The influence of cannabis plant (Cannabis sativa) on reproductive system in mammals

    Get PDF
Due to the increased use of cannabis plants, objective studies are needed to determine its impact on the organism. By incorporating into the endocannabinoid system of reproductive organs, cannabinoids of cannabis plants might cause many changes in the morphology and function of the reproductive system. It has been confirmed that the use of cannabis leads to short-term changes in the secretion of male and female sex hormones. By developing tolerance to exogenous cannabinoids, the number of sex hormones returns to the initial level. Despite this, the changes in the number of sex hormones have a direct effect on the organs of the reproductive system. Abnormal appearance and dysfunction of sperm cells, as well as the histological and biochemical effects on the testicles are the result of cannabis activity on the male reproductive system. The unusual growth of the uterus and the possible impact on the processes that take place in the oviduct are some of the reasons that confirms the toxicity of the cannabis plant for the female reproductive system. The study of the targets and mechanisms of cannabis effects on the reproductive system allows changes in the regulation of reproductive functions. Precisely for this reason, further research will enable more detailed understanding of the impact of cannabis on the body and possible new ways of treating the reproductive disorders and infertility

Applying Paul’s Areopagus Model to Generation Z

    Get PDF
The members of Generation Z are today’s adolescents and young professionals, bringing with them their own culture. This culture requires other generations to use a cross-cultural approach to evangelism, as modeled by Paul in Athens (Acts 17:16-34). Paul observed the Athenian culture, built rapport, used common language with his audience, found common ground as a cultural doorway for his message, and redefined the audience’s understanding of the relationship between God and humans. The same steps can be applied to gospel proclamation to Generation Z for effective and relevant evangelism

The COVID-19 Safety and Health Accreditation Program: How Food Safety Inspectors and Building Inspectors Can Incentivize OSHA Compliance to Protect Workers During the Coronavirus Pandemic

    Get PDF
The coronavirus pandemic exposed the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) severe lack of commitment and resources to enforce standards aimed at providing a safe and healthful workplace for millions of workers who are at an increased risk of exposure to COVID-19 every time they step foot into the workplace. We’ve seen nurses treating COVID-19 patients pleading for personal protective equipment all across the county,1 a bus driver in Detroit dying of COVID-19 after complaining about lack of protections from a coughing passenger,2 and more than three hundred workers testing positive for COVID-19 in one Los Angeles factory, even after the CEO said that precautions for preventing the spread of the coronavirus were implemented.3 The simple truth is that OSHA needs help to make sure that every worker is protected in the workplace from exposure to the coronavirus, instead of relying on good faith efforts of employers to ensure worker health and safety. This paper proposes an actionable solution that relies on existing resources and infrastructure to provide the much-needed aid that OSHA in the following three steps. Step one, the creation of workplace safety and health standards that specifically address the unique nature of COVID-19. Step two, local departments of health and departments overseeing building code compliance take over the task of inspecting compliance with the newly-created standards. Step three, capitalizing on a new form of enforcement, consumer choice, through a visible and easily-distinguishable sign to signify a workplaces’ compliance with the standards and posting the status of a workplaces’ compliance in a centralized database and on widely-used apps

The influence of learner behaviour on beginner teachers’ perceptions of their own credibility

    Get PDF
Traditionally, teacher credibility has been influenced by how others perceive them. However, exploring teachers’ own perceptions of their credibility through the observation of learner behaviour may prove to be meaningful to teacher credibility. The aim of this study was to explore Intermediate Phase beginner teachers’ perceptions of their own credibility based on displayed learner behaviour in their classrooms. This qualitative study was presented through a case study research design. Eight Intermediate Phase beginner teachers were purposively selected. The data collection techniques used were interviews and observations. Semi-structured interviews and a researcher journal were used as data collection instruments. The data were analysed using inductive thematic data analysis. The conceptual framing of this study was underpinned by a modified theoretical model developed by McCroskey, Valencic and Richmond (2004). The findings showed that teachers’ perceptions of their own credibility were fluid as they engaged with various learners’ behaviour, which was used as a form of feedback during lessons and this feedback impacted teachers’ reactions and decisions to classroom situations. Ultimately, teachers’ perceptions of their own credibility focused on their immediacy, trustworthiness, competence and dynamism displayed in their practices

A Comparative Study of Carboxymethylcellulose and Enzyme-Containing

Objective:  To compare short-term effects of two commercially available saliva substitutes, carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) based preparation and enzyme-containing saliva substitute, on xerostomiarelated quality of life (QoL) in postradiation head and neck cancer (HNC) patients. Method: Fifty HNC patients with xerostomia whose self-rated xerostmia VAS score of  ≥ 50 mm were blinded and randomly assigned (1:1) to receive either CMC based (CMC group) or enzyme-containing saliva substitute (ENZ group), each for 14 days. A xerostomia questionnaire was used to evaluate self-rated xerostomia-related QoL. ANCOVA was used to compare response differences adjusting for baseline differences. Chi-square statistics were used to test categorical parameters between groups. P-value of < 0.05 was considered significant.  Results: After treatment, mean VAS scores of xerostomia severity in CMC and ENZ groups were 50.1 and 52.1 mm, respectively (P–value = 0.87). Proportions of patients reporting a “response” or “major improvement” from baseline in each of all individual QoL questions, and in other clinical acceptance were comparable between groups.  Conclusion: No significant difference on xerostomia-related QoL was observed between CMC based and enzyme-containing saliva substitute usage in HNC patients with xerostomia.  Keywords: xerostomia, radiation, carboxymethylcellulose, saliva substitute, quality of lif

    Re-imagining research culture

We are reminded constantly — by funders, by policy makers, and by our own researchers — of the need to incentivise a positive research culture. There is no question that we all want this, but how do we make it happen in practice? Changing culture requires a range of aligned approaches, a lot of patience, as well as creative ways of measuring whether we are moving in the right direction. This paper summarises the outcome of an event that brought together around 60 researchers, funders, policy makers, research managers and representatives from the publishing industry to identify the practical actions that promote a positive research culture; that is, one in which good practice and collegiality are the norm. This briefing is based on the experience of the University of Glasgow of assessing and furthering research culture, but our observations are relevant to all institutions. The question set for our first survey on research culture is also open for others to use or adapt
