    [[abstract]]Part 1 of this paper [Appl. Opt. 14, 666 (1975)] dealt with the cw radar and analog communications uses of three-frequency nonlinear heterodyne detection. In this paper, we evaluate the technique for a number of specific pulsed radar and digital communications applications. Both the vacuum channel and the lognormal turbulent atmospheric channel are considered. It is found that the advantages of the technique in the pulsed/digital system are similar to those obtained in the cw/analog system. Computer generated error probability curves as a function of the input signal-to-noise ratio are presented for a variety of binary receiver parameters and configurations and for various levels of atmospheric turbulence. Orthogonal and nonorthogonal signaling schemes, as well as dependent and independent fading, are considered. When Doppler information is poor, performance is generally superior to that of the conventional heterodyne system.[[booktype]]紙

    Optimizing Scrubbing by Netlist Analysis for FPGA Configuration Bit Classification and Floorplanning

    Existing scrubbing techniques for SEU mitigation on FPGAs do not guarantee an error-free operation after SEU recovering if the affected configuration bits do belong to feedback loops of the implemented circuits. In this paper, we a) provide a netlist-based circuit analysis technique to distinguish so-called critical configuration bits from essential bits in order to identify configuration bits which will need also state-restoring actions after a recovered SEU and which not. Furthermore, b) an alternative classification approach using fault injection is developed in order to compare both classification techniques. Moreover, c) we will propose a floorplanning approach for reducing the effective number of scrubbed frames and d), experimental results will give evidence that our optimization methodology not only allows to detect errors earlier but also to minimize the Mean-Time-To-Repair (MTTR) of a circuit considerably. In particular, we show that by using our approach, the MTTR for datapath-intensive circuits can be reduced by up to 48.5% in comparison to standard approaches

    The history of heterodyne detection is reviewed from the radiowave to the optical regions of the electromagnetic spectrum with emphasion the submillimeter/far infrared. The transition from electric field to photon absorption detection in a simple system is investigated. The response of an isolated two level detector to a coherent source of incident radiation is calculated for both heterodyne and video detection. When the processes of photon absorption and photon emission cannot be distinguished, the relative detected power at double- and sum-frequencies is found to be multiplied by a coefficient, which is less than or equal to unity, and which depends on the incident photon energy and on the effective temperature of the system

    We present a system for the linguistic exploration and analysis of lexical cohesion in English texts. Using an electronic thesaurus-like resource, Princeton WordNet, and the Brown Corpus of English, we have implemented a process of annotating text with lexical chains and a graphical user interface for inspection of the annotated text. We describe the system and report on some sample linguistic analyses carried out using the combined thesaurus-corpus resource

    Multiresolution wavelet analysis of heartbeat intervals discriminates healthy patients from those with cardiac pathology

    We applied multiresolution wavelet analysis to the sequence of times between human heartbeats (R-R intervals) and have found a scale window, between 16 and 32 heartbeats, over which the widths of the R-R wavelet coefficients fall into disjoint sets for normal and heart-failure patients. This has enabled us to correctly classify every patient in a standard data set as either belonging to the heart-failure or normal group with 100% accuracy, thereby providing a clinically significant measure of the presence of heart-failure from the R-R intervals alone. Comparison is made with previous approaches, which have provided only statistically significant measures.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev. Letter
