    The ‘quiet hunt’: the significance of mushroom foraging among Russian-speaking immigrants in New York City

    Urban foraging provides city dwellers with numerous ecosystem services, but this human- nature interaction is largely missing from the urban ecosystem services scholarship. This exploratory study aims to address this gap in the literature and examines the benefits and values associated with foraging in New York City, United States. We focus on Russian- speaking mushroom foragers, a previously unstudied community. Data from 10 interviews reveals that for some groups, foraging is primarily about cultural ecosystem services, with a provisioning attribute. Foraging supports multiple benefits, most notably contributions to social relations, cultural heritage, and recreational experiences; these nonmaterial contribu-tions often intertwine with material benefits. Our findings further demonstrate the mutual exchange of benefits between humans and nature, including services to ecosystems and species. Participants reported engagement in multiple stewardship practices and actively maintained and enhanced ecosystem services. We encourage future ecosystem services assessments to recognize foraging as an urban activity and consider the bi-directional exchange of benefits between humans and ecosystems. To some participants, foraging was an integral part of their relationship with the natural world, intertwined with relational values of connection to nature, kinship, love, and care. Our results suggest that relational values can be central for understanding the value of ecosystem services. Our study further illustrates that some ecosystem services may be associated with practices, rather than places, and future work should examine these links in more detail.     Noncommutative Moduli for Multi-Instantons

    There exists a recursive algorithm for constructing BPST-type multi-instantons on commutative R^4. When deformed noncommutatively, however, it becomes difficult to write down non-singular instanton configurations with topological charge greater than one in explicit form. We circumvent this difficulty by allowing for the translational instanton moduli to become noncommutative as well.     Typology of rivers and lakes within the Ukrainian part of the Vistula basin (Bug and San) and its compatibility with investigations in Poland

    This article describes an investigation of the hydrographical network in the Ukrainian part of the transboundary basins of the Bug and San rivers entering the Vistula basin, carried out by the authors using the typology of rivers and lakes in line with the European Union Water Framework Directive (WFD) 2000/60/EC requirements. The typology of the rivers is based on the typology system adopted in Poland. There are 5 abiotic types in the Bug river basin specified within the Ukraine. The small and medium upland rivers on carbonate or loess rocks dominate. Among the large rivers are the Poltva, Rata, Luga and Ryta. Four abiotic types of rivers are distinguished in the Ukrainian part of the San basin. The most numerous group consists of the small upland rivers on flysch rocks of the Carpathians. The analysis of the structure of the river basin networks showed that the small rivers form 98.5% of the total number (3115 rivers) in the Vistula basin within the Ukraine. Only 1.25% of the basin’s rivers form medium rivers. The percentages of large and very large rivers in the total basin streams are, respectively, 0.2 and 0.05%. There are 68 lakes within the Ukrainian part of the Bug basin, the majority of them (48 lakes, or nearly 71%) are in the category of very small lakes. As for the categories of medium and small lakes, each of them has 9 lakes (13%). There are only two large lakes, the Switiaz and Pulemetske (3%)

    Heavy electrons: Electron droplets generated by photogalvanic and pyroelectric effects

    Electron clusters, X-rays and nanosecond radio-frequency pulses are produced by 100 mW continuous-wave laser illuminating ferroelectric crystal of LiNbO_3. A long-living stable electron droplet with the size of about 100 mcm has freely moved with the velocity 0.5 cm/s in the air near the surface of the crystal experiencing the Earth gravitational field. The microscopic model of cluster stability, which is based on submicroscopic mechanics developed in the real physical space, is suggested. The role of a restraining force plays the inerton field, a substructure of the particles' matter waves, which a solitary one can elastically withstand the Coulomb repulsion of electrons. It is shown that electrons in the droplet are heavy electrons whose mass at least 1 million of times exceeds the rest mass of free electron.     Characterization of Auditory Disability and Its Relation to the Resilience

    The objective of the work is to establish the characterization of the auditory disability and its relationship with resilience at the Technical University of Manabí. The article shows a conceptual analysis related to the inclusion and social integration of disabled students. Based on the fact that the person with disabilities grows and develops in the same way as that of people without disabilities and what usually happens is that disabled people are rejected and discriminated against based on a prefabricated and erroneous conceptualization of these people. The results associated with the application of the SV-RES test prepared by the researchers are shown (Saavedra & Villalta, 2008b). Characterization of the auditory deficit is made in the students, and the limitations that derive from it are pointed out. We analyze the particularities related to communication with students who have a hearing disability and resilience in this type of student, where some personal highlights that in this sense constitute an example of resilience. Finally, the results related to the study of the relationship between students' hearing disability and the level of resilience dimensions are shown

    Nanorheology of viscoelastic shells: Applications to viral capsids

    We study the microrheology of nanoparticle shells [Dinsmore et al. Science 298, 1006 (2002)] and viral capsids [Ivanovska et al. PNAS 101, 7600 (2004)] by computing the mechanical response function and thermal fluctuation spectrum of a viscoelastic spherical shell that is permeable to the surrounding solvent. We determine analytically the damped dynamics of the shear, bend, and compression modes of the shell coupled to the solvent both inside and outside the sphere in the zero Reynolds number limit. We identify fundamental length and time scales in the system, and compute the thermal correlation function of displacements of antipodal points on the sphere and the mechanical response to pinching forces applied at these points. We describe how such a frequency-dependent antipodal correlation and/or response function, which should be measurable in new AFM-based microrheology experiments, can probe the viscoelasticity of these synthetic and biological shells constructed of nanoparticles.Comment: 17 page
