Cluster Analysis of Myelin Nerve Fibers of the Periferal Nerve

    Get PDF
One of the unsolved issues in neuromorphology is the classification of myelin nerve fibers (MNF). Objective: to use cluster analysis to classify the sciatic nerve MNF. Material and methods. The work was performed using 5 one-year-old male Wistar rats. Semi-thin sections were stained with methylene blue. MNF morphometry was performed using ImageJ, and statistical processing – using the software environment R. Results of the study. Ward’s and k-means methods were used to cluster the MNF. Three clusters of MNFs are defined and their parameters are determined. The presented algorithm for adapting the literature data to the format of the obtained results includes determining the total average for the combined set of each indicator and the total variance, which is the sum of intragroup and intergroup variances. Conclusions: 1) for the classification of MNF it is advisable to use cluster analysis; 2) clustering should be performed according to the transsection areas of the axial cylinder and myelin sheath; 3) the number of clusters is determined by the agglomerative method of Ward, and their metrics – by the iterative method of k-means; 4) three clusters of MNF of the rat sciatic nerve differ in the transsection areas of the fibers, the axial cylinder and the myelin sheath and the percentage of nerve fibers; 5) when comparing identical indicators according to the obtained and literature data, the results were equivalent in the areas of the axial cylinder and myelin sheath and their shape coefficients, despite the fact that the classification of myelin fibers and their morphometry was performed using different methods

This paper presents the possibilities of Mendeley – a reference manager and social network for researchers. The key aspects of using this software as an effective reference manager as well as a tool for organizing full-text archive of publications and processing scientific sources when conducting research are highlighted. The possibilities of Mendeley as a social network, namely a means of communication and collaboration between researchers, sharing of reference database and search for new scientific publications are presented as well. In general, Mendeley, due to its functionality, is an integral part of the scientific research carried out by students, scientists or laboratory research groups. The use of Mendeley by all members of the research project will allow them to effectively search for original sources and analyze them; to quickly create the reference list according to different styles; to follow other researchers in order to view relevant papers; to greatly enhance the quality of the research; to expand the potential readership of their publications

According to the International Diabetes Federation the number of patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) continues to grow rapidly. It has been established that already in the early stages of DM dysfunction of the vascular endothelium occurs leading to the development of diabetic microangiopathy that, in turn, results in dysfunction of salivary glands. The submandibular gland is considered to be the main source for basal secretion of saliva and its dysfunction in case of DM results in the development of xerostomia. However, the features of morphological changes of its hemocapillaries in this pathology have been insufficiently studied. The aim is to establish the features of ultrastructural restructuring of hemocapillaries of the submandibular gland in case of experimental DM. Materials and methods. In the Wistar rats DM was induced with streptozotocin (6 mg / g body weight). Submandibular gland's capillaries were investigated on the ultrastructural level and their morphometric parameters were measured. Results. During experiment were observed structural changes in the basement membrane and morphometrically its thickening was increasing. Since 42nd day destructive changes of endothelial cells have developed manifested, shape factor of the lumen of capillaries was decreasing that indicating pronounced diabetic microangiopathy of the submandibular gland. In later stages (56 – 70 days) destructive changes have increased, morphometrically were confirmed the thinning of transport area of endothelial cells and greater decreasing of shape factor of hemocapillaries lumen. Conclusions. Hemocapillaries of the submandibular gland are sensitive to pathogenetic factors developing in DM and dependent on its duration

Effect of Hyperglycemia on the Excretory Ducts of the Submandibular Gland (Histologic Study)

    Get PDF
The paper highlights the peculiarities of histological changes in different subdivisions of the intralobular duct of the submandibular gland in rats in case of experimental hyperglycemia.Materials and methods. The study included 40 male Wistar rats weighing 230 to 250g. Experimental hyperglycemia was induced by a single intraperitoneal administration of streptozotocin. Biochemical and morphological investigations were conducted; the morphometric analysis was carried out.Results. Since the 28th day of the experiment, on the background of dynamic increase in the levels of glucose and glycated hemoglobin in the blood, there was observed the development of dystrophic changes in epithelial cells of the granular and striated ducts being accompanied by a gradual decrease in epithelial cell height by 10.28 – 29.46% and 10.77 – 28.28%, respectively. Morphological changes in the intercalated ducts were detected later – since the 42nd day of the experiment and the decrease in their epithelial cell height – by 15.60%, was seen on the 70th day only.Conclusions. Morphological changes in different subdivisions of the intralobular duct are of dystrophic nature and can be histologically detected since the 28th day of the experiment; they depend on the duration of hyperglycemia and are accompanied by a dynamic decrease in epithelial cell height

Multi-Step Clustering Approach of Myelinated Nerve Fibers in Experimental Neuromorphology

Indexed keywords SciVal Topics Metrics Abstract One of the unresolved issues in experimental neuromorphology is searching for a solution for myelinated nerve fibers clustering on set of morphometric parameters. Therefore, in this article, a new approach for cluster analysis of myelinated fibers is proposed based on their morpho-functional features. The proposed clustering approach was developed in R software environment and uses model-based clustering, which is performed in few steps with increasing number of morphometric parameters on each next step. Applying the proposed clustering solution shown high similarity of identified groups' morphometric parameters with respective physiological types of myelinated A-fibers. This fact, in addition to the algorithm implementation simplicity, facilitates its use on identifying clusters of myelinated fibers that represent different myelinated fibers subpopulation in experimental neuromorphological research with high level of reliability. Measurement of glomerulus diameter and Bowman's space width of renal albino rats

    No full text
Glomerulus diameter and Bowman's space width in renal microscopic images indicate various diseases. Therefore, the detection of the renal corpuscle and related objects is a key step in histopathological evaluation of renal microscopic images. However, the task of automatic glomeruli detection is challenging due to their wide intensity variation, besides the inconsistency in terms of shape and size of the glomeruli in the renal corpuscle. Here, a novel solution is proposed which includes the Particles Analyzer technique based on median filter for morphological image processing to detect the renal corpuscle objects. Afterwards, the glomerulus diameter and Bowman's space width are measured. The solution was tested with a dataset of 21 rats' renal corpuscle images acquired using light microscope. The experimental results proved that the proposed solution can detect the renal corpuscle and its objects efficiently. As well as, the proposed solution has the ability to manage any input images assuring its robustness to the deformations of the glomeruli even with the glomerular hypertrophy cases. Also, the results reported significant difference between the control and affected (due to ingested additional daily dose (14.6mg) of fructose) groups in terms of glomerulus diameter (97.40 ± 19.02m and 177.03 ± 54.48m, respectively)
