    Determination of beam incidence conditions based on the analysis of laser interference patterns

    Beam incidence conditions in the formation of two-, three- and four-beam laser interference patterns are presented and studied in this paper. In a laser interference lithography (LIL) process, it is of importance to determine and control beam incidence conditions based on the analysis of laser interference patterns for system calibration as any slight change of incident angles or intensities of beams will introduce significant variations of periods and contrasts of interference patterns. In this work, interference patterns were captured by a He-Ne laser interference system under different incidence conditions, the pattern period measurement was achieved by cross-correlation with, and the pattern contrast was calculated by image processing. Subsequently, the incident angles and intensities of beams were determined based on the analysis of spatial distributions of interfering beams. As a consequence, the relationship between the beam incidence conditions and interference patterns is revealed. The proposed method is useful for the calibration of LIL processes and for reverse engineering applications

    One-step method to grow Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 single crystals without fluxing agent

    Single crystals of Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 with excellent quality have been successfully grown without fluxing agent through a simple one-step method for the first time. X-ray diffraction patterns demonstrate that the samples have high crystalline quality and c-axis orientation. The onset transition temperature is up to 38 K with the zero resistivity temperature about 36.7 K. Both the R-T and M-T data show a very sharp superconducting transition with transition width 0.4 K. We also found that the samples possess very large current carrying ability and high upper critical fields, indicating potential applications requiring very high field. The above simple and safe one-step technique of single crystal growth can be effective in other systems of Fe-based superconductors.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figure

    Regulation of microglia related neuroinflammation contributes to the protective effect of Gelsevirine on ischemic stroke

    Stroke, especially ischemic stroke, is an important cause of neurological morbidity and mortality worldwide. Growing evidence suggests that the immune system plays an intricate function in the pathophysiology of stroke. Gelsevirine (Gs), an alkaloid from Gelsemium elegans, has been proven to decrease inflammation and neuralgia in osteoarthritis previously, but its role in stroke is unknown. In this study, the middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) mice model was used to evaluate the protective effect of Gs on stroke, and the administration of Gs significantly improved infarct volume, Bederson score, neurobiological function, apoptosis of neurons, and inflammation state in vivo. According to the data in vivo and the conditioned medium (CM) stimulated model in vitro, the beneficial effect of Gs came from the downregulation of the over-activity of microglia, such as the generation of inflammatory factors, dysfunction of mitochondria, production of ROS and so on. By RNA-seq analysis and Western-blot analysis, the JAK-STAT signal pathway plays a critical role in the anti-inflammatory effect of Gs. According to the results of molecular docking, inhibition assay, and thermal shift assay, the binding of Gs on JAK2 inhibited the activity of JAK2 which inhibited the over-activity of JAK2 and downregulated the phosphorylation of STAT3. Over-expression of a gain-of-function STAT3 mutation (K392R) abolished the beneficial effects of Gs. So, the downregulation of JAK2-STAT3 signaling pathway by Gs contributed to its anti-inflammatory effect on microglia in stroke. Our study revealed that Gs was benefit to stroke treatment by decreasing neuroinflammation in stroke as a potential drug candidate regulating the JAK2-STAT3 signal pathway

    Testosterone Is Associated with Erectile Dysfunction: A Cross-Sectional Study in Chinese Men

    Testosterone is essential for the regulation of erectile physiology, but the relationship between low testosterone and erectile dysfunction (ED) has not been firmly established.To examine the association between serum total, free and bio-available testosterone and ED in a population-based sample.A consecutive series of 1776 men aged 20–77 participated in the routine physical examination from September 2009 to December 2009 in Guangxi, China. ED was assessed using the five-item International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) questionnaire. Total testosterone (TT), sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and other biochemical profiles were measured. Free testosterone (FT) and bio-available testosterone (BT) were calculated based on Vermeulen’s formula. Data were collected with regard to smoking, alcoholic drinking, physical activity and metabolic syndrome.The prevalence of ED (IIEF-5<22) was 47.6%. Men with ED were significantly older, and more prone to smoke cigarettes (≥20 cigarettes/day) or drink alcohol (≥3 drinks/week), and more likely to have elevated blood pressure (P = 0.036) or hyperglycemia (P<0.001) compared with those without ED. The significant increase in SHBG with age was parallel to its increase with increasing severity of ED (P<0.001). The obscure increase in TT across the ED status was detected without significance (P = 0.418), but TT was positively associated with ED after adjustment for age [odds ratio (OR)  = 1.02, 95% CI (confidence internal): 1.00–1.04]. FT and BT were inversely associated with ED (OR = 0.14, 95%CI: 0.06–0.33; OR = 0.92 (95%CI: 0.89–0.96, respectively) in the univariate analysis, and this inverse association appeared to be independent of smoking status, alcoholic drinking, physical activity, hyper-triglyceridemia and hyperglycemia.FT and BT are inversely related to worsening ED, whereas the positive association between TT and ED is most likely due to the increase in SHBG

    Epidemiology of invasive group B streptococcal disease in infants from urban area of South China, 2011–2014

    YesBackground: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in infants in both developed and developing countries. To our knowledge, only a few studies have been reported the clinical features, treatment and outcomes of the GBS disease in China. The severity of neonatal GBS disease in China remains unclear. Population-based surveillance in China is therefore required. Methods: We retrospectively collected data of <3 months old infants with culture-positive GBS in sterile samples from three large urban tertiary hospitals in South China from Jan 2011 to Dec 2014. The GBS isolates and their antibiotic susceptibility were routinely identified in clinical laboratories in participating hospitals. Serotyping and multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) were also conducted for further analysis of the neonatal GBS disease. Results: Total 70 cases of culture-confirmed invasive GBS infection were identified from 127,206 live births born in studying hospitals, giving an overall incidence of 0.55 per 1000 live births (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.44–0.69). They consisted of 49 with early-onset disease (EOD, 0.39 per 1000 live births (95% CI 0.29–0.51)) and 21 with late-onset disease (LOD, 0.17 per 1000 live births (95% CI 0.11–0.25)). The incidence of EOD increased significantly over the studying period. Five infants (4 EOD and 1 LOD) died before discharge giving a mortality rate of 7.1% and five infants (7.1%, 2 EOD and 3 LOD) had neurological sequelae. Within 68 GBS isolates from GBS cases who born in the studying hospitals or elsewhere, serotype III accounted for 77.9%, followed by Ib (14.7%), V (4.4%), and Ia (2.9%). MLST analysis revealed the presence of 13 different sequence types among the 68 GBS isolates and ST-17 was the most frequent sequence type (63.2%). All isolates were susceptible to penicillin, ceftriaxone, vancomycin and linezolid, while 57.4% and 51.5% were resistant to erythromycin and clindamycin, respectively. Conclusions: This study gains the insight into the spectrum of GBS infection in south China which will facilitate the development of the guidance for reasonable antibiotics usage and will provide evidence for the implementation of potential GBS vaccines in the future.Supported by medical and health science and technology projects of Health and Family Planning Commission of Guangzhou Municipality (grant number 20151A010034) and Guangdong provincial science and technology planning projects (grant number 2014A020212520)

    Insight-HXMT observations of Swift J0243.6+6124 during its 2017-2018 outburst

    The recently discovered neutron star transient Swift J0243.6+6124 has been monitored by {\it the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope} ({\it Insight-\rm HXMT). Based on the obtained data, we investigate the broadband spectrum of the source throughout the outburst. We estimate the broadband flux of the source and search for possible cyclotron line in the broadband spectrum. No evidence of line-like features is, however, found up to 150 keV\rm 150~keV. In the absence of any cyclotron line in its energy spectrum, we estimate the magnetic field of the source based on the observed spin evolution of the neutron star by applying two accretion torque models. In both cases, we get consistent results with B∼1013 GB\rm \sim 10^{13}~G, D∼6 kpcD\rm \sim 6~kpc and peak luminosity of >1039 erg s−1\rm >10^{39}~erg~s^{-1} which makes the source the first Galactic ultraluminous X-ray source hosting a neutron star.Comment: publishe

    Overview to the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) Satellite

    As China's first X-ray astronomical satellite, the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT), which was dubbed as Insight-HXMT after the launch on June 15, 2017, is a wide-band (1-250 keV) slat-collimator-based X-ray astronomy satellite with the capability of all-sky monitoring in 0.2-3 MeV. It was designed to perform pointing, scanning and gamma-ray burst (GRB) observations and, based on the Direct Demodulation Method (DDM), the image of the scanned sky region can be reconstructed. Here we give an overview of the mission and its progresses, including payload, core sciences, ground calibration/facility, ground segment, data archive, software, in-orbit performance, calibration, background model, observations and some preliminary results.Comment: 29 pages, 40 figures, 6 tables, to appear in Sci.
