INFORMAL SCIENCE LEARNING:INFLUENCES OF EXPLANATORY ELABORATION AND LEARNER CONTROL ON KNOWLEDGE ACQUISITION

The Cognitive Load and Active Processing learning theories offer seemingly conflicting implications to educators regarding the most effective way to present instructional materials. The apparent contradiction between these bodies of research was investigated in terms of a Region of Proximal Learning (RPL) framework. The results from Experiment 1 provide evidence that the RPL can successfully unify these separate areas of research and provide more useful guidance to educators. Experiment 2 examined how the affordance of Learner Control (LC), an inherent aspect of the Web, may interact with the Region of Proximal Learning. Results from this experiment provide evidence that individuals can utilize LC to adaptively select material of appropriate difficulty for their ability level. thesisResistance to bacterial pneumonia may be impaired by a pre-existing virus infection. It has been proposed that this is due to an effect the virus has on the phagocytic and cytopeptic capacities of the alveolar macrophages. Guinea pigs were exposed to influenza Al virus in a Tri-R airborne infection chamber. The alveolar and peritonea macrophages were harvested and allowed to attach to the flat surfact of Leighton tubes. These macrophages were then challenged with a suspension of Klebsiella pneumoniae for 2 hours. The macrophages were washed free of extracellular bacteria and antibiotics were added to prevent extracellular multiplication. Plate counts were made at various time intervals on disrupted macrophages to determine the number of viable intracellular bacteria remaining. The samples counted immediately after the 2 hour challenge were considered to represent phagocytosis and those counted at various times following removal of extracellular bacteria were considered to be indicators of either cytopepsrs or intracellular multiplication. In vivo virus exposed macrophages ingested the bacteria at a rate significantly greater (p <.05) than that of non-virus exposed, control macrophages. However, virus exposed macrophages exhibited significantly reduced cytopepsis (p <.01) as compared to controls. These effects were observed in both the alveolar and peritoneal macrophages. It seems that virus infection may reduce host resistance to pulmonary bacterial infection by interfering with intracellular digestion of the ingested bacteria

dissertationTwo standard tests for infectious mononucleosis (the Davidsohn differential and the ox cell hemolysin test) and ten slide tests Monotest (Wampole), Monospot (Ortho), Monosticon (Organon), Diagluto I. M. (Beckman), I. M. Kit (Micro. Res. Corp.), Mono-Diff (Wampole), Bacto-Hetrol (Difco), Monosticon Dri-Dot (Organon), Monophile (BDS) and Rythrotex (BMC) were evaluated as they were used in 50 laboratories within the state of Utah plus two referee laboratories outside the state. The state proficiency testing program for infectious mononucleosis was modified so that the desired evaluation survey data could be obtained. The sensitivity, specificity, reproducibility (within and between shipments) and percent agreement with target results were determined for each test. Factors which might have affected the test results were evaluated to determine which were correlated with good performance. These factors included: formal education of the technologist performing the test, professional affiliation of the technologist, technologist's experience, technologist's area of major interest, type of laboratory, size of laboratory, number of tests performed, use of the test (screen, confirm or both), technologist's experience with the test and procedural differences. Since there is a critical need for evaluation survey data in almost every area of clinical laboratory testing and since there are in existence numerous proficiency testing programs in these areas, it is felt that an enormous amount of valuable information could be relatively easily obtained by similar modifications of existing proficiency testing programs

The big data movement has been characterised by highly enthusiastic promotion, and caution has been in short supply. New data analytic techniques are beginning to be applied to the operational activities of government agencies and corporations. If projects are conducted in much the same carefree manner as research experiments, they will inevitably have negative impacts on the organisations conducting them, and on their employees, other organisations and other individuals. The limited literature on process management for data analytics has not yet got to grips with the risks involved.
