    Heat-transfer and pressure measurements on a simulated elevon deflected 30 deg near flight conditions at Mach 7

    Heat transfer rates and pressures were obtained on an elevon plate (deflected 30 deg) and a flat plate upstream of the elevon in an 8 foot high-temperature structures tunnel. The flight Reynolds number and flight total enthalpy for altitudes of 26.8 km and 28.7 km at Mach seven were duplicated. The heat transfer and pressure data were used to establish heating and pressure loads. The measured heating was compared with several theoretical predictions, and the closest agreement obtained with a Schultz-Grunow reference enthalpy method of calculation

    Identifying Compact Symmetric Objects in the Southern Sky

    We present results of multifrequency polarimetric VLBA observations of 20 compact radio sources. The observations represent the northern and southern extensions of a large survey undertaken to identify Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs) Observed in the Northern Sky (COINS). CSOs are young radio galaxies whose jet axes lie close to the plane of the sky, and whose appearance is therefore not dominated by relativistic beaming effects. The small linear sizes of CSOs make them valuable for studies of both the evolution of radio galaxies and testing unified schemes for active galactic nuclei (AGN). In this paper we report on observations made of 20 new CSO candidates discovered in the northern and southern extremities of the VLBA Calibrator Survey. We identify 4 new CSOs, and discard 12 core-jet sources. The remaining 4 sources remain candidates pending further investigation. We present continuum images at 5 GHz and 15 GHz and, where relevant, images of the polarized flux density and spectral index distributions for the 8 new CSOs and CSO candidates.Comment: accepted to Ap

    Theory of the Three Dimensional Quantum Hall Effect in Graphite

    We predict the existence of a three dimensional quantum Hall effect plateau in a graphite crystal subject to a magnetic field. The plateau has a Hall conductivity quantized at 4e21c0\frac{4e^2}{\hbar} \frac{1}{c_0} with c0c_0 the c-axis lattice constant. We analyze the three-dimensional Hofstadter problem of a realistic tight-binding Hamiltonian for graphite, find the gaps in the spectrum, and estimate the critical value of the magnetic field above which the Hall plateau appears. When the Fermi level is in the bulk Landau gap, Hall transport occurs through the appearance of chiral surface states. We estimate the magnetic field necessary for the appearance of the three dimensional quantum Hall Effect to be 15.415.4 T for electron carriers and 7.07.0 T for hole carriers.Comment: Several new references adde

    Simulations of the random barrier model show that ac currents at extreme disorder are carried almost entirely by the percolating cluster slightly above threshold; thus contradicting traditional theories contributions from isolated low-activation-energy clusters are negligible. The effective medium approximation in conjunction with the Alexander-Orbach conjecture leads to an excellent analytical fit to the universal ac conductivity with no nontrivial fitting parameters

    Evidence for Ordered Magnetic Fields in the Quasar Environment

    At a distance of 20 pc from the purported supermassive black hole powering quasars, temperatures and densities are inferred from optical observations to be ~10**4 K and ~10**4 cm**-3. Here we present Very Long Baseline Interferometry radio observations revealing organized magnetic fields on the parsec scale in the hot plasma surrounding the quasar OQ172 (1442+101). These magnetic fields rotate the plane of polarization of the radio emission coming from the core and inner jet of the quasar. The derived rotation measure (RM) is 40,000 rad m**-2 in the rest frame of the quasar. Only 10 mas (a projected distance of 68 pc) from the nucleus the jet absolute values of RM fall to less than 100 rad m**-2.Comment: in press at ApJ Letters, 12 page LaTeX document includes 4 postscript figure
