    Effects of nitrogen substitution in amorphous carbon films on electronic structure and surface reactivity studied with x-ray and ultra-violet photoelectron spectroscopies

    We investigated the effects of incorporating a very low percentage of nitrogen on the local and the electronic structure of amorphous carbon (a-C) using X-ray pho- toelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and ultra-violet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). Nitrogen-doped amorphous carbon films (a-CNx) with varying nitrogen content, were prepared by a thermal decomposition method using a mixture of CH4 + NH3 under atmosphere. A slight shift of the C 1s core-level spectrum toward the higher binding energy (BE) side was detected in a-CNx as a function of nitrogen content. This was interpreted as a charge transfer between carbon and nitrogen atoms rather than as a shift of the Fermi level (EF). The C 1s peak shifts can be explained by the presence of two kinds of C{N local structures and the charge transferred bulk C{C compo- nents by nitrogen atoms. The two kinds of deconvoluted C 1s components could be well correlated with the two N 1s components. Two localized states were detected below the EF in UPS spectra of a-CNx, which could be assigned to defect bands. These defects played a significant role in the surface reactivity, and were stabilized in a-CNx. The adsorption and reaction of NO were carried out on a-CNx as well as a-C films. It was found that both defect sites and O2- species were responsible on a-C, while O2- species were selectively active for NO adsorption on a-CNx. We concluded that nitrogen doping reduces defect density to stabilize the surface of a-C, while at the same time inducing the selective adsorption capability of NO

    Characterization of SrTiO3 target doped with Co ions, SrCo Ti1−O3−δ, and their thin films prepared by pulsed laser ablation (PLA) in water for visible light response

    SrTiO3(STO) and Co-doped SrTiO3(Co-STO) sintered targets were synthesized at 1573 K, then underwent pulsed laser ablation (PLA) to prepare their thin films. The targets showed clear XRD peaks of the STO until the doped Co amount reached 30% denoted as Co(30)-STO. Doped Co ions were substituted with octahedrally coordinated Ti ions as the Co2+ state, which was proved by the Co 2p satellite peaks in the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra. The STO and Co(30)-STO targets were treated to evaluate their charge compensation as follows; sputtered by an Ar ion gun, exposed to air, reduction with hydrogen at 1073 K, then exposed to air, and oxidized at 1073 K. Following exposure of the Ar-sputtered target to the air, charge transfer reactions occurred among Co2+,Ti3+,O2- and Sr2+ species which were clarified by their XPS spectra. The origin of two kinds of O 1s spectra detected at 530 and 533 eV was studied by these five treatments and was assigned to the bulk and surface oxygen species, respectively. The PLA of the STO and Co-STO targets was carried out in water at 355 nm and with a constant laser fluence. The atomic ratios of the Ti/Sr and Co/Sr as well as that for the two kinds of O 1s spectra of the LA thin films were studied. The effect of the doped Co ions in the crystal structure of the thin films was studied by the XRD peak shift of the SrTiO3 (110) face. Diffuse reflectance spectra revealed a quantum-sized effect for the r.t. deposited STO thin film, and a d-d transition and charge transfer band for the Co-STO targets. Photo-degradation of methylene blue was carried out on the PLA thin films under very weak power (0.7 mW) visible light at 460 nm from which a quantum yield was obtained to evaluate the role of the doped Co ions in the STO

    Purpose Atlantodens osteoarthritis and atlantoaxial osteoarthritis cause neck pain and suboccipital headaches. Currently, knowledge on the risk factors for atlantoaxial osteoarthritis is lacking. This study aimed to investigate the factors related to the increased risk of atlantoaxial osteoarthritis. Methods We analyzed computed tomography (CT) images of the upper cervical spine of 1266 adult trauma patients for whom upper cervical spine CT was performed at our hospital between 2014 and 2019. The degree of atlantoaxial osteoarthritis was quantified as none-to-mild (not having osteoarthritis) or moderateto- severe (having osteoarthritis). Risk factors associated with atlantoaxial osteoarthritis were identified using univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses. Results The study group included 69.4% men, and the overall average age of the study population was 54.9 ± 20.4 years. The following factors were independently and significantly associated with atlantoaxial osteoarthritis in the multivariable logistic regression analysis: age in the sixth decade or older (odds ratio [OR], 20.5; 95% confidence interval [CI], 6.2‒67.2, p < 0.001), having calcific synovitis (OR, 4.9; 95% CI, 2.4‒9.9, p < 0.001), women sex (OR, 3.3; 95% CI, 1.9‒5.7, p = 0.002), and not having atlantodens osteoarthritis (OR, 2.1; 95% CI, 1.2‒3.8, p = 0.014). Conclusion In the multivariable logistic regression analysis, age in the sixth decade or older, calcification of the transverse ligament, being women, and not having atlantodens osteoarthritis were found to be significantly associated with atlantoaxial osteoarthritis. Delayed diagnosis and treatment can be avoided by focusing on these risk factors.博士(医学)・甲第873号・令和5年3月15

    Effects of equivalent composition on superconducting properties of high-entropy REOBiS2_2 (RE = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd) single crystals

    Superconductors are influenced by high-entropy alloys (HEAs); these have been investigated in various functional materials. REOBiS2_2 (RE = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, and Gd in different combinations) single crystals with HEAs at the RE-site were successfully grown using the flux method. The obtained crystals were plate-shaped (1 mm2^2) with a well-developed c-plane. Ce was present in both trivalent (Ce3+^{3+}) and tetravalent (Ce4+^{4+}) electronic configurations; the concentration of Ce4+^{4+} at the RE-site was approximately 10 at% in all single crystals. The single crystals showed superconducting transition temperature with zero resistivity within 1.2-4.2 K. The superconducting transition temperature, superconducting anisotropy, electronic specific heat coefficient, and Debye temperature of the crystals were not correlated with the mixed entropy at the RE-site. Except for the electronic specific heat coefficient, the variation of these parameters as a function of mixed entropy showed different trends for equivalent and non-equivalent RE element compositions. Thus, the configuration of RE elements influences the superconducting properties of REOBiS2_2 single crystals, alluding to a method of modulating transition temperatures

    Myofibroblasts impair myocardial impulse propagation by heterocellular connexin43 gap-junctional coupling through micropores

    Aim: Composite population of myofibroblasts (MFs) within myocardial tissue is known to alter impulse propagation, leading to arrhythmias. However, it remains unclear whether and how MFs alter their propagation patterns when contacting cardiomyocytes (CMs) without complex structural insertions in the myocardium. We attempted to unveil the effects of the one-sided, heterocellular CM-MF connection on the impulse propagation of CM monolayers without the spatial insertion of MFs as an electrical or mechanical obstacle.Methods and results: We evaluated fluo8-based spatiotemporal patterns in impulse propagation of neonatal rat CM monolayers cultured on the microporous membrane having 8-μm diameter pores with co-culture of MFs or CMs on the reverse membrane side (CM-MF model or CM-CM model, respectively). During consecutive pacing at 1 or 2 Hz, the CM monolayers exhibited forward impulse propagation from the pacing site with a slower conduction velocity (θ) and a larger coefficient of directional θ variation in the CM-MF model than that in the CM-CM model in a frequency-dependent manner (2 Hz &gt;1 Hz). The localized placement of an MF cluster on the reverse side resulted in an abrupt segmental depression of the impulse propagation of the upper CM layer, causing a spatiotemporally non-uniform pattern. Dye transfer of the calcein loaded in the upper CM layer to the lower MF layer was attenuated by the gap-junction inhibitor heptanol. Immunocytochemistry identified definitive connexin 43 (Cx43) between the CMs and MFs in the membrane pores. MF-selective Cx43 knockdown in the MF layer improved both the velocity and uniformity of propagation in the CM monolayer.Conclusion: Heterocellular Cx43 gap junction coupling of CMs with MFs alters the spatiotemporal patterns of myocardial impulse propagation, even in the absence of spatially interjacent and mechanosensitive modulations by MFs. Moreover, MFs can promote pro-arrhythmogenic impulse propagation when in face-to-face contact with the myocardium that arises in the healing infarct border zone

    SILVERRUSH. III. Deep Optical and Near-Infrared Spectroscopy for Lya and UV-Nebular Lines of Bright Lya Emitters at z=6-7

    We present Lya and UV-nebular emission line properties of bright Lya emitters (LAEs) at z=6-7 with a luminosity of log L_Lya/[erg s-1] = 43-44 identified in the 21-deg2 area of the SILVERRUSH early sample developed with the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey data. Our optical spectroscopy newly confirm 21 bright LAEs with clear Lya emission, and contribute to make a spectroscopic sample of 96 LAEs at z=6-7 in SILVERRUSH. From the spectroscopic sample, we select 7 remarkable LAEs as bright as Himiko and CR7 objects, and perform deep Keck/MOSFIRE and Subaru/nuMOIRCS near-infrared spectroscopy reaching the 3sigma-flux limit of ~ 2x10^{-18} erg s-1 for the UV-nebular emission lines of He II1640, C IV1548,1550, and O III]1661,1666. Except for one tentative detection of C IV, we find no strong UV-nebular lines down to the flux limit, placing the upper limits of the rest-frame equivalent widths (EW_0) of ~2-4 A for He II, C IV, and O III] lines. Here we also investigate the VLT/X-SHOOTER spectrum of CR7 whose 6 sigma detection of He II is claimed by Sobral et al. Although two individuals and the ESO-archive service carefully re-analyze the X-SHOOTER data that are used in the study of Sobral et al., no He II signal of CR7 is detected, supportive of weak UV-nebular lines of the bright LAEs even for CR7. Spectral properties of these bright LAEs are thus clearly different from those of faint dropouts at z~7 that have strong UV-nebular lines shown in the various studies. Comparing these bright LAEs and the faint dropouts, we find anti-correlations between the UV-nebular line EW_0 and UV-continuum luminosity, which are similar to those found at z~2-3.Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures.
