    Influence of Bioactive Components of the Mediterranean Diet on Inflammation and Healthy Aging

    The Mediterranean diet is characterized by an increased consumption of fruits, vegetables, grains, and fish. Olive oil and herbs and spices are also essential components of this food regimen. Such a diet is associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, overall mortality, reduced incidence of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases, and reduced cognitive impairment. Some of the bioactive components that exert beneficial effects are ω-3 fatty acids, polyphenols, and alkaloids that have neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and gluco-regulating properties. These beneficial effects contribute to improved health including organ health and cognitive function. While the number of such bioactive plant constituents is numerous, this review will examine the role of specific bioactives and vitamins and assess the molecular mechanisms including the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory beneficial effects of the bioactive components in the Mediterranean diet

    Numerical and Experimental Investigation of Circulation in Short Cylinders

    In preparation for an experimental study of magnetorotational instability (MRI) in liquid metal, we explore Couette flows having height comparable to the gap between cylinders, centrifugally stable rotation, and high Reynolds number. Experiments in water are compared with numerical simulations. Simulations show that endcaps corotating with the outer cylinder drive a strong poloidal circulation that redistributes angular momentum. Predicted azimuthal flow profiles agree well with experimental measurements. Spin-down times scale with Reynolds number as expected for laminar Ekman circulation; extrapolation from two-dimensional simulations at Re3200Re\le 3200 agrees remarkably well with experiment at Re106Re\sim 10^6. This suggests that turbulence does not dominate the effective viscosity. Further detailed numerical studies reveal a strong radially inward flow near both endcaps. After turning vertically along the inner cylinder, these flows converge at the midplane and depart the boundary in a radial jet. To minimize this circulation in the MRI experiment, endcaps consisting of multiple, differentially rotating rings are proposed. Simulations predict that an adequate approximation to the ideal Couette profile can be obtained with a few rings

    MicroRNA Involvement in Immune Activation During Heart Failure

    Heart failure is one of the common end stages of cardiovascular diseases, the leading cause of death in developed countries. Molecular mechanisms underlying the development of heart failure remain elusive but there is a consistent observation of chronic immune activation and aberrant microRNA (miRNA) expression that is present in failing hearts. This review will focus on the interplay between the immune system and miRNAs as factors that play a role during the development of heart failure. Several studies have shown that heart failure patients can be characterized by a sustained innate immune activation. The role of inflammatory signaling is discussed and TLR4 signaling, IL-1β, TNFα and IL-6 expression appears to coincide with the development of heart failure. Furthermore, we describe the implication of the renin angiotensin aldosteron system in immunity and heart failure. In the past decade microRNAs (miRNAs), small non-coding RNAs that translationally repress protein synthesis by binding to partially complementary sequences of mRNA, have come to light as important regulators of several kinds of cardiovascular diseases including cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure. The involvement of differentially expressed miRNAs in the inflammation that occurs during the development of heart failure is still subject of investigation. Here, we summarize and comment on the first studies in this field and hypothesize on the putative involvement of certain miRNAs in heart failure. MicroRNAs have been shown to be critical regulators of cardiac function and inflammation. Future research will have to point out if dampening the immune response, and the miRNAs associated with it, during the development of heart failure is a therapeutically plausible route to follow

    The Increase in Circulating Levels of Pro-Inflammatory Chemokines, Cytokines, and Complement C5 in Canines with Impaired Kidney Function

    Chronic low-grade inflammation is a key contributor to the progression of kidney disease. The release of cytokines and other pro-inflammatory proteins may further contribute to detrimental kidney health by increasing interstitial edema and renal fibrosis. The aim of the present study was to investigate the inflammatory markers in canines who developed renal disease naturally and were diagnosed with renal disease either during life or following necropsy, as assessed by a veterinarian. RNA was isolated from canine blood obtained at necropsy and stored as bioarchived samples from ten canines with renal disease (9.6–14.7 yr) and ten controls (10.1–14.8 yr). At the time of death, the mean blood creatinine concentration and BUN were elevated in dogs with renal disease compared to control (both p 2 Profiler PCR Array for inflammation. There was a significant increase in C-C Motif Chemokine Ligand 16 (CCL16), C-X-C Motif Chemokine Ligand 5 (CXCL5), Interleukin 16 (IL-16), and Complement Component 5 (C5) (all p < 0.05 vs. con). In addition, there was also a statistically non-significant increase in 49 genes and a down-regulation in 35 genes from a panel of total 84 genes. Pro-inflammatory genes including CCL16, CXCL5, IL-16, and C5 can all contribute to renal inflammation and fibrosis through different signaling pathways and may lead to a progressive impairment of kidney function. Blockade of their activation may be important in ameliorating the initiation and/or the progression of renal disease

    Do women in major cities experience better health? A comparison of chronic conditions and their risk factors between women living in major cities and other cities in Indonesia

    Background: Inhabitants of rural areas can be tempted to migrate to urban areas for the type and range of facilities available. Although urban inhabitants may benefit from greater access to human and social services, living in a big city can also bring disadvantages to some residents due to changes in social and physical environments. Design: We analysed data from 4,208 women aged >15 years old participating in the fourth wave of the Indonesia Family Life Survey. Chronic condition risk factors – systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP), body mass index (BMI), and tobacco use – among women in four major cities in Indonesia (Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan, and Bandung) were compared against other cities. Fractional polynomial regression models were applied to examine the association between living in the major cities and SBP, DBP, BMI, and tobacco use. The models were also adjusted for age, education, employment status, migration status, ethnic groups, and religion. The patterns of SBP, DBP, and BMI were plotted and contrasted between groups of cities. Results: Chronic condition prevalence was higher for women in major cities than in contrasting cities (p<0.005). Living in major cities increased the risk of having higher SBP, DBP, BMI and being a current smoker. Chronic disease risk factors in major cities were evident from younger ages. Conclusions: Women residing in Indonesia’s major cities have a higher risk of developing chronic conditions, starting at younger ages. The findings highlight the challenges inherent in providing long-term healthcare with its associated cost within major Indonesian cities and the importance of chronic disease prevention programmes targeting women at an early age

    Older Australian women's use of dentists: a longitudinal analysis over 6 years

    Aim: To identify factors associated with dentist consultation by older Australian women. Methods: Participants from the older cohort of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health which originally involved 12 432 older women. Results: The percentage of women who consulted a dentist in the years 1999, 2002 and 2005 were 35%, 36% and 37%, respectively. Women were more likely to consult with a dentist if they lived in urban areas (RR = 1.26; 95% CI: 1.21, 1.32), were non-smokers (RR = 1.38; 95% CI: 1.21, 157), did not have diabetes (RR = 1.16; 95% CI: 1.08, 1.25), had better physical health (RR = 1.02 (95% CI: 1.01, 1.02). Women were less likely to consult with a dentist if they found it difficult to live on their income (RR = 0.90; 95% CI: 085, 0.95). Conclusion: Access to dentists, cost of consultations and poor health appear to be significant factors influencing visits to a dentist by older Australian women

    Exploring the implementation of poslansia, Indonesia's community-based health programme for older people

    AIM To explore the implementation of poslansia, a community-based integrated health service implemented across Indonesia to improve the health status of older people through health promotion and disease prevention. METHODS Data analysis of 307 poslansia surveyed in the 4th wave of Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS-4). We examined the services provided in the programme, resources and perceived problems. RESULTS The services provided by poslansia focused mostly on risk factor screening and treatment for minor illness, and less on health promotion activities. Lack of support from community health centres, no permanent place for holding poslansia and lack of participant interest in joining the programme were associated with fewer services provided in the programme (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION The findings indicate existing support from the community, community health centres and related institutions for poslansia is not adequate for optimal service function.
