    Increasing rainwater yield in water sensitive cities using short-term rainfall forecasts

    Rainwater harvesting performance is examined in Brisbane and Sydney for three rainwater tank configurations comprising: 1) A conventional 5kL tank; 2) A 5kL tank with a fixed leaking compartment for baseflow (240 L/d); and 3) As with leaking but including a variable diversion compartment (480 L/day) controlled by short-term rainfall forecasts. This concept is referred to as adaptive rainwater diversion (ARD). Result show the ARD system achieves superior emulation of pre-urban runoff frequencies, runoff volumes and baseflows, while maintaining the household rainwater supply to within 90% of conventional systems, and also while producing an additional water resources of up to 60kL/hh/y. With these outcomes, the ARD system could potentially create an avenue to approach water sensitive cities in Eastern Australia

    Mathematical Modelling of Turning Delays in Swarm Robotics

    We investigate the effect of turning delays on the behaviour of groups of differential wheeled robots and show that the group-level behaviour can be described by a transport equation with a suitably incorporated delay. The results of our mathematical analysis are supported by numerical simulations and experiments with e-puck robots. The experimental quantity we compare to our revised model is the mean time for robots to find the target area in an unknown environment. The transport equation with delay better predicts the mean time to find the target than the standard transport equation without delay.Comment: Submitted to the IMA Journal of Applied Mathematic

    Valuing Access to our Public Lands: A Unique Public Good Pricing Experiment

    We report the findings of a unique nation-wide experiment to price access to our public lands. In 2004, the U.S. Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act mandated the creation of a new annual pass to cover all federal recreation sites that charge an entrance or access fee. Our task was to assist federal policymakers in determining an appropriate price for this new pass. Toward that end, we administered a contingent valuation phone survey to over 3700 households to estimate households willingness to pay (WTP) for the new pass at a variety of different prices. Our innovative experimental design allows us to estimate the degree of hypothetical bias in the sample and calibrate our WTP estimates to reflect actual purchasing decisions. In a sample of the general U.S. population most of whom have little experience with similar federal passes respondents tend to greatly exaggerate their WTP for the pass when contrasted with previous pass sales. A sample of recent pass purchasers, however, exhibits little bias.     Freshwater displacement effect on the Weddell Gyre carbon budget

This region also features large and highly variable freshwater fluxes due to seasonal sea ice, net precipitation, and glacial melt; however, the impact of these freshwater fluxes on the regional carbon cycle has not been fully appreciated. Using a novel budget analysis of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) mass in the Biogeochemical Southern Ocean State Estimate, we highlight two freshwater-driven transports. Where freshwater with minimal DIC enters the ocean, it displaces DIC-rich seawater outwards, driving a lateral transport of 75 ± 5 Tg DIC/year. Additionally, sea ice export requires a compensating import of seawater, which carries 48 ± 11 Tg DIC/year into the gyre. Though often overlooked, these freshwater displacement effects are of leading order in the Weddell Gyre carbon budget in the state estimate and in regrouped box-inversion estimates, with implications for evaluating basin-scale carbon transport.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Consumption of Whole Cottonseed by White-Tailed Deer and Nontarget Species

    Supplementing diets of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) with pelleted rations is an increasingly common practice aimed at increasing deer antler size on rangelands in Texas. Feed loss to consumption by various nontarget species (e.g., raccoons [Procyon lotor] and feral pigs [Sus scrofa]) raises both ecological and economic concerns. Whole cottonseed is a feedstuff that may afford a more targeted supplemental feeding effort. Accordingly, we determined: (1) consumption rates of whole cottonseed by feral pigs and raccoons in captivity; and (2) species visitation at feed sites and preference for whole cottonseed relative to whole corn under field conditions. For experiments 1 and 2, we trapped subadult feral pigs and raccoons (n = 16 for each) and randomly assigned them to 4 feed treatments. We weighed and took blood to assess gossypol levels from both pigs and raccoons every 2 weeks for 2 months. Pigs were adept at sorting cottonseed from their feed ration in the laboratory trial. Raccoons consumed cottonseed only under severe dietary stress (i.e., diets reduced to 60% of maintenance requirements). To supplement laboratory findings we used motion-triggered video camera systems to monitor species visitation and feeding behaviors in the field. Video surveillance (125 hours of recorded events) of feeders supported our observations from laboratory trials that cottonseed was unpalatable to feral pigs and raccoons, whereas white-tailed deer consumed cottonseed readily.
