    Nano-Scale Strain-Induced Giant Pseudo-Magnetic Fields and Charging Effects in CVD-Grown Graphene on Copper

    Scanning tunneling microscopic and spectroscopic (STM/STS) studies of graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on copper reveal that the monolayer carbon structures remaining on copper are strongly strained and rippled, with different regions exhibiting different lattice structures and local electronic density of states (LDOS). The large and non-uniform strain induces pseudo-magnetic field up to ∌ 50 Tesla, as manifested by the integer and fractional pseudo-magnetic field quantum Hall effects (IQHE and FQHE) in the LDOS of graphene. Additionally, ridges appear along the boundaries of different lattice structures, which exhibit excess charging effects. For graphene transferred from copper to SiO_2 substrates after the CVD growth, the average strain and the corresponding charging effects and pseudo-magnetic fields become much reduced. These findings suggest the feasibility of strain-engineering of graphene-based nano-electronics

    Knowledge and perceptions of final year nursing students regarding antimicrobials, antimicrobial resistance, and antimicrobial stewardship : findings and implications to reduce resistance

    Abstract: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is increasingly seen as the next pandemic in view of high morbidity and mortality rates, with Sub-Saharan Africa currently having the highest mortality rates driven by high rates of inappropriate prescribing in ambulatory care. In South Africa, nurses typically provide a range of services, including prescribing, in public ambulatory care clinics. However, little is currently known about the perception of final year nursing students regarding antibiotic use, AMR, and anti-microbial stewardship (AMS). Consequently, we sought to address this important evidence gap. A quantitative descriptive study using a self-administered online questionnaire via Google Forms was undertaken among six universities offering a Baccalaureus of Nursing. Knowledge on the classes of antibiotics, organisms covered, and mechanism of action was lacking. The sample size to achieve a confidence interval of 95% with a 5% error margin was 174, increased to 200 to compensate for possible attrition. Only 15.3% of nurses knew ceftazidime is not a 4th generation cephalosporin and only 16.1% knew clavulanic acid does not decrease inflammation at the site of infection. In addition, only 58.9% and 67.7% agreed that the prescribing of broad-spectrum antibiotics and poor infection control respectively increases AMR. AMS was also not a well-known concept among final year nurses. The lack of knowledge regarding antibiotics, AMR and AMS, among final year nurses can have important repercussions in practice once qualified. Consequently, this information gap needs to be urgently ad-dressed going forward with updated curricula and post-qualification educational activities to reduce AMR in South Africa

    A Unique 100 Meter Underwater Survey Method Documents Changes in Abundance, Richness, and Community Structure of HawaiÊči Reef Fishes

    Hawaiâ€Či coral reefs are essential ecosystems providing resources in the form of food and recreation as well as stabilizing nearshore biodiversity. The Seattle Aquarium has exhibited Hawaiâ€Či reef fishes and corals since the mid-1980s to educate guests about these critical ecosystems. In 2009, and in collaboration with Hawaiâ€Či’s Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) and Washington State University, the aquarium expanded its conservation work in Hawaiâ€Či through annual surveying of eight reefs along the west coast of Hawaiâ€Či via SCUBA-based diver operated video (DOV). Five of the sites are in areas partially closed to most fishing while three sites are in areas partially open to most fishing. 100-meter DOV surveys took place a meter above a horizontal or vertical reef, and survey locations were marked with GPS and fixed underwater markings to enable annual surveys to occur in the same locations. Counts of fish species were subsequently made from the archived video. Over the 11 year dataset we documented increased total abundance at all sites and periods of increasing and decreasing species richness. Multivariate analyses comparing fish community structure before (2009-2012) and after an anomalous warm-water event (2013-2019) documented a persistent shift in community structure. This coincides with a documented marine heat wave in Hawaiâ€Či and associated coral bleaching events between 2013-2016. These results suggest that our long-term monitoring program captured a phase shift in community structure associated with changing environmental conditions. These persistent shifts may thus indicate hysteresis at relatively short temporal scales, and ongoing monitoring is required to observe whether the systems shift back to the pre-2013 community structure. As coral reef ecosystems face a multitude of stressors from warming waters to marine pollution, long-term monitoring programs are essential to illuminate trends that may inform conservation and management strategies to preserve these imperiled ecosystems

    Introductory programming: a systematic literature review

    As computing becomes a mainstream discipline embedded in the school curriculum and acts as an enabler for an increasing range of academic disciplines in higher education, the literature on introductory programming is growing. Although there have been several reviews that focus on specific aspects of introductory programming, there has been no broad overview of the literature exploring recent trends across the breadth of introductory programming. This paper is the report of an ITiCSE working group that conducted a systematic review in order to gain an overview of the introductory programming literature. Partitioning the literature into papers addressing the student, teaching, the curriculum, and assessment, we explore trends, highlight advances in knowledge over the past 15 years, and indicate possible directions for future research

    The Mid-infrared Instrument for JWST and Its In-flight Performance

    The Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) extends the reach of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to 28.5 ÎŒm. It provides subarcsecond-resolution imaging, high sensitivity coronagraphy, and spectroscopy at resolutions of λ/Δλ ∌ 100-3500, with the high-resolution mode employing an integral field unit to provide spatial data cubes. The resulting broad suite of capabilities will enable huge advances in studies over this wavelength range. This overview describes the history of acquiring this capability for JWST. It discusses the basic attributes of the instrument optics, the detector arrays, and the cryocooler that keeps everything at approximately 7 K. It gives a short description of the data pipeline and of the instrument performance demonstrated during JWST commissioning. The bottom line is that the telescope and MIRI are both operating to the standards set by pre-launch predictions, and all of the MIRI capabilities are operating at, or even a bit better than, the level that had been expected. The paper is also designed to act as a roadmap to more detailed papers on different aspects of MIRI
