    Light Dynamics in the Damariscotta River Estuary With Implications for Microphytobenthos

    Predicting benthic light fields in the Damariscotta River Estuary (DRE) allows us to evaluate optimal microphytobenthos habitat, and determine the most the productive regions of the DRE. A model was created using instantaneous photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) to predict the spatial distribution of sufficient light fields for primary production along the benthos of the estuary. PAR was collected at six stations oriented N- S along the DRE during late September in 2016 and 2017. Calculated at each station was Z1%, experimental and model diffuse coefficients of light (Kd), and the optimal light level depth for microphytobenthos production. Light fields were extrapolated between stations over bathymetric data of the DRE. Optimal light fields for microphytobenthos primary production are present along the edges of the entire DRE, and above 43.91o N. Light only reaches the benthos at the head of the estuary, and more light penetrated the water column in 2017. Light attenuates as a function of the concentration of scattering and absorbing agents, and spectral quality has a direct relationship with depth

    Bilateral Shoulder Arthritis in COVID-19 Patient After Prolonged Mechanical Ventilation Assist: a Case Report

    Prolonged immobilization and, in particular, mechanical ventilation, have been linked to muscle atrophy. Anecdotal reports in the literature describe rhabdomyolysis as a potential late complication of COVID-19 infection which, in severe cases, may coexist with fluid collections. We report a case of a 28-year-old patient that had been recently hospitalized with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia, with need for invasive ventilation support. Days after being discharged, the patient presents with retrosternal thoracalgia irradiating to the left upper limb. On physical examination, abduction and external rotation were limited due to pain complaints and there was soft tissue swelling of the corresponding shoulder and arm. Imaging evaluation was essential to establish the underlying condition, revealing bilateral arthritis communicating with large rotator cuff collections, which was considered of septic nature.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Complete mitochondrial genomes of the freshwater mussels Amblema plicata (Say, 1817), Pleurobema oviforme (Conrad, 1834), and Popenaias popeii (Lea, 1857) (Bivalvia: Unionidae: Ambleminae)

    Freshwater mussels are a critically imperiled group of mollusks that play key ecological roles and provide important services to humans. The Ambleminae is the only subfamily of these mussels, endemic to North America. Complete mitogenomes have only been sequenced for two of five tribes of the subfamily. Pleurobema oviforme, Amblema plicata, and Popenaias popeii each belong to tribes Pleurobemini, Amblemini, and Popenaidini, respectively, and have not had published mitogenomes. Thus, this study aims to present the complete mitogenomes for these species, to provide a phylogeny of the Ambleminae and confirm the gene arrangements with representation from each of its tribes.
