The influence of atmosphere on the performance of pure-phase WZ and ZB InAs nanowire transistors
We compare the characteristics of phase-pure MOCVD grown ZB and WZ InAs
nanowire transistors in several atmospheres: air, dry pure N and O, and
N bubbled through liquid HO and alcohols to identify whether
phase-related structural/surface differences affect their response. Both WZ and
ZB give poor gate characteristics in dry state. Adsorption of polar species
reduces off-current by 2-3 orders of magnitude, increases on-off ratio and
significantly reduces sub-threshold slope. The key difference is the greater
sensitivity of WZ to low adsorbate level. We attribute this to facet structure
and its influence on the separation between conduction electrons and surface
adsorption sites. We highlight the important role adsorbed species play in
nanowire device characterisation. WZ is commonly thought superior to ZB in InAs
nanowire transistors. We show this is an artefact of the moderate humidity
found in ambient laboratory conditions: WZ and ZB perform equally poorly in the
dry gas limit yet equally well in the wet gas limit. We also highlight the
vital role density-lowering disorder has in improving gate characteristics, be
it stacking faults in mixed-phase WZ or surface adsorbates in pure-phase
nanowires.Comment: Accepted for publication in Nanotechnolog
Terra incognita—cerebellar contributions to neuropsychiatric and cognitive dysfunction in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia
Although converging evidence has positioned the human cerebellum as an important relay for intact cognitive and neuropsychiatric processing, changes in this large structure remain mostly overlooked in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), a disease which is characterized by cognitive and neuropsychiatric deficits. The present study assessed whether degeneration in specific cerebellar subregions associate with indices of cognition and neuropsychiatric performance in bvFTD. Our results demonstrate a relationship between cognitive and neuropsychiatric decline across various domains of memory, language, emotion, executive, visuospatial function, and motivation and the degree of gray matter degeneration in cerebellar lobules V–VII. Most notably, bilateral cerebellar lobule VII and the posterior vermis emerged as distinct for memory processes, the right cerebellar hemisphere underpinned emotion, and the posterior vermis was highlighted in language dysfunction in bvFTD. Based on cortico-cerebellar connectivity maps, these findings in the cerebellum are consistent with the neural connections with the cortices involved in these domains in patients with bvFTD. Overall, the present study underscores the significance of cortical-cerebellar networks associated with cognition and neuropsychiatric dysfunction in bvFTD
Self-reported domain-specific and accelerometer-based physical activity and sedentary behaviour in relation to psychological distress among an urban Asian population
Background: The interpretation of previous studies on the association of physical activity and sedentary behaviour with psychological health is limited by the use of mostly self-reported physical activity and sedentary behaviour, and a focus on Western populations. We aimed to explore the association of self-reported and devise-based measures of physical activity and sedentary behaviour domains on psychological distress in an urban multi-ethnic Asian population.
Methods: From a population-based cross-sectional study of adults aged 18-79 years, data were used from an overall sample (n = 2653) with complete self-reported total physical activity/sedentary behaviour and domain-specific physical activity data, and a subsample (n = 703) with self-reported domain-specific sedentary behaviour and accelerometry data. Physical activity and sedentary behaviour data were collected using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ), a domain-specific sedentary behaviour questionnaire and accelerometers. The Kessler Screening Scale (K6) and General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) were used to assess psychological distress. Logistic regression models were used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals, adjusted for socio-demographic and lifestyle characteristics.
Results: The sample comprised 45.0% men (median age = 45.0 years). The prevalence of psychological distress based on the K6 and GHQ-12 was 8.4% and 21.7%, respectively. In the adjusted model, higher levels of self-reported moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) were associated with significantly higher odds for K6 (OR = 1.47 [1.03-2.10]; p-trend = 0.03) but not GHQ-12 (OR = 0.97 [0.77-1.23]; p-trend = 0.79), when comparing the highest with the lowest tertile. Accelerometry-assessed MVPA was not significantly associated with K6 (p-trend = 0.50) nor GHQ-12 (p-trend = 0.74). The highest tertile of leisure-time physical activity, but not work- or transport-domain activity, was associated with less psychological distress using K6 (OR = 0.65 [0.43-0.97]; p-trend = 0.02) and GHQ-12 (OR = 0.72 [0.55-0.93]; p-trend = 0.01). Self-reported sedentary behaviour was not associated with K6 (p-trend = 0.90) and GHQ-12 (p-trend = 0.33). The highest tertile of accelerometry-assessed sedentary behaviour was associated with significantly higher odds for K6 (OR = 1.93 [1.00-3.75]; p-trend = 0.04), but not GHQ-12 (OR = 1.34 [0.86-2.08]; p-trend = 0.18).
Conclusions: Higher levels of leisure-time physical activity and lower levels of accelerometer-based sedentary behaviour were associated with lower psychological distress. This study underscores the importance of assessing accelerometer-based and domain-specific activity in relation to mental health, instead of solely focusing on total volume of activity
Mechanical performance of parallel bamboo strand lumber columns under axial compression: Experimental and numerical investigation
This paper presents an investigation on the mechanical performance of parallel bamboo strand lumber (PBSL) columns under axial compression. Experimental test and numerical analysis were performed for 40 PBSL columns with various slenderness ratios. Failure modes, ultimate capacity and load-strain response are reported and evaluated. Compressive failure is the typical failure mode of columns with small slenderness ratios, however, buckling failure is commonly observed for longer columns. Elastic eigenvalue analysis is found effective to predict critical buckling load of long columns, as buckling occurs within elastic range. However inelastic behavior has significant effect on critical load when the buckling stress exceeds proportional limit of the material. As a result, inelastic approaches provide more accurate prediction of critical load for columns with a slenderness ratio lower than the elastic threshold (λy). The presented experimental results and numerical analysis validated the feasibility of the elastic/inelastic buckling analysis approaches on determination of ultimate capacity of axial loaded PBSL columns
Carrier and polarization dynamics in monolayer MoS2
In monolayer MoS2 optical transitions across the direct bandgap are governed
by chiral selection rules, allowing optical valley initialization. In time
resolved photoluminescence (PL) experiments we find that both the polarization
and emission dynamics do not change from 4K to 300K within our time resolution.
We measure a high polarization and show that under pulsed excitation the
emission polarization significantly decreases with increasing laser power. We
find a fast exciton emission decay time on the order of 4ps. The absence of a
clear PL polarization decay within our time resolution suggests that the
initially injected polarization dominates the steady state PL polarization. The
observed decrease of the initial polarization with increasing pump photon
energy hints at a possible ultrafast intervalley relaxation beyond the
experimental ps time resolution. By compensating the temperature induced change
in bandgap energy with the excitation laser energy an emission polarization of
40% is recovered at 300K, close to the maximum emission polarization for this
sample at 4K.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures including supplementary materia
Shoulder recovery for head and neck cancer patients after unilateral neck dissection: a pilot exploratory study
An established side-effect of neck dissection (ND) for head and neck (HNC) tumour management includes shoulder dysfunction (SD), which can impact quality of life (QOL). Shoulder strength and range of movement (ROM) are key parameters to be monitored in SD. However, such evaluations are not routinely conducted in the clinical setting. The aim of this study was to evaluate objectively the impact of ND on shoulder functions.
Methods: This is a pilot exploratory study in a tertiary cancer centre. Five participants with unilateral ND and advanced HNC, completed the study. Outcome measures consisted of self-reported QOL questionnaires, C2–T1 dermatomes and shoulder ROM and strength testing. Data was collected at baseline, 1.5-months after surgery and 6-months after diagnosis (after adjuvant treatment completion).
Results: Most outcome measures on the surgically affected side were negatively impacted post-operatively, with varied recovery seen at follow-up. Sensory loss was noted at C3–4 dermatome levels. Shoulder ROM and strength was reduced on the surficial side for all participants, with some recovery after six months except for two participants.
Conclusion: Results of SD after ND are diverse and unique to each patient. Findings from this pilot study indicate that regular rehabilitation/exercise may facilitate recovery of shoulder function post HNC surgery. However, customised rehabilitation may yield better outcomes. Future studies with a larger sample are indicated to validate the findings of this study
An Evolutionary Algorithm with Advanced Goal and Priority Specification for Multi-objective Optimization
This paper presents an evolutionary algorithm with a new goal-sequence
domination scheme for better decision support in multi-objective optimization.
The approach allows the inclusion of advanced hard/soft priority and constraint
information on each objective component, and is capable of incorporating
multiple specifications with overlapping or non-overlapping objective functions
via logical 'OR' and 'AND' connectives to drive the search towards multiple
regions of trade-off. In addition, we propose a dynamic sharing scheme that is
simple and adaptively estimated according to the on-line population
distribution without needing any a priori parameter setting. Each feature in
the proposed algorithm is examined to show its respective contribution, and the
performance of the algorithm is compared with other evolutionary optimization
methods. It is shown that the proposed algorithm has performed well in the
diversity of evolutionary search and uniform distribution of non-dominated
individuals along the final trade-offs, without significant computational
effort. The algorithm is also applied to the design optimization of a practical
servo control system for hard disk drives with a single voice-coil-motor
actuator. Results of the evolutionary designed servo control system show a
superior closed-loop performance compared to classical PID or RPT approaches
