    Get PDF
Tumors of the foot and ankle are rare, and the particular clinicopathologic features, therapeutic approach, and outcomes in this setting are not well established. From January 2000 to December 2010, 72 patients with primary musculoskeletal tumors of the foot and ankle, both benign and malignant, were treated at a single institution. Of the 72 patients, 56% were female. The median age was 52 years. Of the 72 tumors, 62 (86.11%) were located in the foot and 10 were located in the ankle; 63 (87.5%) were soft tissue tumors and 9 (12.5%) were bone tumors. Overall, 56 (78%) were benign tumors and 16 (22%) were malignant tumors. The most frequent soft tissue and bone diagnosis was giant cell tumor. The median follow-up period was 49 months. The vast majority of the tumors were located in the foot. Benign tumors were dominant, outnumbering malignant tumors by more than 3 to 1. The diversity of the histologic benign types was evident, with giant cell tumor, angiomyoma, and lipoma the most frequent. Regarding the malignant tumors, a clear male predominance was present, the median age was 45 years, and the most frequent tumor was synoviosarcoma. The 9-year overall and disease-free survival rate was 65% and 40%, respectively

Qualidade do Ar. Absent abdominal muscles, nephro-urologic abnormalities, and severe neurologic damage in an infant with 3 chromosomal duplications: A novel syndrome?

    Get PDF
Absent abdominal muscles, cryptorchidism, and hydroureteronephrosis are known to occur in the prune belly syndrome (PBS). We present a male with absent abdominal muscles, severe neurologic damage, with global developmental delay, hydroureteronephrosis, and cryptorchidism. The patient also had arthrogryposis multiplex congenital, low set ears, short neck, micrognathia, bilateral total ptosis, and bilateral clubfeet. Genetic testing (CGH array) revealed 3 novel duplications of unknown clinical significance at 7q11.23, 9q22.32 (PTCH 1 gene), and 12q21.32 (CEP 290 gene). Conclusion: We feel that our patient represents a novel entity, henceforth not described in the literature

    Wavelet entropy of stochastic processes

We compare two different definitions for the wavelet entropy associated to stochastic processes. The first one, the Normalized Total Wavelet Entropy (NTWS) family [Phys. Rev. E 57 (1998) 932; J. Neuroscience Method 105 (2001) 65; Physica A (2005) in press] and a second introduced by Tavares and Lucena [Physica A 357 (2005)~71]. In order to understand their advantages and disadvantages, exact results obtained for fractional Gaussian noise (-1<alpha< 1) and the fractional Brownian motion (1 < alpha < 3) are assessed. We find out that NTWS family performs better as a characterization method for these stochastic processes.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physica

Adding Evidence to the Role of NEUROG1 in Congenital Cranial Dysinnervation Disorders

Congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders (CCDDs) are a heterogeneous group of neurodevelopmental phenotypes caused by a primary disturbance of innervation due to deficient, absent, or misguided cranial nerves. Although some CCDDs genes are known, several clinical phenotypes and their aetiologies remain to be elucidated. We describe a 12-year-old boy with hypotonia, developmental delay, sensorineural hearing loss, and keratoconjunctivitis due to lack of corneal reflex. He had a long expressionless face, severe oromotor dysfunction, bilateral agenesis/severe hypoplasia of the VIII nerve with marked atresia of the internal auditory canals and cochlear labyrinth malformation. Trio-exome sequencing identified a homozygous loss of function variant in the NEUROG1 gene (NM_006161.2: c.202G > T, p.Glu68*). NEUROG1 is considered a causal candidate for CCDDs based on (i) the previous report of a patient with a homozygous gene deletion and developmental delay, deafness due to absent bilateral VIII nerves, and severe oromotor dysfunction; (ii) a second patient with a homozygous NEUROG1 missense variant and corneal opacity, absent corneal reflex and intellectual disability; and (iii) the knockout mouse model phenotype which highly resembles the disorder observed in humans. Our findings support the growing compelling evidence that loss of NEUROG1 leads to a very distinctive disorder of cranial nerves development.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Diethylenetriamine/diamines/copper (II) complexes [Cu(dien)(NN)]Br2: Synthesis, solvatochromism, thermal, electrochemistry, single crystal, Hirshfeld surface analysis and antibacterial activity

Two dicationic water soluble mixed triamine/diamine copper (II) complexes, of general formula [Cu(dien)NN]Br2(1–2) [dien = diethelenetriamine and NN is en = ethylenediamine or Me4en = N,N′,N,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine] were prepared under ultrasonic mode with a relatively high yield. These complexes were characterized by elemental microanalysis, UV visible IR spectroscopy, and thermal and electrochemical techniques. In addition, complex 2 structure was solved by X-ray single crystal and Hirshfeld surface analysis. The complex exhibits a distorted square pyramidal coordination environment around Cu(II) centre. The solvatochromism of the desired complexes was investigated in water and other suitable organic solvents. The results show that the Guttmann’s DN parameter values of the solvents have mainly contributed to the shift of the d–d absorption band towards the linear increase in the wavelength of the absorption maxima of the complexes. The complex 1 showed higher antibacterial activity against the studied microorganisms compared to complex 2. Both complexes revealed promising antibacterial activities. The authors would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the Deanship of Scientific Research at King Saud University for its funding of this Research group NO (RG-0257-1435-1436)

Retinal Neurodegeneration in Diabetic Patients Without Diabetic Retinopathy

PURPOSE: To compare the thickness of all retinal layers between a nondiabetic group and diabetic patients without diabetic retinopathy (DR). METHODS: Cross-sectional study, in which all subjects underwent an ophthalmic examination including optical coherence tomography. After automatic retinal segmentation, each retinal layer thickness (eight separate layers and overall thickness) was calculated in all nine Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) areas. The choroidal thickness (CT) also was measured at five locations. Generalized additive regression models were used to analyze the data. RESULTS: A total of 175 patients were recruited, 50 nondiabetic subjects and 125 diabetic patients without DR, stratified into three groups according to diabetes duration: group I (10 years, n = 31). Overall, groups I and III of diabetic patients had a decrease in the photoreceptor layer (PR) thickness, when compared with the nondiabetic subjects in six ETDRS areas (P < 0.0007). Patients with more recent diagnosis (group I) had thinner PR than those with moderate duration (group II). Interestingly, patients with longer known disease (group III) had the thinnest PR values. There were no overall differences in the remaining retinal parameters. CONCLUSIONS: Retinal thickness profile is not linear throughout disease duration. Even in the absence of funduscopic disease, PR layer in diabetic patients seems to differ from nondiabetic subjects, thus suggesting that some form of neurodegeneration may take place before clinical signs of vascular problems arise.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
