    Consumer credit in comparative perspective

    We review the literature in sociology and related fields on the fast global growth of consumer credit and debt and the possible explanations for this expansion. We describe the ways people interact with the strongly segmented consumer credit system around the world—more specifically, the way they access credit and the way they are held accountable for their debt. We then report on research on two areas in which consumer credit is consequential: its effects on social relations and on physical and mental health. Throughout the article, we point out national variations and discuss explanations for these differences. We conclude with a brief discussion of the future tasks and challenges of comparative research on consumer credit.Accepted manuscrip

    Monitoring T cell-dendritic cell interactions in vivo by intercellular enzymatic labelling

    Interactions between different cell types are essential for multiple biological processes, including immunity, embryonic development and neuronal signalling. Although the dynamics of cell-cell interactions can be monitored in vivo by intravital microscopy, this approach does not provide any information on the receptors and ligands involved or enable the isolation of interacting cells for downstream analysis. Here we describe a complementary approach that uses bacterial sortase A-mediated cell labelling across synapses of immune cells to identify receptor-ligand interactions between cells in living mice, by generating a signal that can subsequently be detected ex vivo by flow cytometry. We call this approach for the labelling of 'kiss-and-run' interactions between immune cells 'Labelling Immune Partnerships by SorTagging Intercellular Contacts' (LIPSTIC). Using LIPSTIC, we show that interactions between dendritic cells and CD4+ T cells during T-cell priming in vivo occur in two distinct modalities: an early, cognate stage, during which CD40-CD40L interactions occur specifically between T cells and antigen-loaded dendritic cells; and a later, non-cognate stage during which these interactions no longer require prior engagement of the T-cell receptor. Therefore, LIPSTIC enables the direct measurement of dynamic cell-cell interactions both in vitro and in vivo. Given its flexibility for use with different receptor-ligand pairs and a range of detectable labels, we expect that this approach will be of use to any field of biology requiring quantification of intercellular communication

    IL-10 producing regulatory and helper T-cells in systemic lupus erythematosus

    Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a highly heterogeneous autoimmune disease characterised by the production of pathogenic autoantibodies against nuclear self-antigens. The anti-inflammatory and tolerogenic cytokine Interleukin-10 appears to play a paradoxical pathogenic role in SLE and is therefore currently therapeutically targeted in clinical trials. It is generally assumed that the pathogenic effect of IL-10 in SLE is due to its growth and differentiation factor activity on autoreactive B-cells, but effects on other cells might also play a role. To date, a unique cellular source of pathogenic IL-10 in SLE has not been identified. In this review, we focus on the contribution of different CD4+T-cell subsets to IL-10 and autoantibody production in SLE. In particular, we discuss that IL-10 produced by different subsets of adaptive regulatory T-cells, follicular helper T-cells and extra-follicular B-helper T-cells is likely to have different effects on autoreactive B-cell responses. A better understanding of the role of IL-10 in B-cell responses and lupus would allow to identify the most promising therapies for individual SLE patients in the future

    In Western Europe, perennial ryegrass is the most widely used grass species for grazing cattle, because of its high productivity, palatability and nutritive value. However, the low dry matter intake (DMI) of perennial ryegrass pasture has been identified as a major factor limiting milk production of high producing dairy cows. Altering the chemical, physical and mechanical characteristics that contribute to its low DMI through grass breeding and the choice of variety may be a way forward in trying to maximise its DMI.     3D-Fractal engineering based on oxide-only corner lithography

    This paper reports a new highly simplified machining process for three dimensional (3D)-fractal nanofabrication based on oxide-only corner lithography. It consists of a repeated sequence of wet etching (silicon), thermal oxidation and wet etching (silicon oxide). The previously reported 3D-fractal fabrication process needed additional low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) steps of silicon nitride, as well as local oxidation of silicon (LOCOS). Employing this new procedure, a three generation folded silicon oxide fractal sheet with approx. a 10 ”m footprint has been fabricated
