    Pulsed Laval nozzle study of the kinetics of OH with unsaturated hydrocarbons at very low temperatures

    The kinetics of reactions of the OH radical with ethene, ethyne (acetylene), propyne (methyl acetylene) and t-butyl-hydroperoxide were studied at temperatures of 69 and 86 K using laser flash-photolysis combined with laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy. A new pulsed Laval nozzle apparatus is used to provide the low-temperature thermalised environment at a single density of similar to 4 x 10(16) molecule cm(-3) in N-2. The density and temperature within the flow are determined using measurements of impact pressure and rotational populations from laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy of NO and OH. For ethene, rate coefficients were determined to be k(2) = (3.22 +/- 0.46) x 10(-11) and (2.12 +/- 0.12) x 10(-11) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1) at T = 69 and 86 K, respectively, in good agreement with a master-equation calculation utilising an ab initio surface recently calculated for this reaction by Cleary et al. (P. A. Cleary, M. T. Baeza Romero, M. A. Blitz, D. E. Heard, M. J. Pilling, P. W. Seakins and L. Wang, Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2006, 8, 5633-5642) For ethyne, no previous data exist below 210 K and a single measurement at 69 K was only able to provide an approximate upper limit for the rate coefficient of k(3) < 1 x 10(-12) cm(3) molecule(-1) s (-1), consistent with the presence of a small activation barrier of similar to 5 kJ mol (-1) between the reagents and the OH-C2H2 adduct. For propyne, there are no previous measurements below 253 K, and rate coefficients of k(4) = (5.08 +/- 0.65), (5.02 +/- 1.11) and (3.11 +/- 0.09) x 10(-12) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1) were obtained at T = 69, 86 and 299 K, indicating a much weaker temperature dependence than for ethene. The rate coefficient k(1) = (7.8 +/- 2.5) x 10(-11) cm(3) molecule(-1) s (-1) was obtained for the reaction of OH with t-butyl-hydroperoxide at T = 86 K. Studies of the reaction of OH with benzene and toluene yielded complex kinetic profiles of OH which did not allow the extraction of rate coefficients. Uncertainties are quoted at the 95% confidence limit and include systematic errors

    Space-Frequency Equalization for Broadband Single Carrier MIMO Systems

    In this paper, a frequency domain (FD) receiver architecture implemented using estimated channel parameters is derived for broadband single carrier modulations. Co-channel and inter-symbol interferences are compensated by a minimum mean squared error based integrated space-frequency-equalizer (SFE) using the estimated parameters. The integrated SFE in the FD consists of coupled FIR structures, that are jointly optimized by maximizing the desired signal to interference plus noise ratio. We develop analytical expressions and present simulation results for the integrated SFE. Simulation results demonstrate that excellent receiver performance is achieved even for channels with large ISI spans. The proposed SC-SFE outperforms previous layered space frequency (LSF) receivers with imperfect channel knowledge. Further, the parallel receiver architecture yields equal diversity gains to all data streams without the error propagation that is common to most LSF schemes

    Improved Information Outage Rate in Certain MIMO Systems

    We propose a simple class of encoding/decoding techniques which can be used to improve the information outage rate of certain multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Gains in outage rate can be achieved at low to moderate signal to noise ratios in MIMO systems which have fewer receive antennas than transmit antennas. This performance improvement is due to extra ``virtual'' receive antennas which are created with low complexity signal processing. A simple space-time block code system using virtual receive antennas is also investigated

    Two-user Cooperative Transmission Using Superposition Modulation and Soft Information Combining

    We propose a cooperative transmission scheme for two users with one common relay using superposition modulation. It uses distributed Turbo codes (DTCs) for each user. The relay always decodes, then interleaves and re-encodes the decoded data. A new packet is formed by combining the re-encoded packets from both users using superposition modulation. This packet is forwarded to the destination with the average receive SNRs of each user. The destination uses the cooperative Turbo decoder of [1] to improve performance. Simulation results show the proposed scheme outperforms XOR based schemes and is simple to implement

    Briefing forecasts prepared for the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) are used to estimate changes in the design of US monetary policy and in the implied policy target for inflation from 1970 through 1997. Both estimated policy rate responses and FOMC transcripts are consistent with intermediate targeting of monetary aggregates throughout the Great Inflation of the 1970s. The unpublished FOMC targets for M1 growth are tabulated. Empirical results support an effective inflation target of roughly 7% in the 1970s and 3% thereafter. A notable difference in the 1970s monetary policies of the US and Germany is the absence of explicit public objectives for US long-run inflation

    We compute certain spinorial cohomology groups controlling possible supersymmetric deformations of eleven-dimensional supergravity up to order l3l^3 in the Planck length. At O(l){\cal O}(l) and O(l2){\cal O}(l^2) the spinorial cohomology groups are trivial and therefore the theory cannot be deformed supersymmetrically. At O(l3){\cal O}(l^3) the corresponding spinorial cohomology group is generated by a nontrivial element. On an eleven-dimensional manifold MM such that p1(M)≠0p_1(M)\neq 0, this element corresponds to a supersymmetric deformation of the theory, which can only be redefined away at the cost of shifting the quantization condition of the four-form field strength.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure. v2: references adde

    Interpolating Action for Strings and Membranes - a Study of Symmetries in the Constrained Hamiltonian Approach

    A master action for bosonic strings and membranes, interpolating between the Nambu--Goto and Polyakov formalisms, is discussed. The role of the gauge symmetries vis-\`{a}-vis reparametrization symmetries of the various actions is analyzed by a constrained Hamiltonian approach. This analysis reveals the difference between strings and higher branes, which is essentially tied to a degree of freedom count. The cosmological term for membranes follows naturally in this scheme.
