    Optical properties of MgCNi3MgCNi_3 in the normal state

    We present the optical reflectance and conductivity spectra for non-oxide antiperovskite superconductor MgCNi3MgCNi_{3} at different temperatures. The reflectance drops gradually over a large energy scale up to 33,000 cm1^{-1}, with the presence of several wiggles. The reflectance has slight temperature dependence at low frequency but becomes temperature independent at high frequency. The optical conductivity shows a Drude response at low frequencies and four broad absorption features in the frequency range from 600 cm1cm^{-1} to 33,000 cm1cm^{-1}. We illustrate that those features can be well understood from the intra- and interband transitions between different components of Ni 3d bands which are hybridized with C 2p bands. There is a good agreement between our experimental data and the first-principle band structure calculations.Comment: 4 pages, to be published in Phys. Rev.

    Effects of Government R&D Grants on IT Entrepreneurial Firm Performance: A New Perspective on Exploration vs. Exploitation

    Governments keep subsidizing R&D of IT entrepreneurial firms greatly. However, the effect of these grants remains unclear. Acknowledging this gap, this study provides a nuanced perspective to understand the influence of government R&D grants on IT entrepreneurial firm performance. Based on the literature on organizational learning, we categorize government R&D grants into two types: explorative vs. exploitative. Moreover, drawing on resource complementarity theory, we articulate how the two types of government R&D grants interact with firms’ private R&D resources. In particular, we hypothesize that in the innovation stage, government explorative R&D grants complement a firm’s internal exploration in influencing innovation performance, but substitute a firm’s external exploration. We further posit that in the commercialization stage, government exploitative R&D grants complement a firm’s innovation performance and internal exploitation in impacting financial performance, but substitute a firm’s external exploitation. We advance a theory of public-private R&D interaction for IT entrepreneurial firms

    Anomalous microwave response of high-temperature superconducting thin-film microstrip resonator in weak dc magnetic fields

    We have studied an anomalous microwave (mw) response of superconducting YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-delta} (YBCO) microstrip resonators in the presence of a weak dc magnetic field, H_{dc}. The surface resistance (R_{s}) and reactance (X_{s}) show a correlated non-monotonic behaviour as a function of H_{dc}. R_{s} and X_{s} were found to initially decrease with elevated H_{dc} and then increase after H_{dc} reaches a crossover field, H_{c}, which is independent of the amplitude and frequency of the input mw signal within the measurements. The frequency dependence of R_{s} is almost linear at fixed H_{dc} with different magnitudes (H_{c}). The impedance plane analysis demonstrates that r_{H}, which is defined as the ratio of the change in R_{s}(H_{dc}) and that in X_{s}(H_{dc}), is about 0.6 at H_{dc}<H_{c} and 0.1 at H_{dc}>H_{c}.     Identification of α°-thalassaemia (–SEA) using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for embryonic zeta-globin chain detection – a preliminary study

    Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the UBI MAGIWELTM ζ-GLOBIN ELISA Kit for the presumptive diagnosis of αo-thalassaemia. The ELISA results obtained were confirmed by molecular characterisation of αo-thalassaemia using a Duplex-PCR. Methods: Routine peripheral blood counts and red cell indices were determined in 94 blood samples sent for Hb analysis. Hb subtypes were quantified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and Hb electrophoresis conducted on agarose gel at pH 8.5. Zeta-globin chain levels were determined using the UBI MAGIWELTM ζ-GLOBIN ELISA Kit. Molecular analysis was performed using a duplex-PCR which simultaneously amplifies a normal 136 bp sequence between the ψα−α2-globin genes and a 730 bp Southeast Asian deletion-specific sequence (–SEA) between the ψα2−θ1-globin genes. Results: Using the ELISA assay kit, 20 blood samples were presumptively identified as α-thalassaemia carriers from elevated ζ-globin chains (OD>0.3) while the remaining 74 blood samples showed OD<0.3. Molecular characterisation confirmed amplification of the 136 bp normal fragment in all the blood samples. Seventeen of the 20 DNA samples from the α-thalassaemia carriers amplified the SEA-deletion specific fragment. The remaining three DNA samples did not amplify the SEA-deletion specific fragment but amplified the normal α-globin gene sequence, indicating the presence of amplifiable DNA in these samples. Further molecular characterisation of the α-3.7 and -α4.2 deletions and Hb Constant Spring (CS) mutation showed the absence of these defects in these 3 DNA samples. Conclusion: This preliminary investigation showed the sensitivity and specificity of the UBI MAGIWEL ζ-globin ELISA kit as 100 % and 96.1 % respectively in the detection of α-thalassaemia-1 carriers (–SEA)

    The Safety Profile of Intentional or Iatrogenic Sacrifice of the Artery of Adamkiewciz and Its Vicinity’s Spinal Segmental Arteries: A Systematic Review

    Study Design: Systematic review. Objectives: There is paucity of consensus on whether (1) the artery of Adamkiewicz (AoA) and (2) the number of contiguous segmental spinal arteries (SSAs) that can be safely ligated without causing spinal cord ischemia. The objective of this review is to determine the risk of motor neurological deficits from iatrogenic sacrifice of the (1) AoA and (2) its vicinity’s SSAs. Methods: Systematic review of the spine and vascular surgery was carried out in accordance to PRISMA guidelines. Outcomes in terms of risk of postoperative motor neurological deficit with occlusion of the AoA, bilateral contiguous SSAs, or unilateral contiguous SSAs were analyzed. Results: Ten articles, all retrospective case series, were included. Three studies (total N = 50) demonstrated a postoperative neurological deficit risk of 4.0% when the AoA is occluded. When 1 to 6 pairs of SSAs (without knowledge of AoA location) were ligated, the postoperative neurological deficit risk was 0.6%, as compared with 5.4% when more than 6 bilateral pairs of SSAs were ligated (relative risk [RR] = 0.105, 95% CI 0.013-0.841, P =.0337). For unilateral ligation of SSAs of two to nine levels, the risk of postoperative neurological deficit does not exceed 1.3%. Conclusion: The current best evidence indicates that (1) occlusion of the AoA and (2) occlusion of up to 6 pairs of SSAs is associated with a low risk of postoperative neurological deficit. This limited number of low quality studies restrict the ability to draw definitive conclusions. Ligation of AoA and SSAs should only be undertaken when absolutely required to mitigate the small but devastating risk of paralysis

    In the design of fiber links for both continental and transoceanic optical communication systems, the optimization of span length is of high importance from both performance and cost perspectives. In this work, the maximization of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is investigated by optimizing the span length in wideband (up to 4.5-THz) Nyquist-spaced optical fiber communication systems. A simple and accurate closed-form expression of the optimal span length is provided, and a quick estimation of SNR is also described for practically feasible and cost-effective span length values

    Chromosomal DNA deletion confers phage resistance to Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

    Bacteria develop a broad range of phage resistance mechanisms, such as prevention of phage adsorption and CRISPR/Cas system, to survive phage predation. In this study, Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA1 strain was infected with lytic phage PaP1, and phage-resistant mutants were selected. A high percentage (~30%) of these mutants displayed red pigmentation phenotype (Red mutant). Through comparative genomic analysis, one Red mutant PA1r was found to have a 219.6 kb genomic fragment deletion, which contains two key genes hmgA and galU related to the observed phenotypes. Deletion of hmgA resulted in the accumulation of a red compound homogentisic acid; while A galU mutant is devoid of O-antigen, which is required for phage adsorption. Intriguingly, while the loss of galU conferred phage resistance, it significantly attenuated PA1r in a mouse infection experiment.     Reversible changes in protein phosphorylation during germinal vesicle breakdown and pronuclear formation in bovine oocytes in vitro

    This study examined the event of protein phosphorylation in bovine oocytes during germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD) and formation of pronuclei following fertilisation in vitro. Immature oocytes were obtained from abattoir materials and cultured in vitro. The oocytes were labelled with [32P]orthophosphate at 3 h intervals from 0 to 12 h following maturation in culture or from 3 to 18 h following insemination. One-dimensional gel electrophoresis indicated that levels of protein phosphorylation are low prior to GVBD. However, the levels of protein phosphorylation at approximately 40 kDa, 27 kDa, 23 kDa and 18 kDa increased substantially following GVBD and then decreased gradually as maturation in culture progressed. In contrast, the levels of protein phosphorylation increased gradually in the oocytes following pronucleus formation. Further, two-dimensional gel electrophoresis indicated that the protein at approximately 18 kDa reversibly changed in the oocytes during maturation and fertilisation. These results indicate that the reversible changes of this phosphoprotein may be related to either cell cycle transition or pronucleus formation during maturation and fertilisation in bovine oocytes.</p

    Metallothionein 1E mRNA is highly expressed in oestrogen receptor-negative human invasive ductal breast cancer

    Metallothioneins (MTs), a group of ubiquitous metalloproteins, comprise isoforms encoded by ten functional genes in humans. Different MT isoforms possibly play different functional roles during development or under various physiological conditions. The MT-1E isoform mRNA has been recently shown to be differentially expressed in oestrogen receptor (OR)-positive and OR-negative breast cancer cell lines. In this study, we evaluated MT-1E mRNA expression via semi-quantitative RT-PCR in 51 primary invasive ductal breast cancer tissues, concurrently with OR-positive and progesterone receptor (PR)-positive MCF7 cells, OR-negative and PR-negative MDA-MB-231 cells and PR-transfected MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells (ABC28). We demonstrated significantly higher MT-1E mRNA expression in OR-negative compared with OR-positive breast cancer tissues (P= 0.026). MCF7 cells lacked MT-1E mRNA expression, while both OR- and PR-negative MDA-MD-231 cells exhibited a high level of MT-1E mRNA expression. The level of MT-1E mRNA expression in progesterone-treated and -untreated ABC28 cells remained similar as the parental cell line MDA-MB-231-C2 cells. The results suggest that MT-1E may have specific and functional roles in OR-negative invasive ductal breast cancers, possibly mediated via effector genes downstream of the oestrogen receptor, but not through the PR pathway. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaig
