    The Virtual Design Studio on the Cloud: a Blended and Distributed Approach for Technology-mediated Design Education

However, learning environments in studio teaching have not been explored and exploited as a response to developing technology and changing socio-cultural context, yet. In order to alleviate the problem, this paper presents an innovative model for a virtual design studio which utilizes social networking media and cloud computing. The virtual design studio is conceptualized as a socio-technical system where intelligence is distributed across people and tools. The study proposes several means of augmenting intelligence in such a studio. The application of the theoretical framework is demonstrated in a real-life case study. The results of an empirical survey show that the proposed model was well accepted by the students. In the paper, the opportunities and challenges of this approach are discussed and suggestions are made for further studies

Although a huge amount of interdisciplinary knowledge is exchanged in building design processes, there is a lack of tools for representing information flows. Therefore, this paper focuses on the collaboration between architects and structural engineers and introduces an innovative matrix-based tool named “The Layered Dependency Structure Matrix” for modeling and managing the discipline-specific and collaborative design activities. The proposed method is compared with the conventional techniques used in the industry and its application is demonstrated in a beam design example

    Benthic Foraminifera of the Upper Jurassic Platform Carbonate Sequence in the Aydincik (Içel) Area, Central Taurides, S Turkey

    The Upper Jurassic sequence of the Aydincik (Içel) area consists of platform limestones which were deposited in a subtidal, restricted lagoon environment. Stratigraphic distribution of benthic foraminifera and calcareous algae, examined in thin-sections, is shown in a range-chart. The microfossil assemblage indicates the Salpingoporella sellii subzone of the Kurnubia palastiniensis cenozone, corresponding approximately to the lower part of the Malm. Some benthic foraminifera with considerable stratigraphic value within the Mesozoic Tethys are described. Among the benthic foraminifera, taxa of the family Pfenderinidae, especially the subfamily Kurnubiinae, are dominant and frequent throughout the sequence. The planispirally coiled taxa are represented by the families Nautiloculinidae, Charentiidae and Cyclamminidae (subfamily Bucciccrenatinae)

    Blended learning in design education: an analysis of students' experiences within the disciplinary differences framework

However, the majority of existing research on blended learning has assumed homogeneity of disciplines. This study suggests that research highlighting disciplinary effects and differences is much needed to effectively develop courses and tools consonant with the characteristics of each discipline. To help close this research gap, this paper focuses on design education and analyses student experiences in a "blended design studio" that combined the Moodle learning management system, live videoconferencing, and social networking media (Facebook) with traditional face-to-face learning (design studio). Students' perceptions of the methods and tools were elicited through structured and open-ended questions and qualitative variations in responses were categorised. Subsequent quantitative analysis revealed that the characteristics of soft-applied fields require customisation in blended courses and educational system designs in several ways

    Model evaluation and optimisation of nutrient removal potential for sequencing batch reactors

    Performance of sequencing batch reactors for simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal is evaluated by means of model simulation, using the activated sludge model, ASM2d, involving anoxic phosphorus uptake, recently proposed by the IAWQ Task group. The evaluation includes all major process configurations with different aerobic, anoxic, anaerobic sequences, and fill conditions. Basic relationships between modelling and design based on overall process stoichiometry are established for the interpretation of nutrient profiles associated with different operation modes.     THE APPLICATION OF SMARTWATCH IN MANAGING EMPLOYEE HEALTH MONITORING

    ABSTRACTWorkplace health issues have continued to increase, and this has caused problems such as increasing medical cost and medical leaves. In response to these issues, employers are starting to adopt health technology to overcome the problem such as smartwatch. Smartwatch technology is a wrist-worn device provided with a variety of sensors that are available for collecting physical activity and location data in real time. This paper aims to explore the future drivers of the smartwatch application in monitoring and managing employees’ health. The research study used exploratory research design utilizing the foresight methods. STEEPV analysis was used to identify the key drivers of smartwatch application and to develop a descriptive survey for assessing the impact and uncertainty of each driver. The survey was distributed to human resources managers of medium-sized companies in Malaysia. Technology readiness of smart watch adoption was evaluated using Technology Readiness Index (TRI). Thirty-five respondents took part in online survey. From the data analysis, top two drivers had been identified which are “social interaction” and “data transparency”. These drivers were used for developing future scenario of the smartwatch application in monitoring and managing employee health in the next 5 to 10 years. Four scenarios had been discussed in this paper which are healthy workplace environment, unattainable technology adoption, inefficient technology, and low adoption of smartwatch. This research would provide additional information about the future scenario of smartwatch application in managing employee health monitoring in Malaysia.
