Deconfinement on R2×SL1×Sβ1\mathbb R^2\times S^1_L\times S^1_{\beta} for all gauge groups and duality to double Coulomb Gas

I study finite-temperature N=1\mathcal N=1 super Yang-Mills for any gauge group G=AN,BN,CN,DN,E6,7,8,F4,G2G=A_N, B_N, C_N, D_N, E_{6,7,8},F_4,G_2, compactified from four dimensions on a torus, R2×SL1×Sβ1\mathbb R^2\times S^1_L\times S^1_{\beta}. I examine in particular the low temperature regime L≪β=1/TL\ll\beta=1/T, where LL is the length of the spatial circle with periodic boundary conditions and with anti-periodic boundary conditions for the adjoint gauginos along the thermal cycle Sβ1S^1_{\beta}. For small such LL we are in a regime were semiclassical calculations can be performed and a transition occurs at TcT_c much smaller than 1/NL1/NL. The transition is mediated by the competition between non-perturbative objects including 'exotic' topological molecules: neutral and magnetic bions composed of BPS and KK monopole constituents, with r=rank(G)r=rank(G) different charges in the co-root lattice of the gauge group GG, and the perturbative electrically charged W-bosons (along with their wino superpartners). I determine a duality to a double Coulomb gas of neutral and magnetic bions of different charges of their constituent monopole-instantons, and W-bosons of both scalar and electric charges. Aharanov-Bohm interactions exist between magnetic bions and W-bosons, and scalar charges of W-bosons and neutral bions attract like charges, as opposed to the magnetic and electric charges where like charges repel. It is hoped in the future that lattice studies of this Coulomb gas can be done as in [1] for all gauge groups. It is hoped that a dual lattice 'affine' XY model with symmetry breaking perturbations can also be found in future studies of general gauge group as done in [1] for SU(2)SU(2).Comment: 40 pages, 0 figure

A Void to Fill: Recognizing a Lack of Diversity in the High School Social Studies Curriculum

This action research project analyzed the current perceptions of diversity within the high school history curriculum at a small, predominantly white school district in northwest Indiana. Sixty-seven students participated on two separate days for this project. On the first day, a survey was distributed in which students provided anonymous, biographical information about themselves. Using a Likert scale, students also indicated their responses to five questions pertaining to their value on diversity and their thoughts on its inclusion in the current curriculum. On the following day, students were asked to jot down as many important historical figures in which they could recall from their previous lessons. These would later be analyzed to assess the demographics of all historical persons submitted by students. My results suggested that most students believed they had encountered an adequate amount of diversity in their history curriculum. This perception was not accurately reflected in the students’ lists of historical persons they remembered studying throughout the year. The results from this study indicate that students are vastly unaware of the lack of diversity presented in their high school social studies curriculum

An Expression of Spirituality: Clothing, Skin, and Bodies in Xul Solar’s Early Figure Paintings (1915-1926)

The Argentinian artist Xul Solar traveled Europe from 1912-1924, where he devoured knowledge from numerous sources, infusing his artwork with his personal spiritual beliefs along the way. An examination of the materiality of the subject matter, such as the clothing and figuration of the characters, in these early works allows for a deeper understanding of the development and meaning of the artist’s vision

Interspersing additional, brief items to influence the choice behavior of students with behavioral and emotional disabilities to complete grammar assignments

    Get PDF
Students with emotional and behavioral disabilities often exhibit inappropriate behaviors, and many also experience problems related to academic skill development and achievement. Academic skill deficits and inappropriate behaviors may be related. Students who experience academic difficulties may be more likely than their peers to engage in inappropriate behaviors to escape or avoid academic demands. Furthermore, students who engage in inappropriate behaviors are choosing not to engage in academic activities, which may serve to create or exacerbate academic achievement or skill deficits. The current study attempts to extend research suggesting that interspersing relatively brief items throughout an assignment, therefore increasing item completion rate, may increase the probability of students choosing to work on that assigmnent without compromising the accuracy and educational significance of the assigmnent. Thirty-two students identified as having emotional disturbance were each exposed to two grammar assignments. A control assignment contained a number of paragraphs that students were required to copy and punctuate. An experimental assignment was designed to be equivalent, but also contained additional, brief paragraphs interspersed throughout the assigmnent. Students worked on each assignment for 15 minutes and then ranked the assignments with regard to time, effort, and difficulty. Additionally, students were asked to choose either a control or interspersal assignment to complete for homework

The Relationship of Job Satisfaction and the Retention of Head Nurses

Nursing turnover is a chronic problem for nursing and hospital administration. Nursing turnover consumes a major portion of nonessential nursing costs. The effects of nursing turnover is compounded when it involves the head nurse. Nursing administration must identify the causes of this turnover and develop strategies to prevent it. The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship exists between job satisfaction and the intent to remain in a position. Head nurses from fifty (50) randomly selected acute care medical surgical facilities in Georgia were surveyed. one hundred and eight (108) head nurses from thirty (30) hospitals responded. Participants were asked to rank the five factors out of eleven identified factors they perceived as contributing most to job satisfaction. In addition they were asked to rate their current level of satisfaction with all of the identified factors. Respondents were also asked their intent to remain in their current position for the next five years. Participants ranked Standards of Patient Care (28%), Level of Administrative Support (19.6%), Pay/Benefits (15.9%), Ability to Function Autonomously (12.9%), and Scheduling: Says Off, Shifts, Etc. (7.5%) as the top five factors. There were moderate relationships between overall job satisfaction and intent to remain (r=.34) and between the top five factors and intent to remain. Job satisfaction of nurses may not be determined by measures of tangible factors, such as pay, but rather intangible factors such as values and commitments. Perhaps factors which affect satisfaction or dissatisfaction of nurses are not those traditionally identified in job satisfaction surveys, but are instead more value-based. Further research regarding values and needs and how the achievement of these affect the individual\u27s job satisfaction should be considered. Furthermore whether there is a relationship between retention and the meeting of these needs and values should also be investigated

Authenticity and animal welfare: understanding and ameliorating the suffering of dairy cows and their calves

2016 Spring.Includes bibliographical references. As Bernard Rollin discusses throughout his body of work, animals have interests and unique teloi as well as the capacity to feel pain and suffer emotionally. I argue that we must confront the ways in which we contribute to the suffering of dairy cows and their calves in particular, for their lives constitute a paradigmatic denial of an animal’s telos. Martin Heidegger’s notion of everydayness and his concept of authenticity—and especially Charles B. Guignon’s interpretations of them—allow us to understand and come to terms with our own everyday contribution to the reprehensible practices surrounding dairy production. That is, Heidegger’s understanding of Being allows us to see that we are likely contributors to the perpetuation of dairy cow and calf suffering. The concept of authenticity also acts as a tool that allows us insight into describing and prescribing personal commitments that entail the amelioration of these animals’ suffering. The goal is to individually strive to improve animal welfare in the dairy industry, which entails taking responsibility for and altering our actions and choices; otherwise, to avoid doing so is culpable—a notion akin to Nancy Williams’s argument that we are affectively ignorant of our role in animal mistreatment. Finally, utilizing authenticity as a guide also allows us to look to history, idols, and exemplars for moral guidance
