    The distributed assembly permutation flowshop scheduling problem

    Nowadays, improving the management of complex supply chains is a key to become competitive in the twenty-first century global market. Supply chains are composed of multi-plant facilities that must be coordinated and synchronised to cut waste and lead times. This paper proposes a Distributed Assembly Permutation Flowshop Scheduling Problem (DAPFSP) with two stages to model and study complex supply chains. This problem is a generalisation of the Distributed Permutation Flowshop Scheduling Problem (DPFSP). The first stage of the DAPFSP is composed of f identical production factories. Each one is a flowshop that produces jobs to be assembled into final products in a second assembly stage. The objective is to minimise the makespan. We present first a Mixed Integer Linear Programming model (MILP). Three constructive algorithms are proposed. Finally, a Variable Neighbourhood Descent (VND) algorithm has been designed and tested by a comprehensive ANOVA statistical analysis.     Quantitative Evaluation of Chinese Herb Medicine in the Treatment of Sialorrhea and Frequent Nighttime Urination in Patients with Parkinson’s Disease

    Aims. To evaluate the efficacy of Lian-Se formula (LSF), one Chinese herb formulation for treating sialorrhea and frequent overnight urination in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Methods. 96 PD patients suffering from sialorrhea and/or frequent nighttime urination were divided into two groups: an LSF group (n = 48) treated with LSF for 6 weeks and a placebo group (n = 48) treated with a placebo formula whose appearance and taste were the same as LSF for 6 weeks. All patients were treated by standard antiparkinsonism medicine according to the PD guideline of China. The changes of the quantity of saliva (QS) (mL), frequency of nighttime urination (FNU) and early sleep activity (ESA), and nocturnal activity (NA) by analyzing actigraphic records as the primary results and the total score of unified Parkinson’s disease rating scale (UPDRS) and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) as the secondary results were used to evaluate the clinical efficacy in both groups. Results. There were no significant differences in the baseline values of QS, FNU, NA, ESA, UPDRS total score, and ESS between the two groups. At the end of week 6, the QS, FNU, NA, and ESA in the LSF group showed superior results to those of the placebo group with no differences in the total UPDRS score between the two groups during the investigation. The ESS was significantly improved at the end of week 6 compared with the baseline and the placebo group. Laboratory test results indicated there were no side effects in either group. Conclusion. The findings of LSF treatment have clear clinical effects in patients with sialorrhea and frequent overnight urination. LSF thus appears to be a potential choice as an additional drug that can improve the sialorrhea and frequent overnight urination symptoms of PD patients

    InSpaceType: Reconsider Space Type in Indoor Monocular Depth Estimation

    Indoor monocular depth estimation has attracted increasing research interest. Most previous works have been focusing on methodology, primarily experimenting with NYU-Depth-V2 (NYUv2) Dataset, and only concentrated on the overall performance over the test set. However, little is known regarding robustness and generalization when it comes to applying monocular depth estimation methods to real-world scenarios where highly varying and diverse functional \textit{space types} are present such as library or kitchen. A study for performance breakdown into space types is essential to realize a pretrained model's performance variance. To facilitate our investigation for robustness and address limitations of previous works, we collect InSpaceType, a high-quality and high-resolution RGBD dataset for general indoor environments. We benchmark 11 recent methods on InSpaceType and find they severely suffer from performance imbalance concerning space types, which reveals their underlying bias. We extend our analysis to 4 other datasets, 3 mitigation approaches, and the ability to generalize to unseen space types. Our work marks the first in-depth investigation of performance imbalance across space types for indoor monocular depth estimation, drawing attention to potential safety concerns for model deployment without considering space types, and further shedding light on potential ways to improve robustness.     Split tolerance induced by orthotopic liver transplantation in MICE

    Spontaneous orthotopic liver allograft acceptance associated with microchimerism in mice induces tolerance to subsequent skin or heart transplants from the donor but not third-party animals. Despite in vivo hyporesponsiveness, in vitro MLC and CTL assays showed continuing antidonor reactivity. Cells isolated from recipients’ spleens and grafted livers, when tested in MLC and CTL assays, were antidonor reactive out to 3 months to the same degree as splenocytes obtained from either naive or presensitized (with skin or heart) mice. Nevertheless, passive transfer of splenocytes or liver lymphocytes from liver tolerant mice, but not naive or sensitized donor strain mice, were able to prolong skin graft survival significantly in naive irradiated recipients. By using a strain combination in which the donor but not the recipient expressed the stimulatory endogenous super-Ag (Mlsf), it was possible to determine whether super-Ag-reactive T cells bearing Vß5 and Vβll were deleted or anergic. Phenotypic analysis of cells isolated from recipients’ spleens and grafted livers (up to 90 days after transplant), when compared with naive animals, showed no significant difference in Vß5 and Vβll TCR expression. Additionally, when these isolated spleen cells were tested for antibody-mediated stimulation, both anti-Vß5 and Vβll TCR mAb led to marked proliferation of cells obtained from naive and liver-trans-planted recipients, but as expected, proliferation was very low in cells from naive donors. These results suggest that liver transplantation induces donor-specific tolerance in vivo, which may not be reflected in in vitro proliferative and cytotoxicity assays (split tolerance). Furthermore, this tolerance does not seem to be induced by clonal deletion or anergy of minor-lymphocyte-stimulating-antigen-reactive T cells in the recipients. © 1994 by Williams and Wilkins

    Photoluminescence from Bi5(GaCl4)3 molecular crystal

    Bi5(GaCl4)3 sample has been synthesized through the oxidation of Bi metal by gallium chloride (GaCl3) salt. Powder X-ray diffraction as well as micro-Raman scattering results revealed that, in addition to crystalline Bi5(GaCl4)3 in the product, amorphous phase containing [GaCl4]- and [Ga2Cl7]- units also exist. The thorough comparison of steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescent behaviors between Bi5(GaCl4)3 product and Bi5(AlCl4)3 crystal leads us to conclude that Bi53+ is the dominant emitter in the product, which gives rise to the ultrabroad emission ranging from 1 to 2.7 micrometer. Detailed quantum chemistry calculation helps us assign the observed excitations to some electronic transitions of Bi53+ polycation, especially at shorter wavelengths. It is believed that our work shown here not only is helpful to solve the confusions on the luminescent origin of bismuth in other material systems, but also serves to develop novel broadband tunable laser materials

    We use a systematic empirical analysis of the determinants of South-South (SS) and North-South (NS) foreign direct investment (FDI) as a canvas to explore how multinational enterprises’ (MNEs) location decisions are shaped by better acquaintance with a foreign market resulting from bilateral ties, experience of international expansion, and knowledge of how to deal with poor governance. We find that these various aspects of market familiarity, which can interact together, are important to explain and differentiate the location behaviors of South MNEs (S-MNEs) and North MNEs (N-MNEs) in developing countries

    Research progress and future prospects of antimicrobial modified polyetheretherketone (PEEK) for the treatment of bone infections

    Infection of the bone is a difficult problem in orthopedic diseases. The key and basis of the treatment of bone infection is the effective control of local infection, as well as the elimination of infection focus and dead cavities. The most commonly used approach utilized for the prevention and management of bone infection is the application of antibiotic bone cement. However, the incorporation of antibiotics into the cement matrix has been found to considerably compromise the mechanical characteristics of bone cement. Moreover, some investigations have indicated that the antibiotic release rate of antibiotic bone cement is relatively low. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and its composites have been considered to perfectly address the challenges above, according to its favorable biomechanical characteristics and diverse surface functionalizations. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the recent advancements in the antimicrobial modification of PEEK composites in the field of antibacterial therapy of bone infection.
