Feasibility Study of a Wearable Haptic knob System

In this study, we develop an event-based wearable haptic knob system that can be used in three-dimensional space. The first step involves building custom-built brakes and attaching them to a human forearm to achieve a wearable haptic knob. The display is built using a carbon-fiber frame. As our system is experiment-based, target torque curves are collected by a force sensor before using the torque representation. We confirm the effectiveness of our developed display through three operations, namely doorknob rotation, valve closing, and valve opening by the test subject. In the first step, the rotational axis was fixed on a table. These results are then used to develop the perfect wearable haptic system that includes a rotational axis in the display

Hertwig\u27s epithelial root sheath cells contribute to formation of periodontal ligament through epithelial-mesenchymal transition by TGF-β.

In tooth root development, periodontal ligament (PDL) and cementum are formed by the coordination with the fragmentation of Hertwig\u27s epithelial root sheath (HERS) and the differentiation of dental follicle mesenchymal cells. However, the function of the dental epithelial cells after HERS fragmentation in the PDL is not fully understood. Here, we found that TGF-β regulated HERS fragmentation via epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and the fragmented epithelial cells differentiated into PDL fibroblastic cells with expressing of PDL extracellular matrix (ECM). In the histochemical analysis, TGF-β was expressed in odontoblast layer adjacent of HERS during root development. Periostin expression was detected around fragmented epithelial cells on the root surface, but not in HERS. In the experiment using an established mouse HERS cell line (HERS01a), TGF-β1 treatment decreased E-cadherin and relatively increased N-cadherin expression. TGF-β1 treatment in HERS01a induced further expression of important ECM proteins for acellular cementum and PDL development such as fibronectin and periostin. Taken together, activation of TGF-βsignaling induces HERS fragmentation through EMT and the fragmented HERS cells contribute to formation of PDL and acellular cementum through periostin and fibronectin expression.福岡歯科大学2016年

CO2 laser therapy accelerates the healing of ulcers in the oral mucosa by inducing the expressions of heat shock protein-70 and tenascin C

The treatment of ulceration or stomatitis with laser therapy is known to accelerate healing and relieve pain, but the underlying biological mechanism is not fully understood. The present study used a mouse model of ulceration to investigate the molecular mechanisms by which CO2 laser therapy accelerated the wound healing process. An ulcer was experimentally created in the palatal mucosa of the mouse and irradiated with light from a CO2 laser. Compared with controls (no irradiation), laser irradiation induced the proliferation of epithelial cells and faster re-epithelialization of the wound area. Immunohistochemistry experiments showed that heat shock protein-70 (HSP70) was expressed mainly in the epithelium of normal palatal tissue, whereas there was little tenascin C (TnC) expression in the epithelium and mesenchyme under normal conditions. Laser irradiation induced HSP70 mRNA and protein expression in the lamina propria as well as TnC expression in the mesenchyme underlying the renewing epithelium. Epithelial cells and fibroblasts were exposed to heated culture medium or laser irradiation to establish whether hyperthermia mimicked the effect of laser irradiation. Culture of fibroblasts in heated medium increased the expressions of both TnC and TGF-β1, whereas laser irradiation induced only TnC expression. The present study indicates that CO2 laser irradiation exerts a photobiogenic effect to up-regulate TnC expression without inducing TGF-β1 expression. We suggest that CO2 laser therapy has an advantage over thermal stimulation

We conducted an interventional study to examine the psycho-physiological effects of group dance/movement therapy (DMT) on frail elderly women with disease or disabilities. Twenty-two subjects, ranging in age from 66 to 95 years and attending day-care centers in geriatric health services facilities, were allocated to groups performing DMT (n=11) or static activities (Control; n=11). While DMT was carried out, the control group participated in occupations like arts and crafts. All subjects participated in ten 60-minute (13:30 ~ 14:30) sessions of DMT or Control activities over a 10-week period. Normal day-care programs were conducted otherwise. During these experiments, we evaluated changes in psychological indices (emotion, intellectual function, performance of activities of daily living (ADL), and need for uniqueness). We also evaluated physiological indices by measuring saliva levels of the stress-related hormones Cortisol and Chromogranin A (CgA). Data were statistically analyzed and differences were considered significant at p< 0.05. Emotion improved significantly toward a comfortable state before and after DMT, but Cortisol and CgA values did not change significantly at the same time points. DMT subjects appeared to have less distress in mind and body than Control subjects. DMT might be useful for short-term improvements of emotion in frail elderly women. Intellectual function and the time required for ADL were maintained, while the need for uniqueness, defined as“ indifference to what others think,” tended to increase in both groups over the ten weeks. These were considered to be general effects of attending Day-Care for ten weeks
