    An analysis of internal/external event ordering strategies for COTS distributed simulation

    Distributed simulation is a technique that is used to link together several models so that they can work together (or interoperate) as a single model. The High Level Architecture (HLA) (IEEE 1516.2000) is the de facto standard that defines the technology for this interoperation. The creation of a distributed simulation of models developed in COTS Simulation Packages (CSPs) is of interest. The motivation is to attempt to reduce lead times of simulation projects by reusing models that have already been developed. This paper discusses one of the issues involved in distributed simulation with CSPs. This is the issue of synchronising data sent between models with the simulation of a model by a CSP, the so-called external/internal event ordering problem.     We present a qualitative model of the Coulomb branch of the moduli space of low-energy effective N=2 SQCD with gauge group SU(3) and up to five flavours of massive matter. Overall, away from double cores, we find a situation broadly similar to the case with no matter, but with additional complexity due to the proliferation of extra BPS states.     Productivity and Labour Demand Effects of Inward and Outward FDI on UK Industry

    We relate the technological and factor price determinants of inward and outward FDI to its potential productivity and labour market effects on both host and home economies. This allows us to distinguish clearly between technology sourcing and technology exploiting FDI, and to identify FDI which is linked to labour cost differentials. We then empirically examine the effects of different types of FDI into and out of the United Kingdom on domestic (i.e. UK) productivity and on the demand for skilled and unskilled labour at the industry level. Inward investment into the UK comes overwhelmingly from sectors and countries which have a technological advantage over the corresponding UK sector. Outward FDI shows a quite different pattern, dominated by investment into foreign sectors which have lower unit labour costs than the UK. We find that different types of FDI have markedly different productivity and labour demand effects, which may in part explain the lack of consensus in the empirical literature on the effects of FDI. Our results also highlight the difficulty for policy makers of simultaneously improving employment and domestic productivity through FDI

    Development and initial validation of the determinants of physical activity questionnaire

    Background: Physical activity interventions are more likely to be effective if they target causal determinants of behaviour change. Targeting requires accurate identification of specific theoretical determinants of physical activity. Two studies were undertaken to develop and validate the Determinants of Physical Activity Questionnaire. Methods In Study 1, 832 male and female university staff and students were recruited from 49 universities across the UK and completed the 66-item measure, which is based on the Theoretical Domains Framework. Confirmatory factor analysis was undertaken on a calibration sample to generate the model, which resulted in a loss of 31 items. A validation sample was used to cross-validate the model. 20 new items were added and Study 2 tested the revised model in a sample of 466 male and female university students together with a physical activity measure. Results: The final model consisted of 11 factors and 34 items, and CFA produced a reasonable fit χ2 (472) = 852.3, p < .001, CFI = .933, SRMR = .105, RMSEA = .042 (CI = .037-.046), as well as generally acceptable levels of discriminant validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability. Eight subscales significantly differentiated between high and low exercisers, indicating that those who exercise less report more barriers for physical activity. Conclusions: A theoretically underpinned measure of determinants of physical activity has been developed with reasonable reliability and validity. Further work is required to test the measure amongst a more representative sample. This study provides an innovative approach to identifying potential barriers to physical activity. This approach illustrates a method for moving from diagnosing implementation difficulties to designing and evaluating interventions
