    Discovery of a filamentary synchrotron structure connected to the coherent magnetic field in the outer galaxy

    Using data from the Galactic Arecibo L-band Feed Array Continuum Transit Survey, we report the discovery of two previously unidentified, very compressed, thin, and straight polarized filaments approximately centered at Galactic coordinates, (l, b) = (182°. 5, − 4°. 0), which we call G182.5–4.0. Using data from the Isaac Newton Telescope Galactic Plane Survey, we also find straight, long, and extremely thin Hα filaments coincident with the radio emission. These filaments are positioned in projection at the edge of the Orion-Eridanus superbubble and we find evidence indicating that the filaments align with the coherent magnetic field of the outer Galaxy. We find a lower limit on the total radio flux at 1.4 GHz to be 0.7 ± 0.3 Jy with an average linearly polarized fraction of 40 %20 30 - +. We consider various scenarios that could explain the origin of these filaments, including a shell type supernova remnant (SNR), a bow shock nebula associated with a pulsar, or relic fragments from one or more supernova explosions in the adjacent superbubble, with a hybrid scenario being most likely

    À la suite de Jean-Marie Zemb, nous considérons  que les formes périphrastiques (P2 sein et-ou P2 haben) de l\u27allemand (le "double" parfait actif) sont des constructions attributives formées d\u27une base (l\u27auxiliaire) et d\u27un groupe participial venant la déterminer. Il est question dès lors d\u27un phénomène attributif dont il s\u27agit de situer le mécanisme – en voix endocentrique, moyenne, ou exocentrique –  et de comprendre le fonctionnement dans chacune des formes verbales actualisées : Sur quoi y a-t-il attribution ? De quoi y a-t-il attribution ? Ce sont des considérations sémantiques qui ont été mobilisées pour rendre compte des faits (l\u27entier, l\u27unique, le degré d\u27affectation du sujet), ainsi que la prise en compte de faits de langue diachroniques. L\u27explication "syntaxique" traditionnelle (avec ses catégories, verbe transitif, intransitif, impersonnel) a révélé son impuissance (un simple relevé d\u27un "état des lieux" faussé par les forces niveleuses de l\u27analogie.

    Changes in the trajectory of the radio jet in 0735+178?

    We present multi-epoch 8.4 and 43 GHz Very Long Baseline Array images of the BL Lac object 0735+178. The images confirm the presence of a twisted jet with two sharp apparent bends of 90^{\circ} within two milliarcseconds of the core, resembling a helix in projection. The observed twisted geometry could be the result of precession of the jet inlet, but is more likely produced by pressure gradients in the external medium through which the jet propagates. Quasi-stationary components are observed at the locations of the 90^{\circ} bends, possibly produced by differential Doppler boosting. Identification of components across epochs, since the earliest VLBI observations of this source in 1979.2, proves difficult due to the sometimes large time gaps between observations. One possible identification suggests the existence of superluminal components following non--ballistic trajectories with velocities up to 11.6±0.6h651c11.6\pm 0.6 h_{65}^{-1} c. However, in images obtained after mid-1995, components show a remarkable tendency to cluster near several jet positions, suggesting a different scenario in which components have remained nearly stationary in time at least since mid-1995. Comparison with the earlier published data, covering more than 19 years of observations, suggests a striking qualitative change in the jet trajectory sometime between mid-1992 and mid-1995, with the twisted jet structure with stationary components becoming apparent only at the later epochs. This would require a re-evaluation of the physical parameters estimated for 0735+178, such as the observing viewing angle, the plasma bulk Lorentz factor, and those deduced from these.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    On String Theory Duals of Lifshitz-like Fixed Points

    We present type IIB supergravity solutions which are expected to be dual to certain Lifshitz-like fixed points with anisotropic scale invariance. They are expected to describe a class of D3-D7 systems and their finite temperature generalizations are straightforward. We show that there exist solutions that interpolate between these anisotropic solutions in the IR and the standard AdS5 solutions in the UV. This predicts anisotropic RG flows from familiar isotropic fixed points to anisotropic ones. In our case, these RG flows are triggered by a non-zero theta-angle in Yang-Mills theories that linearly depends on one of the spatial coordinates. We study the perturbations around these backgrounds and discuss the possibility of instability. We also holographically compute their thermal entropies, viscosities, and entanglement entropies.Comment: 47 pages, 4 figure

Addition of Al-Ti-B grain refiner typically promotes β-AlFeSi formation. β-AlFeSi was observed with a flat, plate-like morphology with angular edges in the alloy with and without grain refiner, whereas α -AlFeSi was observed as "flower"-like morphology in the alloy with grain refiner. © 2013 The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM International

    Density functional study of Aun_n (n=2-20) clusters: lowest-energy structures and electronic properties

    We have investigated the lowest-energy structures and electronic properties of the Aun_n(n=2-20) clusters based on density functional theory (DFT) with local density approximation. The small Aun_n clusters adopt planar structures up to n=6. Tabular cage structures are preferred in the range of n=10-14 and a structural transition from tabular cage-like structure to compact near-spherical structure is found around n=15. The most stable configurations obtained for Au13_{13} and Au19_{19} clusters are amorphous instead of icosahedral or fcc-like, while the electronic density of states sensitively depend on the cluster geometry. Dramatic odd-even alternative behaviors are obtained in the relative stability, HOMO-LUMO gaps and ionization potentials of gold clusters. The size evolution of electronic properties is discussed and the theoretical ionization potentials of Aun_n clusters compare well with experiments.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure

    Einstein's "Zur Elektrodynamik..." (1905) Revisited, with Some Consequences

    Einstein, in his "Zur Elektrodynamik bewegter Korper", gave a physical (operational) meaning to "time" of a remote event in describing "motion" by introducing the concept of "synchronous stationary clocks located at different places". But with regard to "place" in describing motion, he assumed without analysis the concept of a system of co-ordinates. In the present paper, we propose a way of giving physical (operational) meaning to the concepts of "place" and "co-ordinate system", and show how the observer can define both the place and time of a remote event. Following Einstein, we consider another system "in uniform motion of translation relatively to the former". Without assuming "the properties of homogeneity which we attribute to space and time", we show that the definitions of space and time in the two systems are linearly related. We deduce some novel consequences of our approach regarding faster-than-light observers and particles, "one-way" and "two-way" velocities of light, symmetry, the "group property" of inertial reference frames, length contraction and time dilatation, and the "twin paradox". Finally, we point out a flaw in Einstein's argument in the "Electrodynamical Part" of his paper and show that the Lorentz force formula and Einstein's formula for transformation of field quantities are mutually consistent. We show that for faster-than-light bodies, a simple modification of Planck's formula for mass suffices.     Universal deformation rings for the symmetric group S_4

    Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2, and let W be the ring of infinite Witt vectors over k. Let S_4 denote the symmetric group on 4 letters. We determine the universal deformation ring R(S_4,V) for every kS_4-module V which has stable endomorphism ring k and show that R(S_4,V) is isomorphic to either k, or W[t]/(t^2,2t), or the group ring W[Z/2]. This gives a positive answer in this case to a question raised by the first author and Chinburg whether the universal deformation ring of a representation of a finite group with stable endomorphism ring k is always isomorphic to a subquotient ring of the group ring over W of a defect group of the modular block associated to the representation.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure

    Segmentation of Loops from Coronal EUV Images

    We present a procedure which extracts bright loop features from solar EUV images. In terms of image intensities, these features are elongated ridge-like intensity maxima. To discriminate the maxima, we need information about the spatial derivatives of the image intensity. Commonly, the derivative estimates are strongly affected by image noise. We therefore use a regularized estimation of the derivative which is then used to interpolate a discrete vector field of ridge points ``ridgels'' which are positioned on the ridge center and have the intrinsic orientation of the local ridge direction. A scheme is proposed to connect ridgels to smooth, spline-represented curves which fit the observed loops. Finally, a half-automated user interface allows one to merge or split, eliminate or select loop fits obtained form the above procedure. In this paper we apply our tool to one of the first EUV images observed by the SECCHI instrument onboard the recently launched STEREO spacecraft. We compare the extracted loops with projected field lines computed from almost-simultaneously-taken magnetograms measured by the SOHO/MDI Doppler imager. The field lines were calculated using a linear force-free field model. This comparison allows one to verify faint and spurious loop connections produced by our segmentation tool and it also helps to prove the quality of the magnetic-field model where well-identified loop structures comply with field-line projections.
