    Protein-losing enteropathy associated with Henoch-Schönlein purpura

    The gastrointestinal manifestations of Henoch-Schönlein purpura include abdominal pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, intussusception, and perforation. Protein-losing enteropathy is rarely associated with Henoch-Schönlein purpura. Two pediatric patients with Henoch-Schönlein purpura who developed protein-losing enteropathy are reported. Tc-99m human serum albumin scintigraphy is useful in the detection of protein-losing enteropathy

    A fully illustrated introduction to the archaeology of the Jomon period in Japan, this book explores the complex relationships between Jomon people and their rich natural environment. From the end of the last Ice Age 12,000 years ago to the appearance of rice agriculture around 400 BC, Jomon people subsisted by hunting, fishing and gathering; but abundant and predictable sources of wild food enabled Jomon people to live in large, relatively permanent settlements, and to develop an elaborate material culture. This book explores thematic issues in Jomon archaeology: the appearance of sedentism in the Japanese archipelago and the nature of Jomon settlements; the invention of pottery and the development and meaning of regional pottery styles; social and spiritual life; as well as the astronomical significance of causeway monuments and the conceptualisation of landscape in the Jomon period. These ideas are considered in the light of current work in the European Mesolithic and Neolithic, setting Jomon archaeology within a global context. The book draws extensively on new archaeological information from various parts of Japan, including the sites of Sannai Maruyama, Isedotai, Komankino among others.     From Mott insulator to ferromagnetic metal: a pressure study of Ca2_{2}RuO4_{4}

    We show that the pressure-temperature phase diagram of the Mott insulator Ca2_{2}RuO4_{4} features a metal-insulator transition at 0.5GPa: at 300K from paramagnetic insulator to paramagnetic quasi-two-dimensional metal; at TT \leq 12K from antiferromagnetic insulator to ferromagnetic, highly anisotropic, three-dimensional metal. % We compare the metallic state to that of the structurally related p-wave superconductor Sr2_{2}RuO4_{4}, and discuss the importance of structural distortions, which are expected to couple strongly to pressure.Comment: 4 pages, 4figure

    Mobile locally operated detachable end-effector manipulator for endoscopic surgery

    Purpose\n Local surgery is safer than remote surgery because emergencies can be more easily addressed. Although many locally operated surgical robots and devices have been developed, none can safely grasp organs and provide traction. A new manipulator with a detachable commercial forceps was developed that can act as a third arm for a surgeon situated in a sterile area near the patient. This mechanism can be disassembled into compact parts that enable mobile use.Methods\n A mobile locally operated detachable end-effector manipulator (LODEM) was developed and tested. This device uses crank-slider and cable-rod mechanisms to achieve 5 degrees of freedom and an acting force of more than 5 N. The total mass is less than 15 kg. The positional accuracy and speed of the prototype device were evaluated while performing simulated in vivo surgery.Results\n The accuracy of the mobile LODEM was 0.4 mm, sufficient for handling organs. The manipulator could be assembled and disassembled in 8 min, making it highly mobile. The manipulator could successfully handle the target organs with the required level of dexterity during an in vivo laparoscopic surgical procedure.Conclusions\n A mobile LODEM was designed that allows minimally invasive robotically assisted endoscopic surgery by a surgeon working near the patient.     Combined Use of a Solid-Phase Hexapeptide Ligand Library with Liquid Chromatography and Two-Dimensional Difference Gel Electrophoresis for Intact Plasma Proteomics

    The intact plasma proteome is of great interest in biomarker studies because intact proteins reflect posttranslational protein processing such as phosphorylation that may correspond to disease status. We examined the utility of a solid-phase hexapeptide ligand library in combination with conventional plasma proteomics modalities for comprehensive profiling of intact plasma proteins. Plasma proteins were sequentially fractionated using depletion columns for albumin and immunoglobulin, and separated using an anion-exchange column. Proteins in each fraction were treated with a solid-phase hexapeptide ligand library and compared to those without treatment. Two-dimensional difference gel electrophoresis demonstrated an increased number of protein spots in the treated samples. Mass spectrometric studies of these protein spots with unique intensity in the treated samples resulted in the identification of high- and medium-abundance proteins. Our results demonstrated the possible utility of a solid-phase hexapeptide ligand library to reveal greater number of intact plasma proteins. The characteristics of proteins with unique affinity to the library remain to be clarified by more extensive mass spectrometric protein identification, and optimized protocols should be established for large-scale plasma biomarker studies

    Dibutyryl cyclic adenosine monophosphate attenuates lung injury caused by cold preservation and ischemia-reperfusion

    AbstractObjective: Dibutyryl adenosine 3`,5`cyclic monophosphate (db-cAMP) is a membrane-permeable analog of adenosine 3`,5`cyclic monophosphate (cAMP). We examined the effect of db-cAMP against lung injury caused by cold preservation and ischemia-reperfusion. Methods: Rats were divided into three groups (each n = 6) according to the presence or absence of db-cAMP in the preservative solution and cold ischemia (4° C for 15 hours). In the fresh group, the lung was flushed with the preservative solution and reperfusion was performed immediately. In the control group and the db-cAMP group, the lung was flushed either with the solution or with a combination of the solution plus db-cAMP, respectively, and preserved at 4° C for 15 hours. The lung was reperfused for 60 minutes in an ex vivo rat lung perfusion model. Results: The shunt ratios of the reperfused lung in the db-cAMP group were 4.0% ± 1.6% and 3.4% ± 1.2% 10 and 60 minutes, respectively, after the initiation of reperfusion, being as low as those in the fresh group and significantly lower than those in the control group (p < 0.01). The wet/dry weight ratio of the lung tissue after reperfusion was 5.99 ± 1.50 in the db-cAMP group, which was similar to that in the fresh group (5.45 ± 0.23) and significantly lower than that in the control group (14.20 ± 3.43) (p < 0.01). Electron microscopic examination showed less damage in the pulmonary arterial endothelium in the db-cAMP group. Conclusions: We conclude that db-cAMP attenuates the lung injury by cold preservation and ischemia-reperfusion, at least partly by protection of the vascular endothelium.
