A new type of pump turbine system specially developed for reverse osmosis application
A n ew type of pump has been developed specially suitable for reverse osmosis applications. The hydrodynamic theory of the pumps is given as well as some mechanical calculations typical of these p u m p s. Finally, the experimental performances of a number of working models arq - shown. A very short comment is also included on the feasibility of - utilizing a combined turbo-pump group of this type for energy recovery in reverse osmosis desalination plant
Balkan Societies of Social Men : Transcending Gender Boundaries
As transgender identities worldwide have begun to receive attention from students of gender and sexuality, a curious Balkan (but more specifically Albanian) tradition of female-to-male transgender ( sworn virgins ) surviving to the present day - an obscure and ambiguous theme until recently - is worthy of sociological attention. The sworn virgin phenomenon is studied in a larger, ethno-cultural context, zipping through such complicated - and sociologically contentious - notions as patriarchy, blood-feud, destructive entitlement, etc. It is argued that the sworn virgins of the Balkans were forced to become social men, assuming masculine social and family roles, due to specific economic and social conditions that have historically prevailed in northern Albania, but also in Kosovo and Montenegro. Because all aspects of human life in northern Albania have been regulated for centuries by customary law, known in its codified form as the Kanun of Lekë Dukagjini, the swearing to remain virgin for life may be considered as an escape mechanism for some women who were forced into unwanted marriages and into relations of extreme economic exploitation and social inequality
Of time, honor, and memory : Oral law in Albania
This essay provides a historical account of the role of oral tradition in passing on from generation to generation an ancient code of customary law that has shaped and dominated the lives of northern Albanians until well into the mid-twentieth century. This traditional body of customary law is known as the Kode of Leke Dukagjini. It represents a series of norms, mores, and injunctions that were passed down by word of mouth for generations and reputedly originally formulated by Leke Dukagjini, an Albanian prince and companion-in-arms to Albania's national hero, George Kastriot Skanderbeg (1405-68). Leke Dukagjini ruled the territories of Pulati, Puka, Mirdita, Lura, and Luma in northern Albania--known today as the region of Dukagjini--until the Ottoman armies seized Albania's northernmost city of Shkoder in 1479.Not
Inductive Sensor for measuring partial discharges in electrical machines
The research group 'Diagnosis of Electrical Machines and Insulation Materials (DIAMAT) of the University Carlos III of Madrid, has developed an inductive sensor that can detect and measure partial discharge that are characteristic in electrical machines (its analysis allows to estimate the aging degree of the internal insulation)
Internet of Things and Their Coming Perspectives: A Real Options Approach
Internet of things is developing at a dizzying rate, and companies are forced to implement it in order to maintain their operational efficiency. The high flexibility inherent to these technologies makes it necessary to apply an appropriate measure, which properly assesses risks and rewards. Real options methodology is available as a tool which fits the conditions, both economic and strategic, under which investment in internet of things technologies is developed. The contribution of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, it offers an adequate tool to assess the strategic value of investment in internet of things technologies. On the other hand, it tries to raise awareness among managers of internet of things technologies because of their potential to contribute to economic and social progress. The results of the research described in this paper highlight the importance of taking action as quickly as possible if companies want to obtain the best possible performance. In order to enhance the understanding of internet of things technologies investment, this paper provides a methodology to assess the implementation of internet of things technologies by using the real options approach; in particular, the option to expand has been proposed for use in the decision-making process
