary endpoints of some ELGs.
