    NOTATIONAL ANALYSIS OF INTERNATIONAL BADMINTON COMPETITIONS

    Notational analysis of competitions is a widely used method for observing the playing patterns of many sports. An experiment was carried out to determine the playing tactics adopted by athletes in international badminton competitions. A total of 10 major competitions were recorded and the data was processed using a generic notational analysis software. The types of techniques used, the success and failure rates of the various shots were computed and compared using statistical methods of analysis. The results showed that the top three most popular shots used were Lift, Net and Clear. It was also found' that there were significant differences among the percentage of shots used in the three court areas as well, as the type of shots used by males and females

    Heterozygous mis-sense mutations in Prkcb as a critical determinant of anti-polysaccharide antibody formation

    To identify rate-limiting steps in T cell-independent type 2 (TI-2) antibody production against polysaccharide antigens, we performed a genome-wide screen by immunizing several hundred pedigrees of C57BL/6 mice segregating ENU-induced mis-sense mutations. Two independent mutations, Tilcara and Untied, were isolated that semi-dominantly diminished antibody against polysaccharide but not protein antigens. Both mutations resulted from single amino acid substitutions within the kinase domain of Protein Kinase C Beta (PKCĪ²). In Tilcara, a Ser552>Pro mutation occurred in helix G, in close proximity to a docking site for the inhibitory N-terminal pseudosubstrate domain of the enzyme, resulting in almost complete loss of active, autophosphorylated PKCĪ²I whereas the amount of alternatively spliced PKCĪ²II protein was not markedly reduced. Circulating B cell subsets were normal and acute responses to BCR-stimulation such as CD25 induction and initiation of DNA synthesis were only measurably diminished in Tilcara homozygotes, whereas the fraction of cells that had divided multiple times was decreased to an intermediate degree in heterozygotes. These results, coupled with evidence of numerous mis-sense PRKCB mutations in the human genome, identify Prkcb as a genetically sensitive step likely to contribute substantially to population variability in anti-polysaccharide antibody levels

    Qualitative tools for golf motion analysis like video and graphical overlay have provided competitive golfers in Singapore feedback on their swing. The analysis of this information tends to be subjective due to a lack of reliable quantifiable kinematics information. The authors applied the methods perlormed by Mc Laughlin and Best [1994], Robinson [1994] and Miura and Nauro [1998] on two professional players and six national age group players. Differences were found in how the two groups of players swing, in particular their setup and translation of their Center of Mass (COM) at Middle of Backswing (MBS) and Ball Impact Frame (BIF). Angle displacement of the shoulder-hip axis was studied and found to be pertinent to the kinetic link analysis. This parameter could serve as an intermediary for quantitative and qualitative analysis

    Real-time information processing of environmental sensor network data using Bayesian Gaussian processes

    In this article, we consider the problem faced by a sensor network operator who must infer, in real time, the value of some environmental parameter that is being monitored at discrete points in space and time by a sensor network. We describe a powerful and generic approach built upon an efficient multi-output Gaussian process that facilitates this information acquisition and processing. Our algorithm allows effective inference even with minimal domain knowledge, and we further introduce a formulation of Bayesian Monte Carlo to permit the principled management of the hyperparameters introduced by our flexible models. We demonstrate how our methods can be applied in cases where the data is delayed, intermittently missing, censored, and/or correlated. We validate our approach using data collected from three networks of weather sensors and show that it yields better inference performance than both conventional independent Gaussian processes and the Kalman filter. Finally, we show that our formalism efficiently reuses previous computations by following an online update procedure as new data sequentially arrives, and that this results in a four-fold increase in computational speed in the largest cases considered

    Decay and coherence of two-photon excited yellow ortho-excitons in Cu2O

    Photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy has revealed a novel, highly efficient two-photon excitation method to produce a cold, uniformly distributed high density excitonic gas in bulk cuprous oxide. A study of the time evolution of the density, temperature and chemical potential of the exciton gas shows that the so called quantum saturation effect that prevents Bose-Einstein condensation of the ortho-exciton gas originates from an unfavorable ratio between the cooling and recombination rates. Oscillations observed in the temporal decay of the ortho-excitonic luminescence intensity are discussed in terms of polaritonic beating. We present the semiclassical description of polaritonic oscillations in linear and non-linear optical processes.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figure

    KINEROS2 application for land use/cover change impact analysis at the Hulu Langat Basin, Malaysia

    The impacts of land use/cover changes (LUCC) on a developed basin in Malaysia were evaluated. Three storm events in different intensities and durations were required for KINEROS2 (K2) calibration and LUCC impact analysis. K2 validation was performed using three other rainfall events. Calibration results showed excellent and very good fittings for runoff and sediment simulations based on the aggregated measure. Validation results demonstrated that the K2 is reliable for runoff modelling, while K2 application for sediment simulation was only valid for the period 1984-1997. LUCC impacts analysis revealed that direct runoff and sediment discharge increased with the progress of urban development and unmanaged agricultural activities. These observations were supported by the NDVI, landscape and hydrological trend analyses

    Mechanical signatures of microbial biofilms in micropillar-embedded growth chambers

    Biofilms are surface-attached communities of microorganisms embedded in an extracellular matrix and are essential for the cycling of organic matter in natural and engineered environments. They are also the leading cause of many infections, for example, those associated with chronic wounds and implanted medical devices. The extracellular matrix is a key biofilm component that determines its architecture and defines its physical properties. Herein, we used growth chambers embedded with micropillars to study the net mechanical forces (differential pressure) exerted during biofilm formation in situ. Pressure from the biofilm is transferred to the micropillars via the extracellular matrix, and reduction of major matrix components decreases the magnitude of micropillar deflections. The spatial arrangement of micropillar deflections caused by pressure differences in the different biofilm strains may potentially be used as mechanical signatures for biofilm characterization. Hence, we submit that micropillar-embedded growth chambers provide insights into the mechanical properties and dynamics of the biofilm and its matrix.Singapore.     Characterisation of a highly potent and near pan-neutralising anti-HIV monoclonal antibody expressed in tobacco plants

    Background HIV remains one of the most important health issues worldwide, with almost 40 million people living with HIV. Although patients develop antibodies against the virus, its high mutation rate allows evasion of immune responses. Some patients, however, produce antibodies that are able to bind to, and neutralise different strains of HIV. One such ā€˜broadly neutralisingā€™ antibody is ā€˜N6ā€™. Identified in 2016, N6 can neutralise 98% of HIV-1 isolates with a median IC50 of 0.066 Āµg/mL. This neutralisation breadth makes N6 a very promising therapeutic candidate. Results N6 was expressed in a glycoengineered line of N. benthamiana plants (pN6) and compared to the mammalian cell-expressed equivalent (mN6). Expression at 49 mg/kg (fresh leaf tissue) was achieved in plants, although extraction and purification are more challenging than for most plant-expressed antibodies. N-glycoanalysis demonstrated the absence of xylosylation and a reduction in Ī±(1,3)-fucosylation that are typically found in plant glycoproteins. The N6 light chain contains a potential N-glycosylation site, which was modified and displayed more Ī±(1,3)-fucose than the heavy chain. The binding kinetics of pN6 and mN6, measured by surface plasmon resonance, were similar for HIV gp120. pN6 had a tenfold higher affinity for FcĪ³RIIIa, which was reflected in an antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity assay, where pN6 induced a more potent response from effector cells than that of mN6. pN6 demonstrated the same potency and breadth of neutralisation as mN6, against a panel of HIV strains. Conclusions The successful expression of N6 in tobacco supports the prospect of developing a low-cost, low-tech production platform for a monoclonal antibody cocktail to control HIV in low-to middle income countries
