Non-adiabatic effects in periodically driven-dissipative open quantum systems
We present a general method to calculate the quasi-stationary state of a
driven-dissipative system coupled to a transmission line (and more generally,
to a reservoir) under periodic modulation of its parameters. Using Floquet's
theorem, we formulate the differential equation for the system's density
operator which has to be solved for a single period of modulation. On this
basis we also provide systematic expansions in both the adiabatic and
high-frequency regime. Applying our method to three different systems -- two-
and three-level models as well as the driven nonlinear cavity -- we propose
periodic modulation protocols of parameters leading to a temporary suppression
of effective dissipation rates, and study the arising non-adiabatic features in
the response of these systems.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure

Natural variation in Arabidopsis thaliana: Molecular genetic architecture of stress tolerance under water deficit
Abstract only availableThe functional genomics tools available for studying Arabidopsis thaliana are a great resource for researchers trying to characterize and understand the genetic basis of natural variation. Genome wide transcript profiling can simultaneously monitor the gene expression programs regulated by growth and development and signal transduction pathways in response to environmental stress conditions. The responses of plants to water deficit depend on the extent and rate of water loss and its timing and duration. As a physical stress, water deficit triggers biochemical responses through a cascade that includes stress perception, signal transduction and regulation of gene expression. Arabidopsis accessions differ largely in their adaptation to stress tolerance. To understand the genetic basis of this intra-specific variation we analyzed five accessions under gradual water deficit leading to severe stress conditions. The changes in the gene expression profiles under water deficit conditions were studied using functional genomics tools, microarray and quantitative real time PCR and the regulatory roles of stress induced and developmental related transcripts will be discussed.Plant Genomics Internships @ M
This study examines the juridical institutions of diffuse interests, the class action and res judicata, seeking to highlight the relevant aspects of each one and those who serve as point of contact between the three topics, as well as to contextualize the problem in the historical the present days. Based on these data, discussed in the light of the doctrine and jurisprudence, as well as U. S. law, it is concluded that, arrived postmodernity, the solid and rigorous institute of res judicata, in the field of common interests and headquarters in the context of class action, not fully meet the needs of judicial protection of fundamental rights, as well as their guarantees sisters (acquired right and perfect juridical act), to the point where courts allocate the claim that no one has the right to purchase pollute. Diffuse interests, on the other hand, involve constitutional rights and especially the fundamental rights of the human person and of humanity itself, such as the right to a healthy environment, defended in court by legitimate entities, seeking to safeguard interests of non individualized people. Considering class action related to discretionary administrative act, the sentence may be in based on opportunity and convenience, making no res judicata. In the case of class action, the objective law should be treated as law, submitting to the revocability, which is consistent with the times of liquid modernity and streets taken by the social body multitude
SCaN Transportable Communication Platform (STCP)
NASA Glenn Research Center required a satellite communication trailer that served dual purposes; 24/7 Emergency Communication Services (ECS) in the event of a natural or manmade disaster that disrupted conventional communications, and a Ka Band NASA TDRS capability providing a research capability for over the air evaluations/characterizations. The trailer was to be field deployable, environmentally controlled and self-contained providing local area networks (LANs) and Wide Area Networks (WAN's) with user access both wired (Ethernet) and wireless (802.11) supporting VoIP, Internet Web access and Email. The TDRSS terminal included a 200W TWT amplifier mounted on the feed boom, individual up and down converters, and custom integrated waveguide and a supporting feed system. Other features such as a mast, generator, electrical, lighting, surveillance, and storage capabilities were also required. The Trailer was developed and demonstrated these original requested capabilities. New Requirements are defined and the trailer is now being evolved and upgraded to be a backup for the Near- Earth Network (NEN) Stations at KSC that will support the launch phase of EM-1. This paper presents the current and future capabilities of the trailer and additional options that will make it a valuable deployable asset to support remote operations from any launch from location
Legislative Production and Ideology Voter Scores: Three Essays
Legislators possess supply-side characteristics in the production process of public sector
outcomes. Constituents demand legislative services and choose those who most closely resemble
their preferences. There are several organizations that rate the performance of congressmen and
senators with respect to their votes on identified sets of bills they (the rating organizations)
concern themselves with. It is well-known that legislative production is influenced significantly
by the ideology of legislators (Kau and Rubin 1979 ; Dougan and Munger 1989; Poole &
Rosenthal 1996;Levitt 1996). However, while these scores have been labeled ideology scores it
is not clear whether or not they are merely responses to constituent interest (Downs 1957:Kalt &
Zupan 1984; Strattmann, 1998;Strattmann 2000). While this question is not novel, with findings
on both sides of the discussion containing scholastic merit (Bender and Lott 1996), we seek to
analyze the import of these scores on legislative production; do they influence contributions? cosponsorship
behavior on certain bills? Do economic conditions influence the scores themselves?
We find evidence of the affirmative in all three cases
Variation in cell wall composition and bioenergy potential of rice straw
2014 Summer. In most grain crops the leaf and straw is often under-utilized. This biomass is largely plant cell wall, whose heterogeneous composition and recalcitrance limits end uses such as forage or bioenergy. I review the desirable traits for several bioenergy pathways from this biomass and identify traits in biomass that need to be optimized for enzymatic or thermochemical conversion of the biomass to energy. Sufficient variation exists across species and varieties for improving these traits through breeding. I assess variation in cellulose, lignin, hemicellulose, ash, total glucose, total xylose, mixed linkage glucan, saccarification yield and efficiency, hydroxyproline content and bulk density across two environments in the leaf and stem tissue of five rice varieties. Environment and tissue type are highly influential on the composition and yield phenotypes, and some traits perform better than others at predicting bioenergy yield in the field environment. Optimizing specific bioenergy-related phenotypes in isolation is not sufficient as overall crop health relies on many components. The plant cell wall serves an important function in crop health as a critical barrier against pests and diseases. I investigate the role of a family of putative broad spectrum defense response genes in rice, OsOXOs, that degrade oxalic acid: a pathogenicity factor. When expression of these genes is modified, I find a large impact on disease resistance to Sclerotinia sclerotiorum but little impact in the presence of Rhizoctonia solani. OsOXOs must play an important role in defense against S. sclerotiorum which relies on oxalic acid as a pathogenicity factor, because OsOXOs can degrade oxalic acid. R. solani utilizes a broader range of enzymes and compounds, limiting the effectiveness of OsOXOs against R. solani. With the bioenergy phenotyping methods optimized above, I assess saccharification yield of a rice mapping population, along with other agronomic traits including total biomass, flowering time, grain yield, and plant height. Transgressive segregation is apparent for all traits and quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping approaches are presented. With the methods and populations evaluated here, we are closer to identifying the conditions and genes that can maximize biomass tailored for many purposes
