    Structural rRNA Characters Support Monophyly of Raptorial Limbs and Paraphyly of Limb Specialization in Water Fleas

    The evolutionary success of arthropods has been attributed partly to the diversity of their limb morphologies. Large morphological diversity and increased specialization are observed in water flea (Cladocera) limbs, but it is unclear whether the increased limb specialization in different cladoceran orders is the result of shared ancestry or parallel evolution. We inferred a robust among–order cladoceran phylogeny using small–subunit and large–subunit rRNA nuclear gene sequences, signature sequence regions, novel stem–loops and secondary structure morphometrics to assess the phylogenetic distribution of limb specialization. The sequence–based and structural rRNA morphometric phylogenies were congruent and suggested monophyly of orders with raptorial limbs, but paraphyly of orders with reduced numbers of specialized limbs. These results highlight the utility of complex molecular structural characters in resolving ancient rapid radiations

    Model evaluation of target product profiles of an infant vaccine against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in a developed country setting

    Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major cause of lower respiratory tract disease in children worldwide and is a significant cause of hospital admissions in young children in England. No RSV vaccine has been licensed but a number are under development. In this work, we present two structurally distinct mathematical models, parameterized using RSV data from the UK, which have been used to explore the effect of introducing an RSV paediatric vaccine to the National programme. We have explored different vaccine properties, and dosing regimens combined with a range of implementation strategies for RSV control. The results suggest that vaccine properties that confer indirect protection have the greatest effect in reducing the burden of disease in children under 5 years. The findings are reinforced by the concurrence of predictions from the two models with very different epidemiological structure. The approach described has general application in evaluating vaccine target product profiles

Cet article montre que le genre n’est pas une simple catégorie rassemblant des entités de style similaire, mais une pratique sociale actuelle de classification et de compartimentation. Dans un système capitaliste, il est nécessaire de rendre l’Autre commercialisable, notamment à des époques marquées par une modification des modèles de consommation. Tous ces facteurs participaient déjà à la construction du marché des « musiques du monde » dans les années 1980. Les festivals perpétuent et accentuent ce processus dans la mesure où ils contribuent au travail culturel de positionnement des musiques du monde (en termes de genre)

    BackgroundBiofuel use is one of many means of addressing global change caused by anthropogenic release of fossil fuel carbon dioxide into Earth's atmosphere. To make a meaningful reduction in fossil fuel use, bioethanol must be produced from the entire plant rather than only its starch or sugars. Enzymes produced by fungi constitute a significant percentage of the cost of bioethanol production from non-starch (i.e., lignocellulosic) components of energy crops and agricultural residues. We, and others, have reasoned that fungi that naturally deconstruct plant walls may provide the best enzymes for bioconversion of energy crops.ResultsPreviously, we have reported on the isolation of 106 fungi from decaying leaves of Miscanthus and sugarcane (Appl Environ Microbiol 77:5490-504, 2011). Here, we thoroughly analyze 30 of these fungi including those most often found on decaying leaves and stems of these plants, as well as four fungi chosen because they are well-studied for their plant cell wall deconstructing enzymes, for wood decay, or for genetic regulation of plant cell wall deconstruction. We extend our analysis to assess not only their ability over an 8-week period to bioconvert Miscanthus cell walls but also their ability to secrete total protein, to secrete enzymes with the activities of xylanases, exocellulases, endocellulases, and beta-glucosidases, and to remove specific parts of Miscanthus cell walls, that is, glucan, xylan, arabinan, and lignin.ConclusionThis study of fungi that bioconvert energy crops is significant because 30 fungi were studied, because the fungi were isolated from decaying energy grasses, because enzyme activity and removal of plant cell wall components were recorded in addition to biomass conversion, and because the study period was 2 months. Each of these factors make our study the most thorough to date, and we discovered fungi that are significantly superior on all counts to the most widely used, industrial bioconversion fungus, Trichoderma reesei. Many of the best fungi that we found are in taxonomic groups that have not been exploited for industrial bioconversion and the cultures are available from the Centraalbureau voor Schimmelcultures in Utrecht, Netherlands, for all to use

    The Reverse-Morals Clause: The Unique Way to Save Talent\u27s Reputation and Money in a New Era of Corporate Crimes and Scandals

    This article sails into the largely unchartered waters of reverse-morals clauses because, to our knowledge, there are no law review or law journal articles that substantially address this still nascent area of law.25 Similarly, our research has not revealed any state or federal cases involving reverse-morals clauses.26 Nor has an actual talent contract containing such a clause been publicly revealed, either in terms of language or the identification of the parties to such a clause,27 although reportedly an increasingly larger number of talent are now asking for reverse-morals clauses in the wake of the Enron fallout and other high-profile corporate wrongdoings that have left talent in some cases receiving as much negative press as the companies themselves. 28 These issues merit our attention because the morals clause and the cutting-edge reverse-morals clause are fast becoming the most heavily negotiated aspect of any sports or entertainment contract. 29 Although, paradoxically, there is little information on reverse-morals clauses themselves, there is no single subject (i.e., the morals clause and reverse-morals clause) of greater import for the sports lawyer or agent in today\u27s brightly lit sports environment. 30 This article closes that gap in the legal literature

    Reorganize your blogs: Supporting blog re-visitation with natural language processing and visualization

    Temporally-connected personal blogs contain voluminous textual content, presenting challenges in re-visiting and reflecting on experiences. Other data repositories have benefited from natural language processing (NLP) and interactive visualizations (VIS) to support exploration, but little is known about how these techniques could be used with blogs to present experiences and support multimodal interaction with blogs, particularly for authors. This paper presents the effect of reorganization—reorganizing the large blog set with NLP and presenting abstract topics with VIS—to support novel re-visitation experiences to blogs. The BlogCloud tool, a blog re-visitation tool that reorganizes blog paragraphs around user-searched keywords, implements reorganization and similarity-based content grouping. Through a public use session with bloggers who wrote about extended hikes, we observed the effect of NLP-based reorganization in delivering novel re-visitation experiences. Findings suggest that the re-presented topics provide new reflection materials and re-visitation paths, enabling interaction with symbolic items in memory
