Neutron powder diffraction experiment has been performed on the quasicrystal approximant Au72_{72}Al14_{14}Tb14_{14}, a body-center-cubic crystal of icosahedral spin clusters. The long-range antiferromagnetic order was confirmed at the transition temperature TN=10.4T_{\rm N} = 10.4 K. The magnetic structure consists of noncoplanar whirling spins on the icosahedral clusters, arranging antiferroic-manner. A simple icosahedral spin-cluster model with uniaxial anisotropy accounts well the whirling spin order as well as the in-field metamagnetic transition, indicating that the icosahedral symmetry is essential.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

Relationship between the severity of obstructive sleep apnea and impaired glucose metabolism in patients with obstructive sleep apnea

SummaryBackgroundThe relationship between the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and impaired glucose metabolism (IGM) has not yet been fully elucidated in patients with OSA. Accordingly, we sought to clarify this relationship in Japanese patients with OSA.MethodsThe study population consisted of 129 Japanese patients with OSA (apnea-hypopnea index [AHI] ≥5). A 75-g oral glucose tolerance test was performed in all patients who had not been diagnosed as diabetes mellitus (DM). IGM was defined as either diabetes mellitus (DM) or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT).ResultsIGM was observed in 78 (60.5%) patients: DM in 39 (30.2%) and IGT in 39 (30.2%). The frequency of IGM was significantly different among patients with AHI ≥30, those with 15 ≤ AHI <30, and those with AHI <15 (72.1%; 53.7%; 35.0%; respectively, p=0.001). Univariate logistic regression analyses showed male sex, the BMI, the AHI, and the lowest SpO2 to be significantly associated with IGM. A stepwise multivariate logistic regression analysis showed a male sex and the AHI to be independently associated with IGM.ConclusionIGM was observed in 60.5% of Japanese patients with OSA (AHI ≥5), and the prevalence of IGM increased according to the severity of OSA. Furthermore, the AHI was independently associated with IGM, thus suggesting that OSA may contribute to the development of IGM

Clathrin light chain b is capable of affecting potently a major protein phosphatase from microtubules (MT-PP1)

AbstractClathrin light chain (CL) b purified from bovine brain postmicrotubule supernatant and identified by mass spectrometry potently inhibited a catalytic activity of a major protein phosphatase (PP) that was copurified with microtubules and recognized by antiPP1 antibodies. CLb similarly affected the catalytic subunit and holoenzyme of the PP, little inhibiting the activity of PP2A. Although the CLb from clathrin-coated vesicles was several hundredfold weaker than our purified CLb, the CLb in the postmicrotubule supernatant, independent of whether it was sedimentable or soluble, was as active as the purified CLb. Thus CLb may be a potent regulator of the PP

DISCOVERY OF FERROPICRITES AND HIGH-MAGNESIAN ANDESITES FROM THE ERDENETSOGT FORMATION, CENTRAL MONGOLIA

New geochemical and petrological results are presented for greenstones from the Erdenetsogt Formation hosted by the Tsetserleg accretionary terrane in the Hangay region, with particular emphasis on newly found picritic and andesitic rocks. These rocks occur mostly in the lower portion of the Erdenetsogt Formation as massive lavas, sills, and dykes closely associated with varicolored bedded ribbon cherts and siltstones. The protoliths of the studied greenstones comprise (1) plume-derived tholeiitic greenstones with oceanic plateau basalt affinity, (2) arc-derived, calc-alkaline andesites. The plume-derived rocks are characterized by chemical signatures such as slight LREE enrichment similar to that of tholeiitic OIB and the existence of ferropicrite with high FeO* (>14 wt%) and MgO (12–22 wt%), which is characteristic of large igneous provinces (LIPs), including oceanic plateaus. Therefore, their tholeiitic composition and high-Fe and -Ti contents require melting of the source mantle peridotite with addition of some recycled Fe- and Ti-rich basaltic material. The andesites are characterized by glassy texture, high MgO content (up to 7 wt%), and significant LREE enrichment with depletion in Nb and resemble sanukite type of high-magnesian andesite (HMAs). We infer that the Hangay tholeiitic greenstones probably represent an accreted upper section of an oceanic plateau that developed in the deep-water region of the Hangay-Henteypaleo-ocean in the Upper Silurian-Lower Devonian. The Hangay HMAs may have been produced by subduction of young oceanic plate after an oceanward back-stepping of the subduction zone that was a result of the collision during the Carboniferous of the oceanic plateau and the active continental margin of the Central Mongolian Massif
