    Double-Slit Interference and Temporal Topos

    The electron double-slit interference is re-examined from the point of view of temporal topos. Temporal topos (or t-topos) is an abstract algebraic (categorical) method using the theory of sheaves. A brief introduction to t-topos is given. When the structural foundation for describing particles is based on t-topos, the particle-wave duality of electron is a natural consequence. A presheaf associated with the electron represents both particle-like and wave-like properties depending upon whether an object in the site (t-site) is specified (particle-like) or not (wave-like). It is shown that the localization of the electron at one of the slits is equivalent to choosing a particular object in the t-site and that the electron behaves as a wave when it passes through a double-slit because there are more than one object in the t-site. Also, the single-slit diffraction is interpreted as a result of the possibility of many different ways of factoring a morphism between two objects

    Incisional atrial reentrant tachycardia: experimental study on the conduction property through the isthmus

    AbstractBackgroundIncisional atrial reentrant tachycardia is a life-threatening tachyarrhythmia after surgery for congenital heart disease. Slow conduction through an isthmus between anatomical barriers, such as a right atriotomy or the sites for cannulation, has been shown to be a prerequisite for perpetuation of the incisional atrial reentrant tachycardia. However, the conduction property through the isthmus has not been examined in detail.MethodsTo examine the conduction property, 2 tandem incisions were made on the lateral right atrium with various distances (3 to 20 mm) between the incisions in 16 canines. Four weeks after the surgery, the lateral right atrium was mapped epicardially during pacing to examine the conduction property through the isthmus. The conduction property was characterized by approximated curves of the conduction velocity through the isthmus in accordance with the pacing cycle lengths. The atrial tissue at the isthmus was examined microscopically.ResultsThe approximated curves of the conduction velocity were classified into 3 different types. Decremental conduction was observed only in the isthmi between 5 and 15 mm in width. A small amount of surviving myocardium between the scars formed the critical isthmus microscopically (decremental type). In the isthmi wider than 15 mm in width, slow conduction was not seen at any paced cycle length (nondecremental type). In the extremely narrow isthmi less than 5 mm in width, all of the atrial myocardium at the isthmus was replaced by fibrous tissue. Conduction was blocked at the isthmus and the activation detoured around the incisions (block type). There was a statistically significant difference in the approximated curves between the 3 different types of conduction properties (P < .01).ConclusionThe width of the isthmus determines the conduction property through the isthmus that contributes to the development of the incisional atrial reentrant tachycardia. Thus, the incisional atrial reentrant tachycardia may be preventable by leaving a sufficient amount of surviving myocardium between the incisions or by connecting the incisions by an ablative procedure

    Soluble lectin-like oxidized LDL receptor-1 (sLOX-1) as a sensitive and specific biomarker for acute coronary syndrome—Comparison with other biomarkers

    SummaryBackgroundLectin-like oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor-1 (LOX-1) appears to be involved in atherosclerotic plaque vulnerability and rupture. Circulating soluble LOX-1 (sLOX-1) levels are dramatically elevated in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), and its diagnostic sensitivity and specificity is superior to high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP). In this study, we have compared the diagnostic value of sLOX-1 for ACS with those of troponin T (TnT) and heart-type fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP).MethodsOne hundred and seven patients who underwent coronary angiography (CAG), including 18 ACS and 89 non-ACS patients were enrolled. Peripheral blood samples were obtained during the emergent or elective CAG. The non-ACS group consisted of 30 patients with normal CAG, 30 stable angina pectoris patients controlled by medical treatment, and 29 patients with stable angina who required elective coronary revascularization (percutaneous coronary intervention or coronary artery bypass graft).ResultsAge, gender, lipid profiles, or prevalence of diabetes, smoking, or hypertension were not significantly different between ACS and non-ACS. These factors did not significantly affect blood sLOX-1 levels. Circulating sLOX-1, TnT, and H-FABP levels were significantly higher in ACS than non-ACS. Area under the curve (AUC) values of the receiver-operating characteristic curves were 0.948, 0.704, and 0.691 for sLOX-1, TnT, and H-FABP, respectively. In a TnT-negative (<0.03ng/mL) subgroup, the AUC values for sLOX-1 and H-FABP were 0.848 and 0.476, respectively.ConclusionCirculating sLOX-1 is a more sensitive and specific biomarker for ACS than TnT and H-FABP, and provides additional diagnostic values when measured in combination with TnT

    BACKGROUND: In arthroscopic surgery, the suture anchor technique has become popular for rotator cuff repair. Preoperative evaluation of the bone microstructure is of utmost importance because, especially in elderly patients, osteoporotic changes may cause anchor pullout, which results in failure of rotator cuff repair. Many groups have reported humeral microstructural analysis; however, most studies were experiments using porcine specimens or human cadavers. In this study, we used multidetector row computed tomography to successfully perform in vivo evaluation of the bone microstructure of the humeral greater tuberosity in patients with rotator cuff tears. METHODS: Ten patients were examined. Regions of interest were defined in six quadrants of the greater tuberosity (medial, lateral, and far lateral rows of the anterior and posterior areas). The local bone mineral density and the trabecular microstructural parameters, including the mean bone volume to total volume (BV/TV), trabecular thickness, trabecular separation, and structure model index (SMI), were measured using bone analysis software. RESULTS: The BV/TV of the posteromedial region was highest and the SMI of the posteromedial region was lowest. These findings suggest that the bone quality of the posteromedial portion is the highest within the greater tuberosity. CONCLUSION: Because the bone quality may be correlated with the pullout strength of suture anchors, our method can help to understand the individual and regional variance in bone quality and may lead to the creation of personalized surgical protocols.博士(医学)・乙第1360号・平成27年5月28日© 2014 Sakamoto et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.     Development of a Si/CdTe semiconductor Compton telescope

    We are developing a Compton telescope based on high resolution Si and CdTe imaging devices in order to obtain a high sensitivity astrophysical observation in sub-MeV gamma-ray region. In this paper, recent results from the prototype Si/CdTe semiconductor Compton telescope are reported. The Compton telescope consists of a double-sided Si strip detector (DSSD) and CdTe pixel detectors, combined with low noise analog LSI, VA32TA. With this detector, we obtained Compton reconstructed images and spectra from line gamma-rays ranging from 81 keV up to 356 keV. The energy resolution is 3.8 keV and 7.9 keV at 122 keV and 356 keV, respectively, and the angular resolution is 9.9 degrees and 5.7 degrees at 122 keV and 356 keV, respectively.Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures, submitted to SPIE conference proceedings vol. 5501, "High-Energy Detectors in Astronomy", Glasgow UK, 6/21-6/24 200

    Development of Genome-Wide SNP Markers for Barley via Reference- Based RNA-Seq Analysis

    Marker-assisted selection of crop plants requires DNA markers that can distinguish between the closely related strains often used in breeding. The availability of reference genome sequence facilitates the generation of markers, by elucidating the genomic positions of new markers as well as of their neighboring sequences. In 2017, a high quality genome sequence was released for the six-row barley (Hordeum vulgare) cultivar Morex. Here, we developed a de novo RNA-Seq-based genotyping procedure for barley strains used in Japanese breeding programs. Using RNA samples from the seedling shoot, seedling root, and immature flower spike, we mapped next-generation sequencing reads onto the transcribed regions, which correspond to ∼590 Mb of the whole ∼4.8-Gbp reference genome sequence. Using 150 samples from 108 strains, we detected 181,567 SNPs and 45,135 indels located in the 28,939 transcribed regions distributed throughout the Morex genome. We evaluated the quality of this polymorphism detection approach by analyzing 387 RNA-Seq-derived SNPs using amplicon sequencing. More than 85% of the RNA-Seq SNPs were validated using the highly redundant reads from the amplicon sequencing, although half of the indels and multiple-allele loci showed different polymorphisms between the platforms. These results demonstrated that our RNA-Seq-based de novo polymorphism detection system generates genome-wide markers, even in the closely related barley genotypes used in breeding programs
