    Implicit complexity for coinductive data: a characterization of corecurrence

    We propose a framework for reasoning about programs that manipulate coinductive data as well as inductive data. Our approach is based on using equational programs, which support a seamless combination of computation and reasoning, and using productivity (fairness) as the fundamental assertion, rather than bi-simulation. The latter is expressible in terms of the former. As an application to this framework, we give an implicit characterization of corecurrence: a function is definable using corecurrence iff its productivity is provable using coinduction for formulas in which data-predicates do not occur negatively. This is an analog, albeit in weaker form, of a characterization of recurrence (i.e. primitive recursion) in [Leivant, Unipolar induction, TCS 318, 2004].Comment: In Proceedings DICE 2011, arXiv:1201.034

    International audienceIn 1988, Weispfenning published a seminal paper introducing a substitution technique for quantifier elimination in the linear theories of ordered and valued fields. The original focus was on complexity bounds including the important result that the decision problem for Tarski Algebra is bounded from below by a double exponential function. Soon after, Weispfenning's group began to implement substitution techniques in software in order to study their potential applicability to real world problems. Today virtual substitution has become an established computational tool, which greatly complements cylindrical algebraic decomposition. There are powerful implementations and applications with a current focus on satisfia-bility modulo theory solving and qualitative analysis of biological networks

    A formally verified abstract account of Gödel's incompleteness theorems

    We present an abstract development of Gödel’s incompleteness theorems, performed with the help of the Isabelle/HOL theorem prover. We analyze sufficient conditions for the theorems’ applicability to a partially specified logic. In addition to the usual benefits of generality, our abstract perspective enables a comparison between alternative approaches from the literature. These include Rosser’s variation of the first theorem, Jeroslow’s variation of the second theorem, and the S ́wierczkowski–Paulson semantics-based approach. As part of our framework’s validation, we upgrade Paulson’s Isabelle proof to produce a mech- anization of the second theorem that does not assume soundness in the standard model, and in fact does not rely on any notion of model or semantic interpretation
